교류와 소통에 기반한 구강보건의료 환경 조성에 최선 다할 것

‘치과’는 남녀노소를 막론하고 가장 두렵고 꺼려지는 곳 중 하나다. 그러나 건강한 치아와 구강이야말로 우리 삶의 질을 향상시키는 가장 중요한 요소라는 점에서 꾸준한 구강관리의 필요성은 아무리 강조해도 지나치지 않다. 이에 대한치과위생사협회 경기도회에서는 국민들의 구강보건 증진과 치과위생사의 권익 보호, 지역사회 보건의료의 발전을 위해 앞장서고 있다.

회원 권익 보호와 국민 의료 증진에 앞장서다
최근 美 노동통계국에서는 향후 10년 뒤 가장 크게 성장할 유망직종 중 하나로 ‘치과위생사’를 꼽았다. 치과질환자를 대상으로 진료 및 치료를 협조하고, 구강 관련 질환에 대한 예방 및 구강 관리를 안내하는 치과위생사는 실제 우리가 치과에 방문했을 때 치과의사보다 더 많이 만나게 되는 이들이다. 우리나라의 경우 1961년 처음으로 치과위생사 제도가 도입된 이래 지난 50여 년간 치과병(의)원, 종합병원, 관공서 및 산업체 의무실, 보건(지)소 등을 중심으로 활동영역이 확대되어 왔으며, 특히 경제수준이 향상되며 식생활이 변화하고, 이 영향으로 현대인들의 구강 질환이 증가함에 따라 그 역할과 쓰임이 더욱 다양화되고 있는 추세다. 

이에 대한치과위생사협회 경기도회는 경기도 지역 내에 근무하는 치과위생사들의 권익 보호는 물론, 더 나은 구강보건의료 환경의 구축과 구강건강에 대한 국민적 인식의 확산을 위해 최선의 노력을 다해왔다. 이선미 회장은 “저희는 국민을 가장 가까이에서 만나는 보건의료 전문인으로서의 역할을 다하고자, 더 나은 의료서비스 제공을 위한 교육과 정보 교류, 치아 및 구강 질환의 예방을 위한 안내·지도 및 캠페인 등의 활동을 펼치고 있습니다”라고 설명했다.

경기도회에서는 동남보건대, 수원과학대, 수원여자대, 여주대, 을지대 등의 관할대학과 보건소, 치과의사회, 치과기공사회, 지역 내 병·의원들과의 교류를 강화하고자 다양한 행사 개최 및 지원체계 구축에 힘쓰고 있다. 또한 HR관리자 초청 간담회를 열거나 SNS, 카카오톡 등의 소통 창구를 마련하는 등 회원들의 목소리를 듣고, 이를 적극적으로 수렴함으로써 회원들의 권익증진과 처우개선을 위해 최선의 노력을 다하고 있다.

“아이들의 구강질환 예방을 위해선 관련 제도 개선이 시급해”
현재 동남보건대학교 치위생과 교수로서 치과위생사 전문인력 양성과 학술연구에도 매진하고 있는 이선미 회장은 “구강건강을 지키기 위한 가장 좋은 방법은 바로 예방”이라며, 이를 위해서는 학교구강보건사업의 활성화가 무엇보다도 중요하다고 강조했다. 지난해 10월, 국회의원회관 대회의실에서 개최된 ‘아동구강건강을 위한 학교구강보건실의 활용’ 토론회에 발제자로서 이 같은 내용을 역설하기도 했던 이 회장은 “현재 운영되고 있는 초등학교 구강보건실은 공중보건치과의사와 치과위생사가 주 1회 출장하여 구강보건교육 및 칫솔질교습 등에 한정된 업무를 수행하는 데에 그치고 있습니다. 충지, 잇몸병 등은 한번 생기면 원상회복이 힘든 만큼 소아·청소년기부터 제대로 된 구강관리를 하는 것이 필요하지만, 현재의 일시적이고 제한적인 보건교육 및 예방진료로는 한계가 있습니다”라고 설명했다. 이에 덧붙여 그는 학교구강보건실의 활성화를 위해선 구강보건실 설치 의무화와 관련 제도의 개편, 전담 인력의 배치 등의 개선책이 필요하다고 역설했다.

이처럼 국민들의 구강보건 향상을 위한 노력은 경기도회 회원들이 참여하는 다양한 재능기부 활동과 캠페인 행사, 지역대학 및 지역내 의료기관과 연계된 치과진료 봉사활동, 다문화가족·국군장병·노인층을 대상으로 한 구강건강증진 프로그램 등으로도 이어지고 있다. 뿐만 아니라 경기도회에서는 일본 Honda 구취 클리닉 연수, 스리랑카 치과대학과의 연계 사업 추진, 국제 학술 세미나 참석 등 국제교류사업도 활발히 진행하고 있다. 치과위생사가 자부심과 긍지를 갖고 제 역할에 충실할 수 있도록 환경을 조성함으로써 궁극적으로 국민구강건강 증진에 기여하고자 하는 대한치과위생사협회 경기도회. 이들이 앞장서 나아가고자 하는 길에 건강하고 행복한 대한민국의 환한 미소가 함께하게 되길 기대한다.

Creating an ideal environment for dental health through exchange and communication

Protecting rights and interests of members and promoting dental health
U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics appointed 'dental hygienist' as one of the most promising profession to grow after 10 years. The job gives a support in treating dental patients and provides prevention and management guidance for people. Since the introduction of dental hygienist system in 1961 in Korea, dental hygienists have gradually expanding their services from private and public hospitals to medical service rooms in various institutions and organizations. A recent increase of dental patients also has made the profession more diversified in its roles and practice. In this respect, the Korean Dental Hygienists Association Gyeonggi Province has exerted its effort in protecting rights and interests of the members and promoting dental health of the people in the province. Chairwoman Lee explained "We are doing our best to provide a better dental care service through information exchange and dental disease prevention campaign and giving out the brochures. We are also closely working in cooperation with the universities, hospitals and dental-related associations in the province and are strengthening the cooperation and exchange by holding various events. In addition, we are carefully listen to members' opinions through meetings and on SNS and reflect them in our policy and its execution." 

"Improvement of the system is urgently needed for children's dental health"
Working also as a dental hygienics professor at Dongnam Health University, Lee emphasized on prevention as well as promoting the dental health education for children. At the forum 'Application of School Dental Health Room for Children' held at the National Assembly Member's Office Building in October last year, Lee said "The current system is not very efficient. A dental hygienist pays a visit to the school dental health room once a week to give basic guidance on dental health. But this limited and temporary dental education and treatment cannot be effective as dental diseases are really hard to be recovered to its original state once affected. Therefore, we need to introduce an effective regulation that all schools must run a dental health room with a dental hygienist working in full time." Meanwhile, the Korean Dental Hygienists Association Gyeonggi Province is providing free dental care services to multi-cultural families, soldiers and elderly people in cooperation with regional universities and medical institutions. The association also is actively carrying out international exchange through various programmes such as Honda Bad Breath Clinic in Japan, a joint project with a dental college in Sri Lanka and international seminars and symposiums.
