미래를 향한 도전, 성공창업의 길을 안내하다

스타트업 열풍이 이어지고 있다. 특히 스마트 디바이스를 비롯한 ICT 산업의 발전으로 아이디어 발산의 창구가 확장됨에 따라 창업 열풍은 더욱 거세지고 있다. 하지만 아이디어와 의지만으로 치열한 창업 시장에서 홀로 살아남기란 어려운 것이 사실이다. 이에 광주과학기술원 창업진흥센터에서는 차별화된 창업보육전략을 통해 새로운 첨단벤처기업을 육성하고 잠재적인 예비창업자를 발굴하고자 활발한 지원 사업을 펼쳐나가고 있다.

중소기업청 운영평가 최우수, 대학창업지수 최우수 그룹
광주과학기술원 창업진흥센터는 지난 2000년 중소기업청으로부터 창업보육센터로 지정된 이래 중소기업청, 광주광역시, 미래창조과학부 등의 다양한 창업지원 사업을 운영해왔다. 특히 중소기업청 BI 운영평가에서 최우수 등급(S)을 12회 획득할 만큼 사업 운영의 질과 성과를 높이 평가받고 있다. 센터는 2015년 기준 152억의 매출액과 190명의 고용을 창출했으며, 지역 창업 초기기업 88개사를 지원하기도 했다. 이러한 성과를 인정받아 최근 매일경제에서 발표한 ‘2016년 대학창업지수’에서 251개 대학 중 상위 5%의 최우수 그룹에 선정된 바 있다. 

이처럼 센터가 높은 성과를 거둘 수 있었던 데에는 타 보육센터와 차별화되는 보육 전략을 구사하고 있다는 점이 크게 작용했다. 먼저 센터는 내/외부 기술・시장전문가 100여명을 멘토단으로 구성하여 입주기업에 대한 신사업 발굴과 지원 전략 기획, 기술 및 경영컨설팅 등을 진행하고 있다. 또한 시제품 제작과 시뮬레이션 등을 위한 G팩토리를 운영하고, 연구장비 활용 지원과 기술 이전, 창업네트워크 등의 인프라도 풍부하게 갖추고 있다. 센터 역량 강화와 입주기업 지원을 위한 정부지원사업에 끊임없이 도전하는 것도 큰 강점이다. 센터는 2016년 현재 창업관련 미래창조과학부 사업 2개, 중소기업청 사업 3개, 광주광역시 사업 1개를 운영중이며, 최근3년간 창업지원사업을 12회 수행하는 등 창업지원에서의 노하우도 풍부하게 갖추고 있다.

창조경제 선도할 강한 기술창업기업 육성에 힘쓸 터
기성근 센터장은 “GIST의 우수한 연구성과물과 광주R&D특구 내 우수 기술창업자를 발굴하여 집중지원하고 있습니다”라고 설명했다. 현재 창업진흥센터에 입주해있는 기업 중 90%이상이 기술창업 기업이며 이 중 GIST의 기술을 활용하여 사업화까지 연계한 연구소 기업 6개, 교수기업 4개사, 학생기업 5개사가 입주하고 있다. 창업진흥센터는 GIST의 기술을 사업화로 연계시키기 위하여 단계별 프로그램을 운영하고 있다. 연구실의 기술을 바탕으로 사업계획서 작성, 1:1멘토링, IR등을 통해 사업화로 연계시키는 “Tech to Market”, 시제품 제작 및 다양한 창업활동을 지원하고 성실실패를 용인하는 모의창업 프로그램인 “GIST Sprint for Start-up”(이하 GSS), 실제 법인설립과 제품제작, 마케팅을 지원하는 “Campus CEO Challenge”(이하 CCC)이 대표적인 기술창업지원 프로그램이다. 이 프로그램을 통해 설립된 학생창업기업인 (주)뉴로핏 (대표이사 빈준길) 은 GSS프로그램을 수행하고 과기특성화대학 공동창업경진대회에서 2위를 수상한 후 CCC프로그램을 통해 법인설립을 진행하였으며 TIPS 운영사인 퓨처플레이의 투자를 받고 현재 활발히 기업활동중이다. 

기 센터장은 “저희는 기업 설립에서 코스닥 상장까지를 책임지겠다는 자세로 포괄적이며 실질적인 인큐베이팅을 수행하고 있습니다. 또한 교수들의 연구 성과에 기반 한 산학협력과 창업, 재학생들의 창조적 도전을 서포트 할 수 있는 프로그램 등 GIST가 보유한 역량과 우수 연구성과물이 최대한 활용될 수 있도록 지원을 아끼지 않겠습니다”라고 강조했다. 다가오는 21세기, 국가 경쟁력을 판가름하는 것은 결국 미래 유망산업 분야에 축적된 기술력과 역량일 것이다. 보다 나은 미래를 향한 창의적이고 진취적인 도전을 돕기 위해 최선을 다하겠다는 광주과학기술원 창업진흥센터 기성근 센터장. 이들의 노력이 세계를 향해 도약할 대한민국의 저력이 되어주길 기대한다.

Challenges for the Future, Startups for Success

Ideas and passion, however, cannot by themselves lead to success because success also requires professional support. <Power Korea> met Director Sung-geun Ki of GIST Business Incubator of the Gwangju Institute of Science and Technology

Excellence in BI Assessment of SMBA and in University Startup Index
Since the establishment of the GIST Business Incubator in 2000 by the Small and Medium Business Administration (SMBA), GIST Business Incubator of the Gwangju Institute of Science and Technology has run various startup support projects for the government. The institute has already received excellent marks 12 times in the SMBA’s BI Assessment for quality and substantial management capability. It earned KRW 15.2 billion in sales for 2015, created 190 new jobs, and supported 88 companies. The institute was also ranked in the top 5% among 251 universities evaluated by the 2016 University Startup Index. GIST runs a mentor group consisting of 100 specialists to give professional support in finding new business lines, strategic planning, and technology and management consulting for in-house companies. GIST has rich infrastructure in research tools, technology transfer and startup network, and runs G Factory for test products and simulation. GIST is currently carrying out 2 startup projects for the Ministry of Science, ICT and Future Planning, 3 projects for the SMBA, 1 project for the Gwangju Metropolitan City, and has carried out other 12 startup support projects over the last 3 years. 

Promoting Leading Technology Startups for Creative Economy
GIST focuses on finding and supporting excellent research results and leading technology startups housed in the Gwangju R&D Special Zone. More than 90% in-house enterprises of GIST are technology-based, including 6 research–driven companies, which successfully commercialized GIST technologies, 4 professor-driven companies, and 5 student-driven companies. To enhance technology commercialization capability, GIST runs various support programs: business plan, 1:1 mentoring, Tech to Market, GIST Sprint for Start-up (test startup program), and Campus CEO Challenge (establishing a company, product manufacturing, and marketing). As a result, the student startup Neurophet, which benefited from GIST Sprint for Start-up, won the runner-up prize at the Joint Startup Competition held by Joint Education Center for Technology Startup. Neurophet then became a corporation with the help of Campus CEO Challenge and has invited investment from Future Play of TIPS. 

“We are encouraged and driven by our duty to provide comprehensive support services from startup to being listed on KOSDAQ. We are also using our industry-academic cooperation system and capabilities as well as research results to maximize our level of support.” 

It is not too much to say that the future of national competitiveness comes from accumulated technologies and capabilities. And GIST Business Incubator of the Gwangju Institute of Science and Technology is playing a critical role.
