Pyrographer Choi Moo-sung
Korea's representative pyrographer Choi Moo-sung
Listed in the final at Richeson 75 Figure & Portrait International Contest Exhibition (US) in 2013

Works of pyrography made with a red-hot iron
Choi gets influenced from his painter father

To create a work of pyrography (or wood burning), one should use a red-hot iron to draw an image on wood, paper or cloth. It is relatively less known in Korea while it has been popular in other countries especially in China (called Nakhwa) and Japan (called Sohwa). However, we can find pyrography in Damyang County where bamboo crafts (bamboo tobacco pipe and fan) were widely practiced and people used a red-hot iron to draw something on the surface of bamboo (called Nakjook or Nakgak types). Among not many pyrographers in Korea, Choi Moo-sung probably is the most famous who has carried out various methods before he completed his unique style. He started to draw pictures from early age, much influenced by his painter father. His father was born and grew up in Seoul. Despite difficult financial situations, he drew pictures on US' Army's used tent cloth or cotton cloth by using paints gained from PX (post exchange). By that time, Choi realized that it was important to have an eye to see beyond objects in order to be an artist. His father's dream was to have an exhibition at Noyes Museum of Art (US). But when it was fulfilled by Choi himself, he could not help but briming up with tears. He became a child breadwinner, had to carry out both study and earning a keep at the same time, painted really hard like his hands were covered with blisters, and he finally could be able to participate in the exhibition with the money he saved by selling his works.

'A Feast of Light' and 'Trace' as representative works
Choi happen to see an ad on The Joongang Ilbo that a trade company recruits painters in 1973 which made him step his foot in the art world. When he came to know Jang Am, who was famous for pyrography and won a special prize at Seoul Crafts Goods Competition, he entered the world of pyrography. He traveled around the nation to find quality hardwoods. He said "Nowadays, I use maple tree and birch tree. I used to use linden tree or alder tree but it's hard to find the hardwood of them." It has been 43 years that Choi walked a single path of pyrography. His passion in pyrography is extraordinary that when he saw a pyrographer who appeared on MBC Myeoki-daehangjin (Magica Show), he said to him "Pyrography is not a magic but art." He was invited from numerous exhibitions even in Japan but he said "No" because he did not want to be a victim of those fame and commercial-driven exhibitions. But he silently focused on his own works and produced numerous impressive works such as 'Trace', 'Hui (rest)', 'Abundance In Summer', 'Thirst', 'Hope' and 'Shell'. 'A Feast of Light' in particular is an oil painting and he recreated his childhood memory.

Creative ideas to break traditional ideas
Participating competitions in the US and Japan

Choi wants to improve the public recognition that pyrography is a craft rather than an art. He says "Koreans tend to downgrade the genres that do not appear on the national textbooks. But the thing is that the new and innovative works naturally cannot appear on the textbook." To improve the limitation of wood and iron of pyrography, Choi has applied various materials, methods and techniques. As a result, Choi was listed in the final at Richeson 75 Figure & Portrait International Contest Exhibition in the Other Media category (US) in 2013 with a portrait of Sioux Indian appeared on the movie 'Dances With Wolves (1990)'. The judges were impressed by the vitality expressed on the portrait and Choi was also chosen as a Korean Art Culture Master in the pyrography category by the Federation of Korea Art & Culture Organization in the same year. Choi also won Gold Prize with his work 'Banga Series 1' at the International Art Competition held by Osaka Art Critic Association last year. He realized a unique smile and beauty of Buddha in 'Bangasang (Buddhist image sitting cross-legged)'. Recently, he gave academic lectures on 'Traditional Korean Paintings' to the members of Media Concert at Bucheon Sororo Gallery.

"Government support for artists is needed"
Healing the feelings of alienated people with art

Choi says "Making a work as you see is not an art. One must put his own life and thinking into his work. Creative economy comes from creative culture. There's no difference for artists whether they lived in the 60s or now in terms of finance. Artists live with artistic spirit and in that terms, I particularly want to show my gratitude to the US Army from which I gained the materials for my works, and to my family who always gave a support." Choi also found his strength from Park Wan-seo's autobiographical novel 'Was The Mountain Really There?' whenever he was feeling down. The US Army PX and Chosanghwabu Building used to be located where Shinsegae Department Store is now near Namsan Mountain and Choi, and the novelist, might have shared similar memories and sentiments. Choi says "I want to create works that can heal the feelings of alienated people in our society in the future." Power Korea hopes that Choi's works can improve the public recognition on pyrography and more disadvantaged people can find a handful of comfort in his works.
