Krzysztof Majka, Ambassador of Poland
Korea and Poland enhances partnership through active cultural exchange
Polish Embassy to hold plentiful events in 2016 to spread Polish culture in Korea

Establishing diplomatic ties in 1989 and signing various agreements in investment, trade, tax and aviation in the same year, Korea (ROK) and Poland have been continuously widening the scope of cooperation and their 27 years of exertion in economic cooperation has made Poland emerge as the biggest economic partner of Korea among Central European countries. Taking advantage of this remarkable achievement, the Polish Embassy in Seoul is actively carrying out a variety of cultural events in order to enhance its cultural presence in Korea. Hereupon, Power Korea had a chance to look through the details of the past and coming up events.

Maestro Antoni Wit performs with the Seoul Philharmonic Orchestra
The largest scale exhibition “Polish Art: An Enduring Spirit”

The Polish Embassy in Seoul aims to give more opportunities for Korean people to be familiar with the Polish culture in 2015/2016. First of all, Maestro Antoni Wit, who is often called as Karajan of Poland, gave a fantastic performance with the Seoul Philharmonic Orchestra on 24 March last year at the Seoul Arts Center in Seocho-gu. He and the orchestra poured their passion into the song Symphony no.3, “Eroica” by Ludwig Van Beethoven and it was splendid. Wit, who has released 150 albums with major labels including EMI and Sony, also collaborated with the Ukrainian violinist Valeriy Sokolov on the day and they together extended the boundary of classical music. Also, the Polish pianist Maciej Grzybowski gave a marvelous performance on Chopin’s Night Concert as part of the exhibition “Polish Art: An Enduring Spirit” held at the National Museum of Korea for two months until August 2015. It was the largest scale exhibition held outside of Poland and 250 treasures of Polish sculptures, paintings, handicrafts, weapons, medals and posters were displayed. It also included some special exhibits related to Fryderyk Chopin and Nicolaus Copernicus, such as the cast of Chopin's hand or the book by Nicolaus Copernicus "On the Revolutions of the Celestial Spheres" (De revolutionibus Orbium Coelestium) published in 1543.

The popularity of Frederic Chopin in Korea has been growing, especially after the South Korean pianist Cho Seong-jin was announced as the winner of the 17th “International Fryderyk Chopin Piano Competition” in Warsaw in October 2015. This has certainly brought global attention to both Poland and Korea. In the same month, 300 letters were written by Korean children in Incheon and passed through the Ambassador to their peers in Polish city of Wroclaw – it was a symbolic handing over of the World Book Capital title from Incheon to Wroclaw. As a continuous effort, the Polish Embassy is set to promote Wroclaw and Polish literature by organizing Children’s Book Day in Incheon. There also was a notable event: ‘Embassy Day in Seoul’ (June 2015). It was the second time cultural festival organized by the City of Seoul and World Masters Committee. Mrs. Zofia Majka, spouse of the Polish Ambassador, received an award “plaque of appreciation” from the President of the World Masters Committee in recognition of support. H.E. Majka said in his congratulatory speech “The role of international cultural exchange is very important as we can learn more about other countries and can build mutual trust and understanding.”

H.E. Majka, “I will give my unsparing effort in spreading Polish culture in Korea”
‘Polish Day in Seoul’ and ‘Exhibition: Courage and Reconciliation’ to be held

As for 2016, the Embassy is planning to provide a continuous support to the Korean dance group “Mazurka”. It is a Polish folk band composed of Korean students majoring in Polish at Hankuk University of Foreign Studies (HUFS) and the Embassy actually has been supporting the band for a long time. It is one of the best Korean-led initiatives to enjoy and promote Polish culture. To further strengthen the cultural activities at HUFS, in May, the Embassy will hold the very successful annual event ‘Polish Oratorical Contest’ in cooperation with the Polish Department.
The promotion of Polish cuisine is also on the agenda for this year. As part of the promotion campaign the Embassy will publish a cookbook in Korean language featuring Polish-Korean fusion cuisine.

Also in the same month, ‘Polish Day in Seoul’ is scheduled to be held at the main square near the Seoul City Hall and various Polish products are to be displayed on the day. In October, there will be a conference titled: ‘Polish Experience in Political and Economic Transformation as a Valuable Tool in Reunification of Korea’. The conference is accompanied by ‘Exhibition: Courage and Reconciliation’ which will present the reconciliation process between Poland and Germany and the exhibition will be continued in the universities and institutes dealing with issues regarding Korean reunification.

H.E Majka said “Poland is particularly rich in culture and I will give my unsparing effort in spreading Polish culture in Korea through a variety of exchanges and events this year.” If you are interested in experiencing the rich Polish culture this year, you can visit the website of the Polish Embassy in Seoul for more information.
