Contemplation on essence and meaning of life
Artist Baek Nak-hyo
Baek’s unique brush work shifts Korean images onto canvas
Baek was born as the last son of six in Miryang in 1947. He showed a natural aptitude for painting since he was a child. He won the grand prize at Miryang Cultural Festival when he was a third year high school student and held his first exhibition with 30 of his works at Moon Coffee Shop in Gwangbok-dong when he was a third year university student. Baek remembered “art for me around that time was a battle for survival.” Despite lack of time for his art works due to being busy playing a teacher, he tried hard to find his own language of art and pioneered his art world. Baek is known as an artist who restlessly contemplates on essence and meaning of life with which he shifted his finding into creating ‘Korean images’ in the form of relief. Anthemion, butterflies, bats, carps, flower, vases, goblins and clouds can be found on his works. He makes the images protruded 1~2mm to give 3 dimensional effect. Baek paints carps more often than other things as it symbolizes Bodhisattva, wealth and fame. Butterflies and bats, on the other hand, were widely used for ornaments during the Joseon Dynasty period and they symbolize conjugal harmony, love, wealth and abundance in baby boys. Kim combined his contemplation and philosophy with these traditional Korean images to express Sukhavti (the land of happiness).
A streak of pure spirit that awakens the corrupt world
Baek became a member of ‘Gunrok Society’, a gathering of artists in Busan, in 1974 and has held and participated in many exhibitions including 7 solos. His works have been praised by many art critics for a unique style and Baek also won numerous prizes and awards including ‘2016 Korea Culture Art Awards’ and ‘2016 Korea Power Leader Awards’. He also received citations and achievement awards from various educational institutions including the Ministry of Education for his contribution to education. Baek currently is working on dragons and flowers for his 8th solo exhibition and planning to participate in US Art Fair and Bejing Art Fair. He says “Art for me is not a goal of my life but a means to achieve enlightenment. In other words, art is a hard way to find oneself and to purify the world.” People say that an art work contains the artist’s soul and therefore is a portrait of the artist. <Power Korea> hopes that Baek’s art works can be a streak of pure spirit that awakens the corrupt world.
