불상의 오묘하고 신비한 아름다움은 어느 건축물과 비교해 보아도 독특한 위치를 선점하고 있다. 비칠 듯 비치지 않는 미소와 평온한 손짓, 그 안에서 느껴지는 열반의 경지를 빚어내기 위해 많은 석공들이 자신의 일생을 바친다. 80년대 후반부터 (주)연미석재에서 불상 작업과 작품 활동, 수출 등 다방면의 업무를 이어오고 있는 이수희 대표는 미끄러지듯 딱 떨어지는 선과 거친 돌 표면의 대비에서 나오는 명징한 심상을 구현하며, 아름다움의 경지를 한 차례 끌어올린 것으로 평가받고 있다.

1989년 (주)연미석재 설립하고 수출 작업해
충청남도 서천에서 태어나 어린 시절부터 돌과 가까이 지냈던 이수희 대표는 서울로 상경하면서 석재 일을 시작했다. 올해로 43년 째 관련 직종에 종사하며 한 길을 간 이 대표는 우리나라 수출의 호황기였던 70년대 후반부터 90년대 후반 IMF 사태를 맞아 국내 경기가 어려워질 때를 모두 겪으며 변화되는 환경에 맞춰 여러 경험을 해왔다.

군대를 제대하고 나와서 30대 초반의 나이였던 1987년에 이 대표는 대전에서 연미석공예사를 열고, 그로부터 2년 뒤 논산으로 부지를 옮겨 가면서 (주)연미석재로 사업체를 변경해 지금까지 이어오고 있다. 중국, 일본 등 주변국과의 수출을 진행하면서 항상 모든 일이 잘 맞아떨어지기만 했던 것은 아니었다.

수출 일을 하면서 사업체를 세웠지만 모든 것을 몸으로 익혀야 했던 이 대표에게 현장에서의 여러 돌발 상황은 여전히 어려운 일이었다. 1992년 중국으로 투자계획과 관련한 수출 건으로 출장을 나갔을 때는 스케줄 조정이 잘못되어 별다른 소득을 올리지 못하고 돌아오는 일까지 있었다. 그럼에도 이 대표가 지금까지 (주)연미석재를 이어올 수 있었던 것은 처음 시작하면서부터 가졌던 '차별화된 경영을 하자'는 생각 때문이다.

일본 석재 전문회사, 대전 구한사 등 불상 작업해
이수희 대표는 비교적 젊은 나이에 석재 일을 시작한 뒤부터 돌에 대한 애정을 가슴 깊이 품어 왔다. 이 대표는 충청남도 미술대전 조소부문 우수상, 전국 기능경기대회 수상 등 여러 부문에서 그 실력을 인정받은 바 있다. 

이 대표는 제14회 (사)한국석조각예술인협회 정기전과 문화재기능인작품전, 한글미술대전, 온궁미술대전 등을 비롯한 다양한 전시에 자신의 작품을 출품해 본인만의 특별한 예술 세계를 선보였다. 한편, 그는 일본의 석재 전문 회사인 태양물산과 함께 공원묘지 내 본체 7m, 좌대를 포함하면 15m 규모의 부처상을 작업하였으며, 대전 구한사의 본체 7m, 좌대를 포함하면 14m 규모의 미륵부처상 역시 작업했다.

이 대표는 "구한사의 미륵부처상은 특히 배경에도 많은 신경을 썼다. 좌대에는 팔금강 역사 조각, 본체 뒤에는 팔부신장, 밑에는 팔상도, 좌우측에 각각 비천상, 기단의 가장 밑 부분에는 십이지신을 새겨 아름다움을 표현했다"고 밝혔다.

직원 복지 개선에 최선 다해 업계의 어려움 돌파할 것
앞으로도 작품 활동 꾸준히 이어가며 성장할 것
어느덧 중견 작가의 반열에 올라선 이수희 대표가 (주)연미석재를 운영하며 세운 철학은 석재 일을 하는 사람들이 힘든 일을 한다는 편견을 깨는 것이다. 이를 위해 이 대표는 89년 주식회사로 전환하면서 근로기준법에 준한 작업을 진행하고 있다. 흔히 3D 업종이라고 불리는 석재 회사들이 거의 매일 초과근무와 주말 작업을 이어가는 어려운 작업 환경에 놓여있다는 점을 안타까워 한 이 대표는 아침 8시부터 오후 5시 근무, 야간수당, 공휴일과 일요일 휴무를 원칙으로 세우고 직원 복지에도 신경 쓰고 있다.

