화려한 색채 속에서 부처님의 진리 엿볼 수 있는 진영 완성해
정갈하고 경건한 마음으로 작품 활동 이어가

부처님을 그림으로 표현하는 작업은 수많은 노력과 집중을 요구한다. 그렇기에 그 그림을 그리는 화가에게는 일반 화가들보다 몇 배 이상의 정신적 수양과 인격 도야가 필요하다. 일산 동구에서 불교회화연구소를 운영하고 있는 이문희 소장은 20여 년의 경력을 갖추고 유일무이한 감각을 통해 불화를 완성해감과 동시에 쉼 없는 자기성찰을 통해 새로운 경지에까지 다다르는 작업을 이어가고 있다.

화려한 색채로 부처님의 참뜻 기리는 작품 완성해
어릴 때부터 그림을 좋아하고 그 실력을 인정받아 온 불교회화연구소 이문희 소장. 부모님은 미술대학에 진학하는 것을 원하지 않았다고 하지만, 미술에 대한 그녀의 꿈은 무엇보다 확고한 것이었다. 대학에서 한국화 전공을 졸업하고 29세에 불화를 처음으로 접한 이문희 소장은 어느덧 20년 가까이 불화를 그려오고 있다. 이 소장이 다니던 절에서 연등축제를 진행할 때 초빙된 불화 선생님을 만났던 것이 오랜 경력의 시작이었다. 이 소장은 "일반 한국화의 선과 불화에서 쓰는 선은 많이 다르다. 회화는 강약이 있고 굵기가 각자 다른데, 불화에서 쓰는 선은 일정한 굵기와 강도를 유지한다. 그 안에서 정해진 형식을 따르며 아름다움을 포착해내는 작업이 매력적이다"라고 말한다.

종교적인 그림으로서 독특한 매력을 갖고 있는 불화이지만, 그러한 형식으로 인해 일반인들에게는 거리감이 느껴지기도 한다. 그러나 이 소장은 바로 그 점이 불화의 매력이라고 말한다. 담백한 평면 안에서 자유롭게 펼쳐지는 화려한 색채와 대비 효과로 인해 보는 이로 하여금 깊은 불심을 느낄 수 있게 하는 것이 이 소장의 작품이다. 한편으로는 일반인들에게까지 다가갈 수 있는 불화를 만들기 위해 연구와 배움을 지속하는 것 역시 그녀가 하는 일 중 하나다.

더 좋은 작품 만들기 위해 석․박사 과정 밟으며 배움 익혀
동광 권오창 선생과 태조 어진 복원사업 참여해
이 소장은 초상화의 대가로 불리는 동광 권오창 선생으로부터 가르침을 받고 있다.. 권오창 선생은 표준영정을 열여섯 점, 태조어진 복원 작업을 여섯 점 째 진행하고 있는 전통 초상화 부문의 대표적인 예술가로 동강 선생은 이 소장에게 육리문(피부 결을 따라 붓질을 하는 표현기법)과 비단을 소재로 하여 뒷면에까지 배색을 하는 ‘배채기법’을 배웠다. 이 소장은 "저는 대부분의 작업을 비단으로 하고 있는데, 뒤에서 배색을 하면 물감이 떨어질 염려가 없고 색에 깊이가 있다. 한 색을 내는 데 20번 가까이 올리는 과정이 쉬운 것은 아니지만 우아한 아름다움을 느낄 수 있다"고 말한다.

이 소장이 만들어내는 작품들은 대부분 진영(얼굴을 그린 화상(畵像))이기 때문에 밑그림 단계에서부터 명확한 그림을 그려낼 수 있어야 한다. 이 소장은 진영 작업을 하며 더욱 명확한 불교미술의 깊은 이해를 위해 2008년 동국대학교 문화예술 대학원에 진학, 올해는 박사과정까지 시작하며 불화의 전통과 현대적 변용을 위해 학문적 도야 역시 아끼지 않고 있다. 

이렇듯 노력을 거듭한 결과 이 소장은 권오창 선생과 함께 전주 어진박물관에서 진행하는 태조 어진 복원사업에 선정되어 참여하게 되었다. 이 소장으로서도 대단한 도전이면서 그녀의 역량을 마음껏 펼쳐 보일 수 있는 기회인 셈이다. 이 소장은 "스님들의 진영을 그리는 화가와 일반 초상화를 그리던 화가에는 구분이 있었다. 선을 그리는 방식이나 붓질의 섬세함 등에서 차이가 있기 때문이다. 그런 만큼 왕의 어진을 그린다는 것 역시 새로운 작업으로, 개인적으로는 매우 영광스러운 경험이라고 할 수 있다"는 뜻을 표했다.

