Simple yet cheerful paintings
‘Story of vineyard’ as main theme
Succeeding tradition of Korean painting

In a broad sense, ‘story of vineyard’ is Kang’s main theme. A daughter makes a shade with an umbrella over her napping father in ‘Vineyard Keeper’s Nap’, a man is in a lookout hut under the moon shining in ‘The Man in the Lookout Hut’, grapes are ripen and flowers are blossomed in a village in ‘Village with Grapes and Flowers’and a light bulb blazes, harmonica sings through the mosquito net under the milky way in the sky in ‘Night in Lookout Hut’. Kang’s love of grapes is so great that she lays all other objects around the fruit in many of her worksand thisstory of vineyard series actually made her famous.Kang’s works are simple yet cheerful and delicate. She uses Korean paper on the canvas for her bold brush work of ink and paints the objects with implications. They might look like western paintings in a sense but they all contain the sentiments of Korean paintings. Kang grew up surrounded by the landscapesaforementioned and she gave accents to her works with the colors and atmosphere somewhat reminded us of Koreanness.

The vineyard she grew up with
Kang’s latest works include‘Unrequited Love’, ‘Mischievous Stealing of Grapes’ and ‘Grapes and a Girl’. Although she has works without grapes such as ‘Afternoon’, ‘The Way to Sunam Temple’ and ‘Water Bird’, grapes always have been her main subject. This is because back then in the 1960s children in the village often had to fill up their stomach with grapes due to a scarcity of food. And Kang’s father’s vineyard was a desirable target for them to mischievously stealing the grapes which her father knew but let them do it. Kang remembers “Ma father was an ardent Christian and taught children the Bible until he was 70. In the midnight when he spots a thief in the vineyard he just turned his back and looked up to the sky to count the stars until the thief gets done his job. He just wanted to put the love of Jesus into practice I guess.”The memory of her father’s warm heart and her own sentiment inside may be the main source for arousing sympathy from many appreciators. And for the same reason, her works are often used for the cover of many poetical works including Yu Tae-seung and other famous books.

Growing love of art in Christianity
Kang showed a great interest in art from her early age. But her family had limited pockets to support her and she had to bury the passion in her heart. She married a young minister at the age of 24 and he started his first mission on Shin Island in Ongjin County, Incheon. They moved to Hwaseong City (they built a church in 1993) and Jeju Island and the mission lasted in this way for 38 years. To earn a living during the period, Kang worked as an auxiliary teacher while rearing her children at the same time. She painted time to time in her spare time and this became her source to stand up again and carry on her life whenever a storm hits her life. When her youngest son left home for university she felt it was time for her to fulfill her dream in earnest. To compensate all those lost times, she paid triple amount of effort starting with landscape painting and moved onto semi-abstraction. One day when she looked back she found over 100 works around her.

Becoming a sought-after artist
Kang has held 9 solo exhibitions and more than 100 group and invitational exhibitions home and abroad including one in Italy, Spain and Sri Lanka. The solo exhibition in Italy in particular is memorable as she sold ‘Unrequited Love’ and ‘Woman Who Picks Grapes’ and she gave out traditional Korean fans as gift in return. She also won numerous prizes including ‘Grand Art Exhibition of Korea’ and ‘Jeonil International Contest’ and worked as a Korean painting lecturer at Yangcheon University. Currently, Kang is studying Oriental Painting at Hongik University Special Graduate School and a member of the Korean Fine Arts Association. When asked about her future plan, Kang answered “I want to create works that can deliver love and glory of God.”It is a bliss that if one can do what he/she wants to do other than doing things in order to just get by. But bearing one’s dream in the heart itself can also be the source for the one to push it forward. In this respect, it might be a good idea if we introduce one of Kang’s poemsto give an encouragement for the busy modern people who carry their dream in their heart.