한편 이 대표는 석재 업계의 고질적인 어려움에 대해서 안타까움을 피력했다. 그는 "일 자체가 힘들기 때문에 준비하고 적응하고 기능을 습득하는 데 4~5년이 걸린다. 그 기간 동안 일을 열심히 배우면서 생활을 이어갈 수 있는 것은 엄청난 노력이 필요한 일이다. 그렇기 때문에 업계 자체에서 직원들을 위한 복지에 신경 쓰고 후학 양성에 힘써야 할 것이다"라고 말했다.

이 대표는 앞으로 작품 활동과 명인 등록 등을 준비하면서 (주)연미석재를 꾸준히 운영해갈 뜻을 표시했다. (주)연미석재는 현재의 직원과 함께 석재 작업과 수출을 꾸준히 이어가며 성장해가고 있다. "한 곳에 오래 몸담은 만큼, 나이를 먹어갈수록 활력을 찾는 것이 중요하다"고 말하는 이 대표. 그렇기에 이 대표는 더 밝은 미래를 상상할 수 있는 것이다. 그의 앞길에 무한한 응원과 기대를 품어본다.

Master stonemason who has walked a single path for 43 years
Establishing Yeonmi Stones in 1989
Lee was born in Seoncheon County, South Chungcheong Province. He started to get involved in the stone industry when he moved his base to Seoul. During his 43 years of career, he has gone through every turns and twists from the late 70s to the 90s, the era when IMF struck Korea. When he was discharged from the army in his earl 30s in 1987, Lee opened Yeonmi Stones & Crafts and moved the base to Nonsan City with the current name. Although he has exported many of his works to Japan and China, there have been many problems Lee had to go through. At one time, he had nothing on his hand due to an unorganized business trip to China in relation with investment and export. Nevertheless, he always has firmly sticked to his principle to give a differentiated management and services.

Lee's passion and love in stones made him walk a single path since he was young. He accumulated his knowledge and knowhow in stonemasonry as time went by and created many great works. As a result, he has won numerous prizes including an excellent prize at 'The 43th South Chungcheong Province Art Competition' in the sculpture category and National Craftsman's Competition'. He also participated in many exhibitions including 'The 14th Regular Exhibition of The Institute of Stone Sculpture of Korea, Cultural Asset Craftsman Exhibition, Korean Alphabet Art Exhibition, and Ongoong Art Exhibition. However, one of his great feats is that he made, with a renowned Japanese stone company Taeyang Mulsan, a 7m high (15m in total including the pedestal) Buddhist statue in the cemetery park. He also created a 7m statue (14m with the pedestal) at Guhansa Temple in Daejeon. Lee says “I particularly paid a great attention to detail to the latter work (14 meter one) by carving Palgeumgang-yeoksa on the pedestal, Palbushinsang on the back of the statue, Palsangdo below, Bijeonsang on both sides and Sipijishin on the stylobate of the statue in order to enhance esthetic values.”

As one of the master stonemasons, Lee tried hard to improve the public recognition on the profession which was regarded as a 3D (dirty, dangerous and demeaning) job. For this, Lee turned his company into a corporation in 1989 and has run the company in accordance with the Labor Standards Act. He was really regretful that most stonemasons overworked almost every day including weekend shifts yet they hardly got by. To improve these harsh working conditions, Lee set up a system of 8 to 5 cycle with additional payment when working a night shift but weekends and holidays off throughout the year regardless the number of orders. Lee says "It normally takes 4 to 5 years for a person to learn the skills and make them your own. This means that you need persistence and endurance as well as love and passion in the job basically. But the fruit is great at the end and I, as CEO, always do my best to provide the best working conditions to grow together." Lee added "I've worked a single path in stonemasonry for the last 43 years. Strange to say but the more I age the more energy and passion arise from my deep heart. I will keep producing quality and esthetic products and I hope that I can take a part in raising national competitiveness through a steady increase of our export volume."
