[Special Interview] Fernando Danús, Ambassador of Chile 
Located between the Andes and the Pacific, Chile is a long, narrow country stretching along South America's western edge with 2,600 miles of Pacific Ocean coastline. Thanks to its various climatic conditions and geographical location, the North has the driest desert in the world, the middle condensed with winery valleys and ski resorts and the south thick forests, Patagonia, everlasting ice caps and lakes. Chile’s 5,000 islands are also breathtakingly charming with Easter Island famous for archeological sites, myth and legend and Robinson Crusoe Island thought to have inspired Daniel Defoe’s novel as two most representative islands. For Korea, Chile is better known as the first country to sign FTA and of course wines. Korea’s top bilingual magazine <Power Korea> met Fernando Danús, Ambassador of Chile, and heard about bilateral relationship between the two countries. 

When did you start your office in Seoul and what is your impression of Korea?
I arrived to Seoul on the 1st. of February of this year.  Coming from the Southern Hemisphere summer, my first impression was of intense cold.  However, I adapted quickly, as diplomats usually do.  Nowadays I am meeting various local authorities, attending gatherings and doing a lot of reading, so that I get acquainted with the events in this country and the issues related to the bilateral relationship.  On weekends I take long walks around Seoul and I bicycle along the river Han and its adjacent channels, in order to get to know the city.  I think that people are nice and efficient.  The local food is great.  The Republic of Korea is an exciting place to live and work.

Could you shortly tell us about your previous posts?
I started my diplomatic carrier in 1976.  As a Foreign Service officer I was posted to the United Kingdom, the United Nations, New Zealand, Singapore, Malaysia and Indonesia. Later I was Ambassador to Singapore and Concurrent Ambassador to Myanmar.  In Chile I was Director of Environment, Antarctic and Maritime Affairs, as well as National Director of Borders and Boundaries.

What do you think are the images that pop into people’s minds when they hear the word Chile? (Food, writers, artists, music, etc.)
I think that the main image of Chile among the Korean general public relates to our wines.  They are well known for their quality and have built a solid share of the local market.  Being a soccer fan myself, I also see some awareness of the participation of our national team in the last international competitions.  Fondness for that great sport is shared by Koreans and Chileans.

What are the key areas of diplomatic and economic cooperation between S. Korea and Chile?
The Republic of Korea and Chile are like minded countries.  We cooperate and support our policies in various international fora.  We have common interests in areas such as preservation of the environment and conservation of living marine resources.  Our work in Antarctica constitutes an important ground for mutually beneficial endeavors, considering the scope of our respective Antarctic Programs and the proximity of the Chilean city of Punta Arenas to that continent.  During the visit of President Park Geun-hye to Chile in April 2015, a MOU on Cooperation in the Field of Information and Communication Technologies was signed, which provides for intensifying contacts.  This month the Korean Vice Minister for Science, ICT and Future Planning is visiting Santiago, in order to strengthen those ties.  We are also working to update our Free Trade Agreement -which dates from 2003 and was the first instrument of that kind subscribed by the Republic of Korea-, in order to further develop and strengthen our economic and commercial ties.  In this regard, an important Chilean mission will visit Korea soon.

Could you introduce some of the Korean and Chilean companies currently active in each country?
Chilean food exports to the Republic of Korea have increased 85% in the last decade.  Our trade also includes significant volumes of copper.  Nowadays Korea is our third destination in Asia.  More than 600 Chilean companies are involved in this effort.  It would not be appropriate to single out only some of them, because they are all relevant.  Let me just say that we are pleased by the acceptance of Chilean products in the Korean market.  Our fruits, pork meat, seafood and wines, to name just a few items, are doing particularly well.

Cultural and people-to-people exchanges are very important to build a close bilateral relationship. Could you tell us some of your cultural events and programs?
We understand that importance.  In that regard, the Working Holidays Programme between Chile and Korea is a very relevant mechanism. It was agreed in 2015 during the visit of President Park Geun-hye to Chile and entered into force at the beginning of this year.  It will provide the chance for Korean nationals to enter Chile and Chilean nationals to enter Korea, to enjoy their holidays and also to engage in employment as an incidental aspect of their trip, in order to supplement their travel funds. 

This embassy is interested in promoting academic exchanges and building bridges between Chilean and Korean educational institutions.  About 60% of the Chilean community in Korea consists of graduate and postgraduate students, who have the opportunity to specialize and also learn the Korean language.  We are confident this exchange experience will also allow young people to appreciate the other country’s culture and way of living, thus enhancing mutual understanding.

What do you think we can see, eat and enjoy when we visit Chile?
Santiago is conveniently located at the foot of the Andes Mountains, where you have access to modern sky resorts.  From there you can also go to the coastal cities of Valparaiso and Viña del Mar in less than two hours, where nice beaches and fresh seafood can be enjoyed.  The deserts located in the north of the country contain impressive natural panoramas.  The south is well known for its scenic beauty and also offers good opportunities for trekking and adventure tourism.  And everywhere you can enjoy the hospitality of the Chilean people, the excellence of our wines and the variety of our traditional cuisine.  The best season to visit is from October to April, when the weather is warm and there is very little or no rain.

Lastly, what is your future plan and is there anything you would you like to say for <Power Korea> readers?
I am looking forward to a long and fruitful stay in the Republic of Korea.  I intend to work for the development of mutual understanding and cooperation between our countries.  We are located far away, but we share a friendship based in common interests and values.  I respect this country and the Korean people, for their hard work attitude, their regard for elders, the importance they attribute to education and their ability to overcome hard times.
