[Artist Gwon Myeong-sook]
Western-style painter delivers warm and lifelike sceneries on canvas
Recognized through numerous solo and group exhibitions

Gwon puts Korea's beautiful landscape onto canvas
Catching lifelike images of mountains, fields, trees and flowers

Since she was a child, Gwon drew pictures for her teacher and she was praised for her talent from her middle school art teacher. Gwon painted almost overnight during those times but the more she painted the clearer the soul she had. Gwon says "The process of completing a work itself was pleasure for me and I found my passion and satisfaction in it." Gwon was born in Siheung City, Gyeonggi Province and grew up surrounded by rural scene. Thanks to her grandfather's love of flowers, she also knew a lot about the kinds of flowers. With this influence, Gwon actually visits the place to paint a picture. Her works seem like western painting but they contain the elements of traditional Korean paintings also. You find these elements in ridges and colourful trees and flowers in her works which we can easily see around us. But her use of serene colours and bold lines express nature's vitality and warmness at the same time. Through this process, Gwon makes nature and us as one.

"I wish people could see unlimited love of nature through my work“
Winning 2014 Global Korean Honoree Award

Gwon continues "My atelier is everywhere around me. When I see a cloud floating through the sky, it makes me conjure up an image for a picture. The world is beautiful if you see it with open mindedness. I want to deliver my message that we should stop destroying this beautiful nature through my work." Being an artist is not an easy job. Especially when it comes to the fact that Gwon actually visits the place she wants to paint which makes her physically exhausted. She says "But I become happy whenever I think about creating art works. It makes me concentrate on the process of creating something my own and it is a haven of my life." Meanwhile, Gwon has held or participated numerous exhibitions including the National Museum of Modern Art (Philippines), Sunshine City (Tokyo), Lauli An, Seogyeong Gallery, United Gallery, World Water Colour Competition (China, Japan, Taiwan, Korea), Korea-China International Art Exchange Exhibition (Yantai, Jeongdo in China, Anyang in Korea), and America International (New Mexico, Albuquerque, New Jersey). Gwon won 2014 Global Korean Honoree Award in the western painting category, and the special prize at Gyeonggi Art Competition. She also served as a judge of Gwanak Modern Art Competition.

"Making art closer to people's lives is needed"
Gwon plans to put Chinese landscape onto canvas

While serving as a judge of Gwanak Modern Art Competition, Gwon learned a lot about the unique styles of other artists and wanted to make them communicate with more people. However, Gwon regrets that most artists in Korea hardly get by and those who wish to be an artist also easily give up their dream due to harsh financial difficulty most artists are facing. She says "Making art closer to people's lives is very important for both artists and the public. I feel regretful whenever I see the walls of the lobby of a company blank with nothing to hang on. Art gets alive when communicating with society." It is Gwon's motto to do her best and God will do the rest. But the best in this case not only applies to her own work itself but communicating with more people. When asked about her goal, Gwon said that she would also want to put beautiful foreign landscape onto canvas. For this, she is planning to make a sketch trip to China in April this year. Power Korea wishes Gwon a great 2016.
