독창성과 차별성으로 ‘인더스트리얼 디자인’의 새로운 패러다임 제시

트렌드에 가장 민감한 반응을 보이는 분야 중 하나는 바로 ‘인테리어’다. 특히 최근에는 세월의 흔적을 담아낸 콘크리트 벽면, 철제, 폐목재 등 거친 소재가 그대로 드러나는 인더스트리얼 디자인이 크게 각광받고 있다. 이러한 가운데 DK인더스트리얼은 독창적이고 독보적인 디자인과 소재연구를 통해 부산과 경남, 경북을 대표하는 인더스트리얼 디자인 전문기업으로 그 기술력을 인정받고 있다.

차별화된 디자인 감각, 시장을 선도하다
인더스트리얼 디자인은 영어의 인더스트리(industry)에서 온 개념으로서 우리말로는 ‘산업의’, ‘공업의’ 정도의 의미로 해석된다. 몇 년 전까지 크게 인기를 끌었던 ‘모던(modern)’보다는 시기적으로 조금 뒤인 1920년대 이후 급격하게 산업이 부흥하고 기계화되기 시작한 시기를 모티브로 한 이 디자인 기법은 세련되고 깔끔한 느낌보다는 좀 더 투박하고 남성스러우며 빈티지한 느낌이 강한 것이 특징이다. 2008년 실내환경관리 전문업체인 닥스리빙클럽을 창업한 백승한 대표는 사업을 이끌던 와중 자연스레 특수건축자재와 이를 활용한 빈티지 인더스트리얼 디자인에 관심을 갖게 되었으며, 1년간의 시행착오와 2년간의 제품 연구 및 개발 과정을 거쳐 ‘빈티지만의 빈티지만을 위한’ 인테리어 디자인 전문기업인 DK인더스트리얼을 설립하게 되었다. 백 대표는 “당시만 해도 인더스트리얼만을 위한 전문 제품라인업이 미비한 상황이었고, 재료나 소재 또한 한정적이었기 때문에 국내·외에 출시된 수많은 제품들을 직접 테스트하고 선별하는 등 상당한 어려움을 이겨내야만 했습니다. 하지만 이러한 과정을 거치며 트렌드를 따라가는 것이 아닌, 저희들만의 차별화된 감각과 독창적인 디자인을 구현해낼 수 있었던 것 같습니다”라고 설명했다. 또한 DK인더스트리얼은 전문 에이전트 양성교육을 통해 업계 최초로 P&P(Professional Processor) 시스템을 구축, 시장 개선과 자사 제품의 대중성 확보에도 성공했다. 현재 이들은 서울, 경기 지역에 정기적인 교육센터를 개설했으며, 부산경남 지역에서는 소규모 교육을 진행하고 있다. 또한 본사가 위치한 부산·경남 지역을 시작으로 대전, 서울, 경기 지역까지 취급점 및 지점이 점차 확대되고 있다.

이야기를 담은 공간, 감성을 담은 디자인
백승한 대표는 “인테리어 디자인에 있어 가장 중요한 포인트는 공간의 사용 목적에 맞춰 사용자가 구상한 이미지를 형상화하는 것”이라 강조했다. 시공한 이후 생각과 달라 재시공하게 되는 시간과 비용 낭비를 줄이기 위해서라도 이는 무척 중요한 과정이며, 이것만으로도 이미 디자인의 50%가 완성된 것과 다름없다는 것이 그의 의견이다. 심미성과 실용성을 동시에 만족시킬 수 있는 인테리어 포인트를 묻는 질문에 백 대표는 “첫째, 덕트를 과감히 제거해 천장고를 높이고, 둘째, 간단히 분위기를 연출할 수 있는 벽면용 스타코를 적극 활용하며, 셋째, 오래된 소품, 가구, 조명등을 적극 활용하는 방법이 있습니다. 인더스트리얼 디자인은 오래되고 낡은 것일수록 빛이 나는 특성을 가지고 있어, 관심과 노력 여하에 따라 충분히 ‘나만의 핫 플레이스’를 가지는 것이 가능합니다”라고 설명했다. 현재 DK인더스트리얼에서는 자체 브랜드인 빈티지에디션 제품의 시장 출시를 앞두고 있다. 백승한 대표는 제품 출시에 앞서 상권 보호와 전문 기술인력 양성, 직영점 모집에 더욱 힘을 모을 예정이다. 그는 “자체 브랜드 제품을 통해 국내 시장에서의 차별화는 물론, 해외 역수출로까지 이어질 수 있도록 품질 향상과 자체 생산 시설 강화에 더욱 주력할 계획입니다. 또한 저마다 다른 개성을 표현할 수 있는 다양한 제품라인업을 구성해 시장을 선도하는 기업이 될 수 있도록 노력하겠습니다”라고 각오를 밝혔다. 또한 이에 덧붙여 아이디어와 기술력을 갖춘 신생기업의 성장과 국내 건설자재 및 도료 시장의 활성화를 위해서는 정부의 보다 실효성 있는 지원 정책이 뒷받침되어야 한다고 당부했다. 인더스트리얼 디자인을 일컬어 흔히 ‘감성을 담은 디자인’이라고 부른다. 오래되고 낡은 느낌, 다듬어지지 않은 거친 느낌 안에 나름의 이야기들이 담겨있기 때문이다. DK인더스트리얼이 써내려가는 독특한 이야기들이 국내 인더스트리얼 디자인계에 새로운 패러다임을 제시하게 되길 기대한다.

And the recent trend tells us the use of rough materials such as concrete walls, iron and wood waste: industrial design. <Power Korea> met CEO Seunghan Baek of DK Industrial who is a renowned industrial designer in Busan and North Gyeongsang Province in terms of his originality and differentiation.

Differentiation leads the trend
We might have to travel back to the 1920s to talk about industrial where industries were blooming. The biggest charming of the materials used in the ear undoubtedly is about roughness and sturdiness. Baek formerly established Daks Living Club, an interior environmental management firm, in 2008 before he grew his interest in industrial materials. He had to go through many trials and errors for a year and spend another 2 more years on R&D to finally launch the current DK Industrial. “Back then, it was hard to find the materials I want in Korea so I had to turn my eye to overseas materials and products. But this research actually brought me new and differentiated ideas” looked back Baek. Baek introduced P&P (Professional Processor) system through specialist fostering programs to improve market environment and to spread excellence of the products of DK Industrial, and currently is running education center in Seoul and Gyeonggi Province with small sized training in Busan and South Gyeongsang Province. He also is working on increasing the number of branch in Daejeon. 

The space that has a story, the design that makes us move 
“The most important point in interior design is to realize the idea according to the purpose of the space. This is very important as it prevents wasting time and money caused by change of the idea. In other words, bringing up the right concept at the very beginning stage has already completed 50% of the whole process” explains Baek. When asked about ideal interior design that satisfies both esthetic value and practicality, Baek said “First of all, we need to remove the duct to raise the ceiling, apply staco for the wall secondly, and use antique props, furniture and lights lastly. The older and rougher the materials the better the interior effect in industrial design.” Recently, DK Industrial is preparing to release its own vintage edition product to the market. “The product will give differentiation compared to other products and we also plan to export it to overseas. But for now, we are focusing on quality and production system as well as other product ideas.”
