[Cover] Eastern-style painter Lee Ji-soo
"Blue is the colour of smile"

Lee's works flow like a warm spring heart
I wasn't happy. I wanted to see the sea under the sun. But my gloomy arms and legs were only floundering in the heaviness. I asked the sky when I was walking down the streets and alleys in the city; Why am I yearning for the sky and the sea? <a note of Lee>

The art world centered on blue
Lee combined oriental and western elements in her works in ink drawings or portraits. Blue & Blue especially is one of her representative works. Blue gives an intense feeling extroversively but an emotional change introversively. Lee says Blue as the colour of smile.

Blue is a pure colour which we cannot make it by mixing other colours. It symbolizes the sky and the sea in terms of space and midday in terms of time and young and manliness in abstract terms. It is also a series of energies. The desire to see the sky and the sea or the opposite sex or the cherished memories all generates energies. It causes a movement to pressure and weight in the sate of stillness.

This change is not moving to other places but it is a mental running on the spot. It is the colour of relationship for yearning each other. Lee explains this as 'the distance of smile' in which the smile still remains in the cut and bruised past.

In this respect, blue is the colour that solace her mind. It is the reflection of the past and the present of where she is now.

Unique finger style instead of brush
Lee's works are born from self confession and healing time of the past. Lee pursues happiness even in the time of pain. She could smile more in the moments of pain and this of her strength has become the power for her life which will last till the end.

The black images appear on Lee's works remind us of trees and reeds. They seem unstable as if they are disappearing at this moment. Or they might be a trace of things that accepted their fate. But an existence itself is a beautiful thing like someone said. Lee learns about a limitation of plants that have a shorter life span than human beings. The black background and expression therefore are a trace of the shadows of living things.

Lee's working process has intention to arouse senses and to narrow the distance of the canvas. The reeds on the wind and the petals on the blue background are similar to the wound that are healing or the smily lips of a person. Lee says "Paintings are the spring in which I wake up from the harsh winter, and the heart that starts to best a new rhythm for life."

Love of ink smell calls the yearning for oriental painting
It is reported that the public interest in Korean painting are increasing due to the stagnant art market and the price drop in western painting in Korea. Or it might be the fusion -western- Korean painting that the public find an attraction.

Regardless the current trend, Lee always has sticked to her own way. She demonstrated a great talent in numerous art competitions through her school days. When in a university, she tried to break the traditional mould of oriental painting which she received both supportive and negative responses from professors.

Lee was much influenced from her father and great-grandfather, who found a great pleasure in calligraphy, for being an eastern-style painter. She remembers "I liked ink smell very much. It is the smell of time, the longest lasting energy and I was proud of it."

Once focusing on work, Lee spends the whole half day without even a movement. This of her passion is an endless happiness for her.

Walking a single path in support of family
Lee says that her family played a great role for her to be where she is today. She is the 6th daughter of 7 sisters and brothers. Under her strict father and busy mother, she always wanted to be a good daughter.

Childhood memory can affect even when one becomes a grownup. For Lee, the process of concentrating on work is the time of a private record of reminiscence and healing of the past. Lee's family members know about this more than anyone else and always give an unsparing support for her. Thanks to this effort, Lee entered and graduated a university as a top student. Her husband also played a supportive role by being her soul mate. For this reason, the word 'family' for Lee is really special.

Lee adds "I hope people can feel the sea and the wind through my works even for awhile. If an unknown poem can be added to the feeling, the warm spring might come again in their wishes and they would find a little comfort in this harsh and painful lives."
