Artist Lee Bun-suk
Sharing happiness and warm heart through art
Lee delivers the healing function of art to people

We make a move on and pursue something new in our life. Despite this marching of life, something is always left behind in a corner of our heart like we wish to return back to the womb. It might be the reason that artists take nature onto their canvas to let out this yearning of journey back home. We can share this sentiment in realistic depiction of Lee’s works. – Art critic Kim Sung-eun –

Shifting the wonders of nature onto canvas
“My childhood in Andong is my source of inspiration”

Abstractionism is prevalent in contemporary art. It dismantles the existing forms while post-modernism plays its role to back up the trend. We might find a reason or two from the fact that the many of traditional beliefs have become obscure in today’s society. No matter what the reason was, it is clear that the artists out of this trend are rather left behind from the attention. Are they stubborn enough to accept the trend or are they just being themselves? The truth is that abstract artists are not the only ones that shine the art world but those who love their own way also. In this respect, the realistic works of artist Lee Bun-suk, can be praised for creating different values from abstract trend. Lee was born and fed in Andong, the city surrounded by breathtaking landscape. It is only natural, for this reason, that her works celebrate the wonders of nature. “Walking through the sun drenched banks of the Nakdong River and the poplar trees are forever indented in my heart as a haven. I don’t pursue something big in art but I express my gratitude to nature through art.”

A warm air blowing on the vast field, a forest that cures our emotional wound
Talking about compositions of Lee’s works, it is nothing but landscape itself. We can feel what it means from her representative works ‘Always Where You Are 1’, ‘Cornus Fruit’, ‘Village with Peach Blossom’ and ‘Snowscape’. We might feel a sense of comfort and healing while appreciating Lee’s works as nature itself delivers us a message to let go of all our earthly desire even for a while. One of her main subjects ‘birch tree’, for example, encourages us to find our inner self like the trees unmoved for any changes of environment. “I use colors that go well with my sentiment of the time of appreciating nature, forests in particular, so that I can be able to deliver the healing functions of nature to the viewers. Some people looked down on my works as stubborn and out of fashion but what is important in art, I think, is not the style but one’s truthfulness. After all, I’m not a trend seeker.”

Talent donation alongside Korea Youth Arts Association
Lee values little part of nature more than its magnificence because life happens through every little moment. “So painting for me is not a magnificent act of my life but a small act that ease my troubled mind. Other people judging your painting whether you finished it like a photograph or have a trendy edge is insignificant matter but delivering your true heart and sharing it with others is all we need to feel.” Meanwhile, Lee has been donating her artistic talent to children and youth, especially disabled, alongside the Korea Youth Arts Association in which she is serving as the director of Bucheon branch. She also gives lectures on art techniques for art therapists. “These activities, as well as taking a PhD course and being a housewife, played a great part to keep myself busy enough to hold solo exhibitions which I haven’t had one since 2007. I actually became skeptical about it but having seen piles of works in my studio encouraged me to consider a one sooner or later.”

An artist who delivers the healing function of art to people
Lee defines herself as an artist who delivers the healing function of art to people. “In the same reason, I wish to run a ‘small healing art gallery’ where people find a little comfort through art and I’m currently working on various art techniques to make each exhibition more diversified. I have many ideas traveling around my head and I know that the only way to bind them into a one complete work is to try.” If you feel like enjoying a good autumn day, why not visit a gallery and look forward to Lee’s coming solo exhibition?
