황칠, 약리효과 인정받아 세계로 진출하다

황칠은 황칠나무의 진액으로 고대부터 각종 공예에 애용되어온 한국 특산종이다. 휴림황칠의 조창수 대표는 이 황칠에서 발견한 약리 성분을 비롯한 다양한 유효성분을 현대적으로 개발해 세계에 알리는 데 앞장서고 있다. 황칠은 옻나무 수액을 채취하여 칠하는 옻칠과 같은 전통 공예기술이다. 황칠나무 표피에 상처를 내면 노란 액체(진액)가 나오는데 이것을 모아 칠하는 것을 황칠이라고 한다. 황칠은 전통적으로 가구의 도료나 금속·가죽의 도료로 사용되는 한국 특산종으로, 해외 조공과 왕실 등의 수탈 때문에 지역 백성들을 착취하는 수단이 되면서 백성들이 스스로 황칠나무를 베어버리는 일까지 일어나며 근대까지 거의 맥이 끊길 뻔했던 역사를 가졌다. 그러나 휴림황칠(주)(www.hdpmac.com) 조창수 대표는 이러한 황칠의 약성을 최대한 살린 제품들을 현대에 맞는 다양한 형태로 개발해 국내뿐 아니라 해외 시장까지 특산물 황칠의 명성을 알리고 있다.

2013년 창업한 휴림황칠(주), 황칠에서 치료물질발견
요산, 콜레스테롤 수치 등 정상수치로 감소 보여 
현재 14년 차 나무농사꾼인 조창수 대표가 처음 황칠을 접한 것은 8년 전이었다. 서울에서 5년 간 직장생활을 하던 조 대표는 귀농을 결심한 뒤 2003년 하동에 자리를 잡았고, 8년 전 산림자원 연구소 박사님으로부터 소개받은 것이 약용되는 황칠나무로, 강렬한 인상을 받았다.

오랫동안 재배법이나 맥이 끊겼던 황칠은 재배부터 연구 활용까지 모든 과정이 쉽지 않았다. 아열대 식물인 황칠을 내륙에서 재배하는 법을 정립하고, 황칠의 약리효과를 알게 되어 본격적 연구에 발 들이게 된 조 대표는 하동 황칠재배단지 성립에 성공하면서 2013년 휴림황칠(주)를 창업하고 황칠 약리성분을 활용한 천연건강식품을 개발 출시했다. 

“문헌에 황칠은 동맥경화 방지, 관상동맥 질환에 효과가 있어 당뇨병과 고혈압, 간 기능 개선에도 탁월하고 강력한 항암 효과와 뼈와 치아의 재생을 도와주는 효능이 있다고 알려져 있다. 이에 현대인들의 성인병예방과 치료에 도움을 줄 수 황칠을 이용한 다양한 제품개발을 통해 국민건강에 이바지하고자 노력, 이에 하동 재배농장에서 수확한 황칠나무 줄기와 잎을 엄선해 추출과정을 거쳐 생산되는 과정에서 특허등록 4건과 6건의 특허출원과 디자인, 상표등록을 마쳤고, 안정성평가연구소에서도 ‘부작용이 거의 없는 안전물질’이라는 결과와 2015년 벤처기업 인증까지 얻어냈다”

휴림황칠의 제품을 ㈜녹십자 랩셀에 의뢰하여 임상 실험한 결과 요산(uric acid)수치 감소 및 트리글리세리드(TG) 및 총콜레스테롤(total cholesterol)의 함량 감소도 확인하였다. 이에 콜레스테롤 수치에서는 고콜레스테롤 환자 13명 중 11명이 정상 수치로 감소되어 황칠추출물이 피를 맑게 하는 것을 확인하였다. 또한, 통풍을 갖고 있는 연구대상자 13명 중 13명이 요산수치가 떨어졌는데 그중 3명이 정상수치로 돌아왔다는 결과를 나타내었다. 현재 광주, 진주 판매점에서 휴림황칠의 제품을 오프라인 판매하고 있으며 온라인 판매로 영역을 넓혀 입소문을 타고 고객들이 늘고 있는 추세다. 

조 대표는 “작년 황칠에만 있는 골다공증 치료물질을 발견해 연구 중이며 2월 4일 미국 투자자와 하동군 휴림황칠 500만 불 MOU 체결 및 2월 25일 중국바이어 수출 초청 상담회를 갖는 등 해외시장의 진출을 앞두고 있으며, 3월에는 베트남 초도상품을 수출 예정이다. 

특히 황칠 비누는 무(無)파라벤 제품으로 화학 성분이 전무하여 먹을 수 있는 비누라 할 정도로 안정성이 높아 씻고 바른 후 그대로 두어도 뛰어난 보습효과로 국내외에서 주목 받고 있는 제품이다”라고 말했다. 현재 황칠 농장 규모 10만주 재배로 월 5~10억 생산능력을 가진 휴림황칠은 건강 기능식품 원료와 천연물질 약원료 연구 생산에 중점을 두고, 2015년 농림부 선정 100대 우수농업인으로 선정되어 경남의 브랜드 가치를 높이고 있다.

