The public sculptures in symbolism
“I pursue the origins of everything through my works”
CEO sculptorWang Kwang-hyun of Art In Space

Public sculptures meet with aesthetic beauty
Art In Space recently attracted a great attention with two public sculptures: ‘Foot of Peace’in Imjingak Peace Park and‘We Will Never Forget’in Taebaek Safe Town. The former is for the DMZ military action hero who lost one of his legs and the latter for the five firefighters who died on duty. CEO sculptor WangKwang-hyun of Art In Space placed the bare foot in the center of surrounded pillars. The bare foot symbolizes hope and comradeship that we can walk the DMZ on barefoot one day in future and the pillars symbolize the ceasefire line. Wang interviewed the soldiers and studied about the materials including the torn-out military boot and the 155mm shell fragments which he melted them into the foot. ‘We Will Never Forget’, on the other hand, is a memorial stone to honor the five firefighters who lost their lives in a helicopter in trying to save civilians as well as 345 firefighters who died on duty. The two big S line relief objects and sculptures on the four surfaces deliverthe very spot where the accident took place and the messages of honor and respect. Both sculptures are praised for effectively delivering bigger meanings in a shorter time to the appreciators. This might be because Wang values the meaning of a work more than the profit he can generate and for the same reason he regularly donates his talent back to society.

Studying on origin and creation
Unlike private and commercial sculptures, public sculptures are often called as ‘two souls in one work’: personal and public meanings. As for the personal works, Wang has been studying on relationship between nature and man and where we came from and where we belong to. One of his major works‘The space that shifted’, for example, Wang expresses organic relationship between nature, man and civilizations through the stone surface with mirror stainless steel on it. The recent work ‘The origin of life’, for another example, represents Wang’s macroscopic reason by showing non-existent objects through images of big bang and circles expanding. Some artist question whether concept and philosophy must be put into an art work but Wang says the subject of a work is the most important element of an art work yet it does not necessarily be enlightening: any subject that might arise fun and interest will be ok. Meanwhile, as a member of Art In Space, Wang prepares a meal for his colleague artists every now and then or travel with them in spare time. If you are interested, Wang is opening an exhibition at KOSA Space in August next month. <Power Korea> wishes him a great success.
