The mother of Korean flower tea ceremony
"I will make Korean flower tea culture as a global trend"
Song Hee-ja, President of Flower Tea Culture Promotion Association

Flower Tea Culture Promotion Association spreads Korean flower tea culture
Korean flower tea is brewed in moderate temperature water and has delicate scent. A sip of the tea will give you a relaxation, two sips a meditation and three sips a paradise. All edible flowers such as chamomile, lavender, magnolia, evening primrose and cockscomb can be made into tea. If Chinese flower tea has been famous for its poetic ceremony and abundance, Korean flower tea has developed much through professional research on growing the flowers. A group of tea lovers gathered together to make a tea club called Mururang-Darerang in 1999 and it developed into the Flower Tea Culture Promotion Association in February 2012. The association is praised for its contribution to widely spreading flower tea culture to the people. President Song Hee-ja of the association has devoted her life to flower teas for the last 20 years and is regarded as the mother of Korean flower tea culture. The association has developed 200 kinds of flower teas and Song can make 160 of them according to its kind and manner of growing. The association also has given numerous prizes and training opportunities to excellent tea makers chosen through the International Flower Tea Tasting and has held various competitions and seminars in order to promote industry specialists. Song studied flower tea making at Seoul Women's University Flora Academy and Woosong College and is currently running a lifelong study program at various universities.

Making 250 kinds of flower teas
Song has worked for The Farmers Newspaper as a freelance writer and has written three books: 'Korean Flower Tea in Lucid Mind', 'Fragrant Korean Flower Tea' and 'Flower Tea Story for Twelve Months'. Song has developed 250 kinds of flower teas including 160 pure flower teas and 50 among them obtained item manufacturing license. She proved her expertise in flower tea making by winning a prize at Daegu Flower Show 2016. "The color, fragrance, taste and function are four important elements of flower tea. And each flower has its own flower language and story so I use it when enjoying the tea to maximize the pleasure. It is important to make flower teas according to the industry standard. Some flower teas have medicinal effect. Locust tree flower, for example, makes blood clean and reduces heat in the body. I also made some rare teas such as fermented locust tree flower tea and fermented magnolia tea around 2003. I could make a lot of profits with the teas but I rather used them to treat VIP instead" says Song.

Fostering flower tea specialists
Song's 100 day exhibition <Wild Flower Blooming in Our Life> - "A Memory of Flowers for 600 Years, Blooming in Tea Cups" held at Sarangchae (guest room) in the Blue House in 2015 was praised by many appreciators and global leaders. Song particularly cherishes magnolia tea (love at first sight) and white flower tea (takes 2 years to grow). In order to foster flower tea specialists, Song introduced private certificate courses based on three levels: The Third Level requires candidates to know flower names, flowering times, collecting and manufacturing methods, the Second Level manufacturing technique according to each season and the First Level creating one's own flower teas. The candidates who passed the First Level will go through high level tasks designed according to the international standard and Song is planning to introduce this testing system by early next year. Also, Song and the tea competition winners are planning to visit various tea fairs in Japan this year. Meanwhile, the association set a goal to invite more than 6 countries to the events held by the association and to announce 'international flower tea making standard' soon. As part of the effort, the association recently signed a MOU with a national university of the Philippines and sent buyers to Germany and France. "We hope that all of our effort will bear good fruit and contribute to spreading excellence of Korean flower teas to the world" says Song.