진영 그림에 정성 다하여 정갈한 마음으로 작업 이어가
이 소장에게 진영, 불화는 단순히 그림을 그리는 작업에만 머무르는 것이 아니라, 그 자체로 수행 생활의 일부가 된다. 여느 작품을 그릴 때보다도 경건하고 정갈한 마음으로 그림을 그려나가면서 삶이 힘들 때 그녀를 지탱해 주고 어려움을 이겨나갈 수 있는 힘이 되어준 것이 바로 불교회화였다. 그래서 이 소장은 화실에 불단을 마련하고 기도를 한 후 그림을 그린다. 이와 더불어 항상 바닥에 엎드려 정성을 다해 어진을 그리는데, 부처님에게 경배를 다하는 마음가짐을 갖고 그려야 스스로도 만족할 수 있는 작품이 나오기 때문이다.

물론 오랜 시간 바닥에서 그림을 그린다는 것이 쉬운 일은 아니다. 허리에서 어깨, 등에 이르기까지 아프지 않은 곳이 없었으며, 그림을 그리는 동안은 온 정신을 다해 그리느라고 아픈 줄도 모르지만, 끝나고 나면 이틀 정도는 지쳐서 나가떨어질 정도로 고된 작업이다. 심지어 과로로 입원해야 했던 적도 있었다고 한다.그럼에도 불교회화를 그리기 위해 이 소장은 항상 나를 낮추고 마음가짐을 갖춰 겸허한 자세로 그림을 대한다.

겸허한 자세로 끊임없이 공부하며 새로운 진영과 불화를 만들어내기 위해 최선을 다하고 있는 이문희 소장은 "많은 사람이 할 수 없는 일이라는 것을 알기 때문에 꾸준히 될 때까지 하려고 한다. 저 역시 아직 배우고 있는 입장이라고 생각하며, 함께하는 사람들이 계속 늘어났으면 한다"는 뜻을 전했다. 부처님의 자비를 화폭에 그려내며 누구보다 겸손한 마음으로 자신의 세계를 이룩하고 있는 이 소장에게 파워코리아는 깊은 응원을 보낸다.

Completing Buddha's teachings in splendid colours
Buddhist painter Lee started to show a great interest in painting from her early age and many of her works have been praised by the people in the Buddhist world. Her parents did not want her to major in art but her will was firm and she took a course in Korean Painting. However, it was rather late in her age of 29 that she started to have an interest in Buddhist painting when she met his teacher at a lantern festival held in the temple she used to visit. Lee said "It's already been 20 years that I devoted myself to Buddhist painting. There's a big difference in the lines used in the Korean painting and the Buddhist painting with the latter thicker and the same strength. It's really charming to create a form and beauty within the boundary of these lines." Buddhist painting in fact is really charming in its own terms but gives rather a remote feeling to normal people due to its unique lines and splendid colours. But then again, Lee explains, that is the point of appreciating the work; awakening the Buddhist sentiment by watching the contrast of the thick lines and the splendid colours.

Lee is under the instruction of the master Buddhist painter Gwon Oh-chang (nickname: Dong Gwang). Gwon painted 16 portraits of the deceased and 6 of King's portrait and passed down his style 'Yookrimun (brushing according to the texture of the skin)' and 'Baeche Method (colouring both the front and the back of the silk material)' to Lee. She explained "Giving the background painting to both the front and the back of the silk material prevents the pigment from soaking down to the floor while deepening the colours. Although it takes me a great effort of laying the colour nearly 20 times, the beauty created at the end gives me the greater pleasure." Because most of her works are monk portrait, Lee has to draw the foundation with precision. This was the reason she took a master's course at Dongguk University in 2008 and is currently taking a PhD in the effort of achieving that precision and also applying the traditional methods to modern styles. Thanks to her skill and passion in building professional knowledge in the field, Lee and her teacher Gwon are carrying out the joint project of recovering the portrait of the King Taejo at The Royal Portrait Museum in Jeongju. Lee said "There's a difference between normal portrait and monk portrait in terms of lines and brush work. Painting a king's portrait requires yet another level of technique and I feel really honoured to take the project."

Buddhist painting and monk portrait for Lee is not only her occupation but more importantly a self-training in a way of practicing Buddha's teachings. The creating process makes Lee's heart sincere and reverent and it becomes her source to overcome the pains she suffer from in life. That's why she placed a Buddha statue in her studio and gives a prayer by bowing down her body to the bottom before taking on the work. It is not easy to paint on the floor for a long time as it causes a variety of pains to the body especially in shoulders and the back. At one time, she even fainted and was hospitalized due to the high level intensity of mental (focusing) and physical endurance. Nevertheless, she always takes things in a humble way while being strict on her self. Lee said "Not many people do Buddhist painting nowadays. It means, in a way, that I'm a privileged few so I will keep doing my best through continuous learning and developing my knowledge and skill. But at the same time, I hope more people would know about the charm Buddhist painting can give and be a part of it." Power Korea sends a message of support to Lee.
