[Dato’ Rohana Ramli, Ambassador of Malaysia]
The 55th anniversary of diplomatic ties between ROK and Malaysia stimulates cooperation
ROK focuses on rich tourism resources and economic growth of Malaysia

The ROK and Malaysia established diplomatic relations in February 1960. They signed a trade agreement in 1962 and a cultural agreement in 1965. Malaysia is the 33rd largest economy in the world in terms of GDP per capita and is Korea’s second biggest trading partner among Asian countries. As the volume of trade and investment between the two countries has grown steadily, there also has been an increase in number of Korean people traveling to Malaysia and around 15,000 Koreans are currently living in the country. Celebrating the 55th anniversary last year, Power Korea met Dato’ Rohana Ramli, Ambassador of Malaysia, and learned more about the bilateral exchanges.

LEP 2.0 enhances economic and cultural exchanges
Razak visits Korea in December 2014

Since the diplomatic ties in 1960, the ROK and Malaysia have steadily increased the level of cooperation in various fields. They have actively engaged in negotiations of the Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership (RCEP) and in reviewing of the ASEAN-Korea FTA to further liberalize the market while exploring ways to strengthen bilateral engagement channels through the Malaysia–Korea Bilateral Industrial Cooperation (BIC) and the Second Wave of the Look East Policy (also known as LEP 2.0). LEP 2.0 in particular was followed by the success of the first LEP programme which was launched in 1982. The programme provided Korean students an employment opportunity in Malaysia and Malaysian students a chance to study in the field of electronics, computer, chemical, nautical science at various Korean universities. In December 2014, the Malaysian Prime Minister YAB Dato' Sri Mohd Najib Tun Abd Razak visited Korea and Razak and President Park agreed to strengthen cooperation in technology sharing & innovation, development of advanced techniques and capacity building of the LEP 2.0. And to monitor the implementation and progress of the LEP 2.0, both leaders agreed to establish the Malaysia-ROK Economic Cooperation Committee (ECC).

H.E. Ramli said “The Embassy’s investment activities is spearheaded by the Malaysian Investment Development Authority (MIDA) and it organized, with the ASEAN Korean Center, in January 2015, ‘The Outbound Mission on Green Technology’ which invited 15 Korean companies to Malaysia and the Investment and Business Opportunities Seminar on Medical Devices Sector on 3 March 2016. Also, MIDA and Malaysia External Trade Development Corporation (MATRADE) held a business seminar at Lotte Hotel, Seoul in November 2015 to promote trade and investment between the two countries and 282 Korean companies attended the seminar to seek business opportunities in Malaysia.”

ROK-Malaysia, the volume of trade exceeds USD $16.35 billion
337 Korean companies’ presence in Malaysia

According to KITA (Korea International Trade Association)’s 2015 statistics, Malaysia was the ROK’s 13th largest trading partner, 14th largest export destination and 13th largest import source with the volume of bilateral trade totaling US$16.35 billion. The main items of the ROK that were exported to Malaysia in 2015 included Petroleum oils (valued at US$1.53 billion); Electronic integrated circuits (valued at US$801.8 million); Iron and steel structures (valued at US$379.6 million) while the biggest exported product of Malaysia to the ROK was LNG accounting for 24.9% of ROK’s total imports from Malaysia. H.E. Ramli said “There are about 337 Korean companies currently operating in Malaysia with the USD $4.5 billion investments. Korean investors are exceptionally strong in the electronics and electrical products, basic and non-metallic mineral products and chemical products benefitting more than 49,000 Malaysian employees. Some of the representative companies are Lotte Chemical, Samsung, Kiswire LTD and POSCO in the manufacturing sector, and Hyundai Engineering, Hanjin Shipping, Woori Bank and Hyosung Corporation in the service sector. Malaysia is welcoming Korean companies’ investment especially in advanced electronics, ICT, machinery, chemicals, green technology and R&D, the fields in which they already have developed strengths.” For the whole of 2015, Malaysia has been able to attract 22 projects in the manufacturing sector with investments amounting to USD 315.5 million approved from Korea. Korea ranked as the 6th largest foreign investor during the period.

Malaysia attracts more than 310,000 Korean visitors yearly
Ramli, “I will increase people to people contact”

In addition to supporting the active cooperation in trade and investment between the ROK and Malaysia, the Malaysian Embassy in Seoul is promoting various cultural programmes. The Embassy has developed efficient communication channels and tour packages including ‘Malaysia Homestay’, in partnership with agencies, airlines, media and other related bodies, and regularly participates in various cultural fairs to promote Malaysian culture in Korea. But even without these programmes, Malaysia’s beautiful forests and beaches as well as rice-based food are already enough to attract tourists not only from Korea but from the world. In terms of tourist arrivals from Korea, 311,838 Koreans visited Malaysia from January to September 2015 and this is a 5.8% increase on the same period in 2014. Based on this statistics, the Embassy is expecting more than 400,000 Korean visitors to Malaysia this year.

The Embassy especially recommends ‘Malaysia Homestay’ as visitors can have the opportunity to stay with a local family and experience the food, lifestyle and culture. H.E. Ramli said “Malaysia and ROK have built excellent political ties and a robust trade and investment relationship for the last 56 years. Korea’s miraculous economic growth in particular was a great inspiration to Malaysia. I will keep providing my utmost effort in promoting investment and trade between the two countries but at the same time I will give a particular effort in increasing people to people contact so that the scope for cooperation will be more diversified.” With its objective to create a knowledge-based economy and the goal to become a high income nation by 2020, Malaysia will continue and expand the level of cooperation with the ROK.
