[Art] Artist Baek Mi-gyeong of Baekhyang Flower Pressing Gallery
Delivering nature to objects

There are artists who make an art work or an ornament by pressing and drying flowers, leaves and stems. The works usually get 3 dimensional by adding chemical treatments that are needed and this can enable the maker to use various other materials alongside natural ingredients. This flower pressing is called ‘Kot-nuremi’ in Korean and artist Baek Mi-gyeong is one who raised the technique to a level high in the form of an art.

Encountering the art of flower pressing
Flower pressing is still rather an unfamiliar word for many Koreans. But its application is wide enough to meet in our daily objects such as cards, letter papers, accessories or frames at home, office or stores. “I actually didn’t know about flower pressing like many people. I dropped by a department store one day and saw a frame made by flower pressing and thought it was awesome. Then the curator in the corner explained that it was made with real flowers and I could also learn the skill in the cultural center run by the department store. That was the beginning of my passion in flower pressing” looked back Baek.

Walking a single path for 20 years as a flower presser
We need to dry flowers or grasses before pressing to make a work. Flowers or seaweeds, for example, usually take up to 4 days to dry and fruits up to a month. And we should dry in a natural way as the materials get changed its color and quality when done by artificial ways. “I have kept only this natural way of drying in order to shift the real feeling of nature into my works. I dried lotus flower, for example, to make the work ‘Memory of Dopian Temple’” explains Baek. She also expressed autumn colors in her other work ‘Facing Autumn’ and invited reeds, mountains and flowers into the folding screen work called ‘Towards Wind’. These two are Baek’s representative works in which we might feel the sublime beauty of nature and the artist’s imagination. An art critic Lee Sun-young once marked “Baek’s flower pressing is faithful to our desire to preserve beautiful things forever. Many of her works show a splendid world beyond and her technique is highly advanced. The vacuum treated ‘Chochungdo’ which made with lilies and tomatoes and the work made with vineyard and ground cherries give a feeling of oriental paintings perfected with meticulous penmanship.” Baek has so far held 17 solo exhibitions starting at Gyeonggi Arts Center in 2002 and participated in more than 100 group and invitation exhibitions home and abroad including CPS Gallery New York. “A madam seemed to be in her 80s had a look around the solo exhibition I had last year. She said that she was a gallery goer and mine were the most beautiful works she’d ever seen. I was impressed and I engaged myself in a talk with her for a while.”

Spreading flower pressing to more people
Baek is a founding member and the former vice head of the Flower & Human Contact in Press Flower and currently is serving as the president of the Baekhyang Flower Pressing Association. Last year, she gave flower pressing classes for 5 weeks during the first semester at five elementary schools with the support of the Federation of Artistic & Cultural Organization of Korea and Jung District Office. Children loved her classes and she was asked a second round the next semester from the teachers. Baek is also enthusiastic to engage herself in a talk with the viewers who visited her exhibitions in the hope of spreading flower pressing to more people.

Opening a gallery
Baek regrets the fact that many galleries require unaffordable fees to hard up artists who might have brilliant talent and works. To improve the situation, she opened a gallery October last year with the goal to promote regional artists and culture. Baek recently displayed her works in the group exhibition held at Insa Art Center last month and currently is preparing for Manila FAME to be held on 20-23 this month in the Philippines. “I’m ambitious to spread the charm of flower pressing as it is still an unfamiliar word for many people in the country.”  Today’s high buildings and residency somewhat disconnected communication between neighbors even people with the next door. The higher the buildings the deeper our loneliness, says Baek. “I wish my works can give a piece of comfort and mental healing to those loners. Feeling nature every now and then might be a great way to recharge the energy to move on our life.”
