[Sancheong County Special] Park Heng-gyu, President of Cheongsan Agricultural Association Corporation
From a doctor of painted maple (acer pictum subsp) to a forest businessman
Sap of painted maple as rising star in forestry industry

Park was chosen as the first new intellectual in the category of forestry industry in 2006. He became an honorary researcher of the Korea Forest Service and is an authority of painted maple. He received Order of Bronze Tower Industry for his contribution to development of Korean forestry industry. He devoted his passion in the sap of painted maple for the last 10 years and improved public health. “The sap of painted maple is made through the tree filtering hundreds of millions of cells and we can drink the sap straight away. Thanks to its nutritional value, it is regarded as a high value added business for many forestry businesses” explained Park. The biggest advantage of the sap of painted maple is that it is categorized as water and therefore easy to circulate the product in the market without going through strict regulations like beverages. He was supplied 15,000 painted maple trees from the National Forestry Cooperative Federation at the begging stage of the business. “But the trees didn’t grow. A systematic botany doctor Gwon Young-hwan explained to me that the trees were not the kind to grow. So I decided to change the species of trees.” He traveled to Russia, Canada and Japan to find right painted maple trees and he finally succeeded growing the trees of various kinds. Acer okamotoanum Nakai (AoN) among them is the main tree that Park grows in his farm. AoN is rich in sugar content than normal painted maple trees and the sap contains saponin which makes it smell like ginseng. Park also developed a method to extract the sap within 5 years which normally took 10 years. The method directly contributed to making fast profits. Park’s innovation also comes from the fact that he planted wild ginseng and deodeok (codonopsis lanceolata) between the painted maple trees because these two are shade plants. As a result, the number of the wild ginseng has grown to hundreds of thousands over a 10 year period. Also as a sideline, Park is growing wood-cultivated ginseng and is serving as President of the Wood-Cultivated Ginseng Growers’ Association. “I found a lot of fake woo-cultivated ginseng circulating in the market. Thankfully, the new regulation forces all the products to go through screening for the place of origin and the place of cultivation which must be stated on the product. “This doesn’t mean that there will be no bad practices but at least we can now apply legal limitations to the suppliers.”

Government level support is needed
Park was chosen as the first new intellectual in the category of forestry industry in 2006. “I’ve devoted myself to producing the sap of painted maple trees for the last 20 years. I achieved many but also felt the need of government support for facilities and farmers especially coming from cities to lead a new life in the country. I see many people coming to listen to my lecture on growing painted maple trees as well as an increasing number of people touring my farm.” Park added that the future of Korean agriculture depends on the government’s vision. It is a must for Korea’s decreasing number of farmers to use cutting edge equipment and facilities to supply substantial and healthy food for the people.

From poor to rich
Skipping a meal was normal for Park when he was young. He barely finished elementary school and did everything he could to earn bread and butter. “I worked at a barbershop when I was 17. I was just happy that I had a shelter and food. I studied and worked hard day and night and passed the national qualification exam for middle school. I actually hated for being poor and blamed anything on my parents. But looking back, I couldn’t have been who I am today without those harsh period of time in my life. It made me grow strong and independent.” Park wrote his own success story and he is proud of his achievement. To share his knowledge and knowhow with people, he is actively delivering his lecture on growing painted maple trees both home and abroad. “In Germany, the government provides support for those who practice SFM (Sustainable Forest Management) and I hope Korea would follow suit in order to raise national competitiveness in the field.”
