지금 우리 사회는 그 어느 때보다도 수많은 고뇌와 번민에 둘러싸여 있다. 갈수록 심화되고 있는 빈부 격차, 진보와 보수 등 이념과 입장에 따른 사회 양극화, 악화되고 있는 계층 간의 유리, 중산층의 붕괴, 생명을 위협하는 죽음의 문화 등 끊이지 않는 사회 문제들은 우리들의 마음을 어지럽히고 힘겹게 한다. 약사암 주지 보성스님은 “지금 사회에 가장 필요한 것은 부처님의 가르침인 자비의 실천입니다”라고 말한다.

말씀보다 큰 가르침을 행하다
요즘 한국 사회는 그야말로 홍역을 앓고 있다. 가진 자와 못 가진 자 간의 다툼이 수시로 벌어지며, 흉악한 범죄로 인해 계층 간의 유리감이 혐오로까지 발전하고 있다. 사람들은 더 이상 삶의 기쁨과 타인에 대한 사랑, 고마움과 감사함에 대해 생각하지 않는 듯하다. 하지만 이런 가운데서도 ‘낮은 곳을 살피며 자비를 행하라’는 부처님의 가르침을 설파하며 사람들에게 깨달음과 안식을 전하고 있는 곳이 있다. 바로 창원시 진해구 충무동에 위치한 ‘약사암’이다.

약사암의 주지 보성스님은 ‘중생을 두루 살피고 보듬는 것’이 자신의 소임이라 여기며 산중(山中)이 아닌 진해중앙시장의 한 편에 사찰을 세웠다. 그리고 지역주민들 가까운 곳에서 봉사와 자비를 행하며 부처님의 가르침을 한결같이 실천해 온 것이 올해로 25년째이다. 오랜 시간을 함께해 온 만큼 지역주민들과 보성스님은 서로를 가족처럼 여긴다. 고민이 있을 때면 언제든 찾아가 터놓을 수 있으며, 힘겹고 어려울 때 위안과 안식이 되어주는 곳이 바로 약사암이다.

보성스님은 “처음 약사암을 창건할 때부터 제가 바랐던 것은 ‘낮은 곳을 살피고, 어려운 이들을 도울 수 있는 곳’을 마련하는 일이었습니다. 주변의 소외된 이웃들이 끼니를 거르지 않도록 따뜻한 한 끼 식사를 제공해주고, 형편이 어려운 학생들이 가난 탓에 학업을 포기하는 일이 없도록 도와주는 것이 작으나마 제가 해야 할 역할이라 생각했습니다”라고 말했다.

약사암을 찾아오는 불자들은 하나같이 “말씀보다 더 큰 가르침을 받을 수 있는 곳”이라 말한다. 항상 지역사회를 위해 봉사와 헌신을 멈추지 않는 보성스님이 몸소 부처님의 자비행(慈悲行)을 실천하며 한 마디 말보다 더 진한 울림을 전하고 있기 때문이다.

매년 천안함 희생자 위한 제사로 넋 달래
약사암에서는 매년 3월 26일, 47명의 천안함 희생자들을 위한 제사를 올리고 있다. 피격사건 당시 아들이 천안함 소속 평택2함대에 근무하고 있었기에 침통함이 더욱 컸다는 보성스님은 당시 합동 49재를 올린 이래 지금까지 매년 제사를 지내며 그들의 넋을 위로하고 있는 것이다. 이는 당시에도 49재를 위해 십시일반 정성을 모아줬던 신도들의 간곡한 바람이기도 했다. 보성스님은 “천안함 사건이 발생한지도 벌써 6년이라는 세월이 흘렀습니다. 이미 많은 사람들이 이를 잊고 지내는 듯하지만, 억울하게 희생된 우리 젊은이들의 넋이 아직도 편히 잠들지 못하고 있음을 기억해주었으면 하는 바람입니다”라고 전했다. 천안함 사건에 대한 보성스님의 깊은 관심에서 보듯 스님은 평소 뉴스나 신문을 빼놓지 않고 본다고 한다. 보다 많은 중생들을 구제하기 위해서는 산 속에서 홀로 수행하는 것보다는 세상에 대한 끊임없는 공부가 필요하다는 것이 스님의 생각이다.

현재 보성스님은 (사)한국불교 미륵종의 종회의장을 맡고 있다. 보성스님은 “비록 조계종이나 천태종보다는 교세가 약하지만, 종단협의회의 승인을 받은 정통 있는 종파로서 세상 곳곳에서 부처님의 가르침을 전하고 있습니다”라며, “보다 많은 사람들이 서로 돕고 화합하여 자비를 베푸는 것이 곧 보시(普施)라는 깨우침을 얻기를 바랍니다”라고 말했다. 자비를 행하는 것이 곧 스스로와 타인을 동시에 구원하는 것이라 말하는 보성스님. 스님이 건네는 따스한 손길이 많은 이들에게 희망의 온기로 전해지길 바란다.

“Action speaks louder than words”
There is an increasing level of concerns over Korean society’s gap between rich and poor, self-indulgence andhorrendouscrimes.People seem to care no more about others but put money above anything else. However, where there is darkness there is light also. Located in Chungmu-dong, Jinhae District, Changwon, Yaksa Temple has spread the teachings of Buddha for a long time in the city. Bosung, the chief monk of the temple, founded the temple in the center of Jihan Central Market,not at the foot of a mountain, in order to spread the benevolence of Buddha to more people from where they live in which he has done for the last 25 years. The temple, as a result, has become rather a resting place where people come and share their stories or get an advice or two from Bosung. “I and the residents have built a friendly relationship rather than the solemn priest-believers relationship. I built the temple to serve the poor in spirit and to give them a resting place. I started with providing free meals to underprivileged and scholarship to students in financial difficulty” said Bosung. Residents also voiced together “Bosung is a man who proves his value in action. His good will and diligence in helping others have touched the hearts of many people.”

Appeasing the souls who died inthe Cheonan Navy Ship (PCC-772)gunfight
Bosung's son was serving his military duty on the ship at the Second Fleet Command in Pyeongtaek on the day and died as a result of the gunfight. Bosung performed a memorial ritualfor 49 days for the 47 soldiers who died on the day and he is still carrying on the ritual once a year on 26 March.“How time flies. It’s already been 6 years since the gunfight killed many soldiers. People seem to already have forgotten the tragedy but I hope they remember those poor souls sometimes. I read newspapers and watch the news on TV every day. This is not because I don’t have any other thing to do but I want to find those, whether live or dead, whose soul need a little bit of comfort” said Bosung. Also serving as the president of the Korean Buddhist Mireuk Order Bosung said “Our order is relatively smaller than Hwaum Order and Chuntae Order but we are an authentic order approved by the Association of Korean Buddhist Orders and is second to none in spreading Buddha’s teachings to the world. I hope more and more people will discard all selfishness and live together in harmony by sharing what we have.”
