Flowers, people and landscape orchestrated in soulful colours
"I paint to make the world beautiful“
Painter Choi Gwang-sook

The pictures delivering hope and happiness
Artists say that creation is painful but art works are like their children. Because creation is too painful, they try to understand the art works of Na Hae-suk, Chun Gyeong-ja and Frida Kahlo by seeing them rather than by talking and writing. A Korean painter Choi shows how this physical pain and spirit appear visually in art works. She applies direct and realistic colour to still life and landscape. Choi explained "I painted flowers first and moved on to still life, people and landscape. I have a great sense of colour and use this advantage by adding my own personality to it. My friends often tell me that I'm soft, charismatic and have a strong responsibility. I raised up my children to be someone who can contribute to making a better society while I painted pictures with the hope that the appreciators feel positive and happy when seeing my works." Because Choi feels happiness herself when creating a work, she uses warmful colour like chinese red, crimson lake and burnt sienna. But she completed her duty as a wife and a mother before she fully started to focus on painting in 2005. She comforted her friend who had an accident by painting 'Blooming' for the friend. She suffered from otolithiasis gained during her role of housewife and put her understanding about those times in her works. She started to recover from 2013 and she realized that those times were a process of building up happiness. So she put her feeling of beauty, modesty and affection towards people around her in her works. Family's unsparing support also was a great encouragement for Choi. She said "Like rich people donate part of their money to society, I use my artistic talent to give a little comfort to those who need it. That's why I paint four seasons so that they can feel a warm feeling in nature." Choi emphasizes primary colours with iris and roses, expresses idleness of fields and paddies and polishes ripe pomegranate in her works. Currently, Choi is preparing for the solo exhibition which she had to postpone due to her illness 3 years ago. Power Korea wishes Choi a successful exhibition.
