Artist Shim Youn
‘The painter who paints angels’
Blowing soul, vitality and whisper of angels onto canvas

Sim Youn brushes for life and soul
Artist Shim Youn is also known as ‘angel painter’ due to a considerable amount of works on angels. Shim valued lines and colors related to religion in her early works but turned her course to representational painting from abstract. And her works contain her inner whirlpool of emotions accumulated through years of contemplation and self-training.

Painting for Shim is a dialogue with god. She sees her painting as a return journey to the Garden of Eden and spirituality. She confesses that human beings after Adam have instincts to return to where they came from and she undoubtedly is one of them. Many of her works contain both traditional and modern costumes and today’s gadgets like mobile phones and skateboards to give freedom on form and diversity on expression. Art for Shim, in this respect, is a means to express one’s thought and to reflect the age.

Her works show us the past, present and future in a single frame. She tries to catch the time of Kairos who finally meets the soul in time of Chronos onto canvas. Thus she can feel the presence of god and contemplate on where we are going after this world.

Delivering messages over genres in delicacy and meticulousness
Shim grew up with paintings. Her older sister and brother also enjoyed painting. She is a sister of artist Shim Yeong who mainly worked in the US. Shim majored in western painting at Ewha Womans University and expressed her young desire and will through lava-eruptive colors and lines after graduation in 1987.

She displayed two of her abstracts ‘Towards Idea’ and ‘Combined Souls’ in her second solo exhibition held at Chicago Post Culture Center in 2000. “I could be able to see god by seeing the existence of soul and was able to express the god with my own language by feeling the force of god. I try to find living things by visualizing the invisibles” says Shim.

“My works are the symbolic realization of my philosophy, ideology and future. The perfection we pursue rarely becomes real but the effort is the one I want to deliver onto the canvas” continues Shim.

Her works have now become companions of Shim in her mid-50s. The works became more tranquil, balanced and borderless as her age did. Only the delicateness of her hands remains to add maturity.

Healing our minds in faith
Shim once suffered much from depression. And painting had become the only cure no matter how she could engage herself in it like running an art academy. Painting therefore is an act of calming her emotional stir and of seeking a beautiful soul.

The feathers in her works for this reason indicate angels’. The falling feathers scattered around are the symbols of healing the pain. By imagining the feather flying, we might feel as if we can hear the sound of wind, the echo of angels in melodies.

“Angels came to me to be friends while I had no one to talk to. Looking back, that might be because I wanted to be alone. Nevertheless, angels flew to me like messengers of heaven” says Shim.

“I feel like I’m living a new life with angels on my paintings. Angels deliver vitality and inspiration. I wish I could communicate with more people and deliver this joyful message to them through my works” adds Shim.

5th solo exhibition in Insa-dong
Shim is holding her 5th solo exhibition with the title ‘Angels Exhibition’ in Insa-dong this November. One wall of the hall will be filled with 40 works of her ‘little angel series’.

The exhibition is meaningful as it is a result of her last 3 years of contemplation and effort. Although she has participated in numerous home and abroad exhibitions, this exhibition in November will be the assembly of the works of her last 30 years. Shim wants to deliver her message to the public that ‘there is beautiful world after death’. She calls it rather interestingly like ‘well-dying over well-being’.

“Us being alive itself is a bliss. And me being able to paint is a gift of god” says Shim. If you feel like a gallery despite this scorching hot weather, you are highly advised to walk through Inso-dong to appreciate the works of Shim.
