Introducing Korea’s first portrait gallery
Realistic brush works reproducing great men in history
Oh Dong-hee, Portrait Artists/ Director of Oh Dong Hee Portrait Gallery
Appreciating portraits of great men in one place
Realistic portrait artist Oh Dong-hee opened Oh Dong Hee Portrait Gallery in a 4 storey building at 721 Banpo-dong, Seocho District Seoul last April. According to Oh, the current portrait painting market is divided into caricature and realism and she has devoted her life in the latter field for 40 years. She is famous for depicting the portraits of great men in history on canvas. She bought the building to open the gallery so that she can display the works she has created so far at one place. You can meet Pope Francis and Cardinal Stephen Kim Su-hwan (diceased) on the third floor and smell paints leaking from the fourth floor where lecture rooms are also located. The gallery is 99m2 big and is gracefully designed and decorated. Oh’s intention is to provide a space for the public in which they can appreciate art works and communicate with each other. Oh explains “I always felt the need for a space where I can teach students and viewers can communicate with art works at the same time.” Oh thoroughly studies the man she plans to paint including historical fact in order to create deep and detailed characters of the man.”
“Portrait is an autobiography of a man”
Oh received a photo of Cardinal Kim from the charity ‘Babonanum’ and donated 3 portraits of him to the charity in October 2012. Other portraits she has painted include 1st to 3rd chief monks of Cheontae Order of Korean Buddhism Guin Temple, former presidents, former army chiefs of staff, former CEOs of Daewoo Securities Co and monk Han Yong-un. Oh is regarded as one of the master portrait painters in terms not only of detailed depiction but also of enlivening the character’s spirit that can be found at the face line, wrinkles and eye color. Oh explains “I study thoroughly about the man’s physique, muscles and skin in addition to historical events happened in relation to the person. This is because a portrait is an autobiography of a man.” Oh showed a great interest in sketch since she was a child and made her dream come true by entering Hongik University Graduate School of Art in her late years. She continues “I have never felt boredom in my 40 years of career in realistic portrait painting. I rather have enjoyed much the studying the person and shifting what I found and felt about the person onto canvas.” And her passion in realistic portrait painting continues in 2016.
“I will keep the dignity of my portrait paintings”
Painting a portrait over a cup of coffee during the day for Oh is truly a valuable time. Oh said that she particularly felt worth when painting religious figures. For this reason, it is not surprising that she is working on 8 portraits of martyrs that will be displayed at Onong Sacred Place in Suwon Parish. Oh already has done restoration of them for the last one year with the help of Director Dr. Cha Ki-gin of the Yangup Church History Research Center. Oh has taken a month to study on each person in order to realize the era, custom, the man’s social status and appearance. Oh says “I usually paid attention to shade and angle of eyelashes, forehead and wrinkles around the mouth but this time, I paid as much effort to put aura of each person in addition. I feel really rewarded for my achievement and future generations can use my works as reference.” If you feel like to go to a gallery today, why not to pay a visit to Oh Dong Hee Portrait Gallery to experience the marvel of realistic portrait paintings that have much developed through the master portraitists like Rubens, Renoir and Rembrandt?
