Imaginations start at Luielle Hat Culture Center
CEO Jo Hyun-jong of Chapeaux Luielle Hat Culture Center
Everything about hats

Located around Jeonju Korean Village, Luielle Hat Culture Center is opened in 2010 by Chapeaux, Korea’s top fashion hat maker. On the first floor of this four storey building, you can meet the works of Shirley Chun, the first Asian graduating from C.M.T (Cours Modeliste Toiliste) who has become a globally famous hat designer today. When the tour is finished, you might take a coffee break at the café Laboum on the same floor. Moving onto the second floor, you can see traditional hats from both home and abroad and you can compare them with hats today. But the experience hall on the third floor might be the most popular place for many visitors as they can try to make a hat or two by themselves. The fourth floor, on the other hand, provides a concert hall and a quality guest house with a sky park so that visitors can recover from the fatigue of journey. “We expect that the center will arouse public interest in hats while they are appreciating a variety of different styles of hats and trying to make one or two by themselves. Also, we hope that the center will take part in spreading the value of traditional Korean hats to foreign visitors” explains Jo.

The ambition to grow Chapeaux as a global hat maker
Under the slogan ‘Imaginations start at Chapeaux’, the hat maker launched its flagship brand ‘Luielle’ in 1999 and built its status as the leader of luxury fashion hats in Korea. Chapeaux has brought up new ideas on materials, design, production and distribution and contributed to the advancement of the hat market in Korea. Luielle means ‘he and she’ and Shirley Chun is in the center of this Korea’s sole luxury fashion hat brand. With its basic concept ‘wearable feminism’, Shirley Chun is showing unique styles and this was well received by sweeping numerous awards including ‘High Seoul Brands’, ‘Fashion Brand Awards’, ‘Korea Cultural Goods Competition’ and ‘Korea Prestige Brand Awards’. Meanwhile, Chapeaux’s ‘Korean Paper Hat (Gat)’ was listed in ‘A Thousand Year Jeonju Guinness’ and the Chapeaux, as a result, was appointed as a promising company in North Jeolla Province. You see Chapeaux hats in famous department stores in Korea and in Japan including Tokyo International Hotel. Quite recently, Chapeaux hats have been appeared in numerous Korean films and aroused public curiosity in hats. “We don’t see our hats as hats but ‘cultural content’ where culture and art are converged. Like Jeonju City successfully promoted its cultural assets, Chapeaux will also promote excellence of Luielle to the world over Korea” assures Jo.