통풍 개선 건강기능식품․식품․화장품 등 개발 박차 가해
연구소, 대학교 등과 연계해 신뢰할 수 있는 연구 결과 도출할 것
휴림황칠은 직접 재배한 황칠나무로 엑기스를 추출하고 특허등록 및 유통하면서 현재, 황칠나무의 추출물을 활용한 통풍 개선 건강기능식품을 개발 준비 중이다. 오프라인과 온라인에서 황칠맥, 황칠비누, 건조 나무와 건조 잎을 생산 판매 중인 휴림황칠은 신제품 연구개발에 박차를 가해 황칠삼계탕용 육수를 개발하고 5월부터 판매 예정이다.

그 밖에도 통풍, 골다공증 예방에 좋은 황칠진액 연구를 지속하고 있는 조 대표는 최근 해외 시장 진출을 위한 MOU를 체결하며 1만 평 식재를 시작했고 임업, 농업인들이 협업관계로 원자재 수매 시스템을 제작해 상생을 계획 중이다. 또한 한국화학연구원, 안정성 평가 연구소와 연계한 신약품질개발에 주력, 산학협력체로 경상대학교, 부산대학교, 인제대학교, 창원대학교, 한국국제대학교 등과 협약을 맺고 더 질 높고 신뢰성 있는 연구결과를 얻어내기 위해 노력하고 있다.

“황칠나무는 예부터 임산농업의 화수분이었던 인삼을 잇는 차세대 황금작물이다. 농촌뿐 아니라 사회적으로 고령화가 진행되고 성인병 예방이 화두로 떠오른 국내는 물론 세계 시장 진출을 통해 인류 전체에 도움이 되고 우리 고유종인 황칠의 우수성을 알려 국가 브랜드로 성장하는 원동력으로 기여하고 싶다”

휴림황칠은 건강 제품 뿐 아니라 식생활에서도 쉽게 황칠을 섭취할 수 있도록 황칠 재첩국, 된장, 고추장 등의 식품과 화장품 등으로 소비자들의 건강한 생활을 통한 건강한 웃음을 지켜갈 예정이다. 또한 농업, 제조가공, 치유와 힐링을 겸한 ‘황칠 큐어&힐링타운’을 건설해 세계인의 발길을 하동으로 끌어들이는 미래 사업을 먼 시각으로 내다보며 큰 걸음을 걷고 있다.

Pioneering the global market with medicinal effect of yellow lacquer
Yellow lacquer is the sap of the Korean yellow lacquer tree and it has been used for making handicraft since ancient times. CEO Jo of Hulim Hwangchil found medicinal effect in the sap and developed it into beneficial products and is spreading its excellent effect to the world. If you give a scar on the yellow lacquer tree, it produces the yellow sap and this is used as varnish for furniture, metal and leather. Due to the benefit it brings, it once was a means of the power elites' exploitation of the local people and the people at one time cut off all the trees to avoid the exploitation. However, Hulim Hwangchil (www.hdpmac.com) is succeeding the tradition in modern terms.

Jo finds medicinal effect on the sap of yellow lacquer tree
Reducing the level of cholesterol and uric acid
Jo had earned his bread and butter on trees for 14 years before he happened to know about yellow lacquer 8 years ago. After working in Seoul for 5 years, he decided to live in a rural area and settled down in Hadong County in 2003. He then came to know about the medicinal effect of yellow lacquer by a doctor of a forest resources research institute. The cultivation of this subtropical plant inland and making it into a product was not easy. But Jo secured a cultivation area and established Hulim Hwangchil in 2013 and produced related dietary supplement. Jo says "According to old books, yellow lacquer is good for hematosis, coronary arteries, diabetes, high blood pressure, cancer and improves the functions of liver and teeth. I have obtained 4 patents and applied for 6 patents and finished the registration of their designs and trade marks. All of our products have passed a safety examination and I also received a venture enterprise certificate in 2015." According to a medical test carried out by Green Cross LabCell, Jo's products reduced the level of uric acid, triglyceride and total cholesterol in the body. The 11 out of 13 patients with high cholesterol were reported to have normal level of cholesterol after taking the products and all 13 gout patients experienced a reduction in uric acid and 3 of them actually came back to its normal level. The products are sold on/off line in designated sites and stores in Gwangju and Jinju. Jo continues "Last year, I found that it is also effective for osteoporosis and I'm carrying out a research at the moment. On 4 February, I signed a USD $5M MOU with an American buyer. I also had an invitational export meeting with a Chinese buyer on 25 of the same month and I'm scheduled to start to export our products to Vietnam from this month. Our Yellow Lacquer Soap is really popular as it dose not contain paraben or any chemical substance but has an excellent effect of moisture." The farms that Hulim Hwangchil is running can cultivate yellow lacquer worth KRW 500 million to 1 billion a month and CEO Jo was appointed as one of the 100 excellent farmers by the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs in 2015.

Pushing forward a continuous R&D
CEO Jo is currently developing products that can improve gout. Also, he is planning to release yellow lacquer meat broth that can be used for yellow lacquer ginseng chicken soup. In addition, he is preparing to build an original material purchasing system with related industry officials. For this, Jo has signed various business agreements with the Korea Research Institute of Chemical Technology, the Korea Institute of Toxicology, Gyeongsang National University, Busan National University, Inje University, Changwon National University and The International University of Korea. Jo concluded "Yellow lacquer tree is a highly beneficial produce. It can not only promote the health of global citizens but also the national competitiveness of Korea." Meanwhile, CEO Jo is working on developing the yellow lacquer products for food and cosmetics over dietary supplement and is planning to build 'hwangchil cure & healing town' in Hadong County in the hope of attracting foreign tourists to the region.
