Book cafe 'SOTONG (communication)' attracts citizens of Busan

Cafe SOTONG CEO Hwang In-ho

Book cafe 'SOTONG' creates a sensation in Busan

SOTONG is a 1,200 square meter double floor book cafe located between Busan City Hall and Yangjeong Station. The cafe has a large tree with a swing hanging on it, large library-like book shelves and terraces, various props and antiques, and comfortable furniture as well as a character shop. Apart from books, SOTONG also has comics, magazines and animations. The cafe menu includes two shot coffee and lemonade, ice flakes, tea and smoothy. You can also taste one of the best breads and brunches in Busan and students can use Donggulbang (cave room) which is quiet and has dolls and bed-like furniture. In addition, the cafe has a home theater with a large screen for animation lovers. CEO Hwang chose Busan to open the cafe as the rent and labor cost in Seoul are relatively more expensive. He says "There are many privately run cafes and franchised stores in Busan. But I wanted to give a diversity like some stores that run as a restaurant at lunch time and a bar in the evening. So I brought up an idea of running a book cafe combined with the concept of comic store. Customers can relax and have their own free time at only KRW 3,000 per hour and over 90% of our customers are all regulars.

Listening to what people want leads to a success

Hwang says "The reason the once booming book cafe business took a downturn was because of the unbalance between operating cost and profits as well as high rental fee. But I knew that many people paid a visit to nearby comic cafes for a rest after work or weekend and decided to provide the similar but much upgraded version of book cafe where people can relax and recharge their energy." SOTONG attracts many people in couples, friends and families. It is impressive to see a mother reads a magazine or novel, father comics and children their choice of books in a Donggulbang of SOTONG. Hwang says "I feel that people still prefer to read comics in paper rather than on a smart phone and I feel really proud that my cafe satisfies the wants and demands of all age groups and sex as a fun and resting place. My customers now includes not only the citizens of Busan but they come from all over the nation."

Taking slow step for franchise

Hwang's management philosophy is to provide customer-centered services. But it is difficult to manage the 1,2000 square meter cafe. For this, Hwang hired 20 professional staff in each field including chefs and baristas so that each customer can enjoy an ultimate experience at the cafe. Meanwhile, Hwang is receiving inquiries about franchise. He says "I'm not yet sure whether the success I made here in Busan will also happen at Myeong-dong in Seoul due to different customer base. So I want to carry our a thorough market research especially in relation to profitability before launching a franchise in ernest." Hwang also mentions about government support "I once tried for the youth startup support but each department didn't seem to have consistency in handling the process. For example, the construction department says ok but the health and hygiene department said no. We are experiencing many fusion-style businesses nowadays in the market and the government needs to introduce or improve related law or regulations accordingly to promote this new industries." If you are one of those who are looking for a nice place to relax over a coffee and a book, why not try this unique book cafe SOTONG? Power Korea hopes that Hwang will create a new and sound culture in Korea over Busan.
