[Special Interview] Petar Andonov, Ambassador of Bulgaria

For most of us Koreans, Bulgaria instantly reminds us of yogurt. But in fact, this actually applies to the people of the whole world. Yogurt in Bulgaria is regarded as national treasure and for this reason the special bacteria used in its production is state-owned. Bulgarian’s longevity is closely related to yogurt and they start to eat at the age of 3. The uniqueness of the yogurt comes from Lactobacillus bulgaricus and Streptococcus thermophiles which makes Bulgarian yogurt different from any other country. But yogurt is not the only one that makes the country famous but also Bulgaria has 9 UNESCO World Heritage Sites, the world's largest IMAX 3D cinema and is one of the world’s biggest winemakers (200,000 tons a year). Many Bulgarian descent inventors also contributed to inventing the first electronic computer, digital watch and car air bag. <Power Korea> met Petar Andonov, Ambassador of Bulgaria, and heard about the country and relationship with Korea. 

When did you start your office in Seoul and what is your impression of Korea? 
I arrived in Seoul in November 2012. It is my second post as ambassador after Japan. Like most countries, Korea has beautiful landscapes which I found by travelling around Busan, Daegu, Jeju (3 times already), Namhae, Boryeong, Gwangju, Jeonju, Yongnam and many more. And I also found Korean people nice, kind, open and friendly. It is interesting that many Korean foods are similar to Bulgarian’s in terms of its hot taste. Korean fermented foods especially Kimchi are also similar to ours in the manner of fermentation and I love them very much. 

Could you shortly tell us about your previous posts?
I actually worked as a journalist before I started my diplomatic career. After my ambassadorship in Japan I worked as a moderator and producer of current affairs program and business news at TV Europe network.

What do you think are the images that pop into people’s minds when they hear the word Bulgaria? (Food, writers, artists, music, etc.)
It’s undoubtedly the Bulgarian yogurt. We regard bacteria as national treasure and for this reason it is managed by the state to prevent private owners’ monopolization for their own profits. We established comprehensive production, preservation and management systems and exert much of our effort in maintaining its uniqueness and brand value. Rose, wine and healthy foods are also famous and the two football players Hristo Stoichkov (FC Barcelona) and Dimitar Berbatov (Tottenham Hotspur, Manchester United) are well known figures globally. But for many Koreans, Michael chef, who gained fame by appearing on JTBC’s culinary show “Refrigerator” might be more memorable. He runs ‘ZELEN’, the Bulgarian restaurant in Itaewon. 

What are the key areas of diplomatic and economic cooperation between S. Korea and Bulgaria?
In May 2015, the Bulgarian President Rosen Plevneliev visited Korea on the invitation of President Park. They issued a joint statement for building a comprehensive and future-oriented partnership. At the time of the visit, MoUs in the field of defense, science & technology, culture & education and sports were signed as well as a MoU between Sofia Tech Park, the first innovation ecosystem in Southeastern Europe, and Samsung Electronics. We are also working together to expand cooperation scope to IT, infrastructure, manufacturing export, transportation, logistics and tourism by inviting more Korean research and development centers and investments to Bulgaria.

Could you introduce some of the Korean and Bulgarian companies currently active in each country?
Major Korean companies such as Samsung, Hyundai, etc. are running businesses in Bulgaria but there is no Bulgarian company in Korea at the moment. However, several Korean companies import Bulgarian foods especially wine, organic food, wheat, rose-oil and tobacco.

Cultural and people-to-people exchanges are very important to build a close bilateral relationship. Could you introduce some of your cultural events and programs?
The Embassy participates in various cultural festivals and events taken place in Korea alongside our own promotional events including Bulgarian wine tasting party, concerts and exhibitions. By the initiative of the Bulgarian Embassy in Seoul with cooperation of Korea Foundation we present Bulgarian pop & rock music to Korean audience.

What do you think we can see, eat and enjoy when we visit Bulgaria?
There are nine UNESCO World Heritage Sites in Bulgaria. So it might be a good idea to start with one of these sites. If you are one of those who love nature, eco-tourism will be an ideal course of your trip as you can not only enjoy beautiful landscape but also local village life while staying at one of guest houses in the countryside. Bulgaria also is famous for golf course and ski resorts especially around the coastline of the Black Sea. As for the food, I recommend ‘Banitsa’, a traditional Bulgarian pastry made of mixture of whisked eggs and pieces of cheese and ‘Shopska’, the most popular Bulgarian cold salad made of tomatoes, cucumbers, onions, roasted peppers, feta cheese and parsley. A bottle of Bulgarian wine will be a good accompaniment to the foods. 

Lastly, what is your future plan and is there anything you would you like to say to <Power Korea> readers?
As for the economic part, I will focus on inviting more Korean companies to invest in and to do business in Bulgaria, arranging more high-level meetings for a further promotion of a political dialogue and promoting Bulgarian culture in Korea through various events and exchange programs especially for young people. Personally, I would like to travel to as many parts of Korea as I can to know more of the nature of your beautiful country, the people and the culture.
