Chilean Embassy celebrates the 206th Independence Day Anniversary
This year marks the 206th anniversary of Chile’s independence from Spain in 1810. Although Chileans had to fight for 8 more years to achieve their total freedom, they celebrated the 18th of September, 1810 with the ‘Fiestas Patrias’ (literally ‘patriotic parties’) during which all Chileans gather together to praise the country, culture and independence through parades, music, dances and traditional food. This year, Chilean Embassy to S. Korea held a meaningful preliminary event at Angel’s Haven for Children, a social welfare foundation located in Eunpyeong District, Seoul. <Power Korea> took part in the event and delivers the news as well as the official reception held at Grand Hyatt Seoul on Tuesday, September 20th.

Chilean Ambassador H.E. Fernando Danus shares his warm heart with Angel’s Haven
Angels’ Haven was founded in 1959 by missionary John Joseph Thesis JR, reverend Yoon Sung-ryul and missionary Ruth Noble Appenzeller to help the children orphaned by the Korean War. As children began to flourish through sponsorship in Korea, Angels’ Haven realized the growing need to work with communities and the foundation now runs various departments for children and youth, disabled, local community, and international cooperation. Looking for something meaningful to celebrate the 206th Independence Day, the Chilean Embassy to S. Korea organized an event on 31 August for 35 children at Angel’s Haven. Six officials of the Embassy including Ambassador H.E. Fernando Danus and Consular Daniela Bizama, Seoul City official Kim Chang-bum, chefs Im Mi-rae and Kim Nam-jong, magician Lee Sun-bum, and good hearted staff of the foundation all worked together to give an unforgettable day for the children. Consular Daniela in particular introduced Chile’s location, history, culture and food to the children and it was followed by making the national flag of Chile, magic show, eating snacks and traditional Chilean food, giving out gifts and commemorative photograph. H.E. Fernando Danus said in his opening speech “I’m really delightful to be here with you today. This year marks the 206th anniversary of Chile’s independence from Spain in 1810. I thought for many years how to celebrate our independence day more meaningful and found these good hearted people standing, and still preparing food and things, around you today. We believe that it is our job, as Chilean Embassy to S. Korea, to be one step closer to local communities in a way of strengthening friendship and of sharing different culture and warm heart. That’s why we organized this meaningful event today and I hope you all enjoy the day.”

H.E. Fernando Danus invites honorary guests
to official ceremony at Grand Hyatt Seoul

Following the meaningful preliminary event at Angel’s Haven, Chilean Ambassador H.E. Fernando Danus invited honorary guests to the official Independence Day ceremony held at Grand Hyatt Seoul, Waterfall Garden, on 20th September. Numerous renowned figures including Russian Ambassador H.E. Alexander Timonin, the American Ambassador H.E. Mark W. Lippert, and Vice Minister for Science, Information and Communications Technology and Future Planning, Mr. Choi Jae-you, as well as military officials and CEOs of renowned companies were invited. Consular Daniela Bizama, with the Third Secretary of Embassy of Chile & the Ministry of National Defense Band, gave a special performance to liven up the mood and Vice Minister Choi Jae-you gave a congratulatory address, and President of Hanwha Trade Corporation Park Jae-hong proposed a toast. H.E. Fernando Danus said in his speech “I appreciate your attendance to Chile´s National Day and the opportunity to share with you some of Chile´s culinary products and, of course, the quality of our wines. Korea and Chile enjoy strong and cordial ties of friendship and we have similar positions on many of the issues of current international concern, such as disarmament and nuclear nonproliferation, climate change, protection of the environment and conservation of living marine resources. At present Korea is Chile’s fourth trade partner. From 2004 to 2015 bilateral trade increased by an average of 7% annually, reaching over US$ 6.000 million last year. The development of political and commercial ties has contributed to enhance initiatives that promote cultural exchange.  Our Working Holidays Programme with Korea entered into force at the beginning of this year.  It gives Korean and Chilean nationals the chance to enter each other´s countries on holidays and also engage in paid employment as an incidental aspect. We feel that these experiences will strengthen mutual knowledge and understanding between our people. The Embassy of Chile initiated this year’s festivities for our National Day with an afternoon of games, laughter and joy for 35 children of Angel’s Haven, a facility that provides caring for minors in a vulnerable condition in Seoul. In all these occasions I express my satisfaction for living in this country and for having the agreeable task of furthering the already friendly relations between our Governments and peoples.” Recently in September 2013, Doosan Heavy Industries & Construction signed a contract with BHPB, a global mining company, for building desalination plants at USD 103 million in Chile that would supply water to 550,000 people a day.
