세상을 따뜻하게 감싸는 희망의 불을 밝히다

‘한 개의 촛불로서 많은 초에 불을 붙여도 처음 촛불의 빛은 약해지지 않는다’라는 말이 있다. 인생의 어느 순간에 이르면 우리는 자신의 삶을 환하게 비춰주는 ‘행복’이라는 이름의 촛불을 하나 갖게 된다. 그리고 이 빛은 나누면 나눌수록 더욱 세상을 환하게 비추는 희망이 된다. 

봉사의 참의미를 전파하다
봉사의 의미는 남을 도움으로써 자기 스스로를 돕는 데 있다. 다른 이들을 도움으로써 자기 자신을 뒤돌아볼 수 있게 되며, 이것이 개개인에게 그리고 사회 구성원들에게 전해지며 진정한 행복을 전파하게 되는 것이다. 이러한 봉사의 참의미를 전파하며 열성적인 활동으로 사회 곳곳에 따스한 희망의 메시지를 건네고 있는 이가 있다. 바로 제주 한미모로타리클럽 이희숙 회장이다.

지난 6월 16일 제주 한미모로타리클럽의 제13대 회장으로 취임한 이희숙 회장은 지난 반년 간 주변의 소외되고 불우한 이웃을 위한 봉사활동과 인재육성인 장학사업, 질병예방캠페인 등 지역사회의 건강한 발전을 도모하기 위한 다양한 활동을 이끌어 왔다. 2003년 한미모클럽의 창립 멤버로서 초대 수석부회장을 역임했으며 지난 제12대 수석부회장으로 활동하기도 했던 이 회장은 “아름다운 나눔을 실천함으로써 주변의 모든 이웃이 행복한 삶을 영위하게 되는 것을 최고의 가치로 삼고 전 회원이 열심히 활동하고 있습니다”라고 밝혔다.

39명의 회원으로 구성된 제주 한미모클럽은 창립 이래 지금까지 약 250회 이상의 봉사활동을 펼치며 지역사회 발전에 헌신해 왔다. 지난 8월 8일과 11월 29일에는 한국에이즈퇴치연맹 및 보건소 관련 공무원, 민간단체 자원봉사자들과 함께 ‘편견과 차별 없는, 함께 사는 세상을!’이라는 슬로건을 내걸고, 에이즈예방 홍보책자와 물품 등을 시민과 관광객들에게 전달하는 캠페인을 진행했다.

또한 9월 13일에는 신장 장애를 앓고 있는 환자들을 돕기 위한 ‘2015년 새생명 나누기 사랑의 장기기증’ 캠페인을 펼쳤다. 이 회장은 “한 해 2만여명이 넘는 환자들이 장기기증을 기다리고 있지만, 실제로 혜택을 받을 수 있는 이는 450여명에 지나지 않죠. 저희는 제주도민들의 적극적인 참여를 유도하고, 사랑을 실천하는 장기기증문화를 확산하기 위해 적극적인 참여와 활동을 펼치고 있어요”라고 설명했다. 또한 뇌사시 한 사람의 장기기증으로 9명의 생명을 살리게 되고, 사후 안구기증으로 2명의 환우가 앞을 볼 수 있으며, 인체조직 기증으로 최대 100명의 환우가 생명을 유지하고 삶이 향상된다고 덧붙였다.

그 밖에도 제주 한미모클럽 회원들은 제주시 월평동에 위치한 노인전문요양시설 혜주원을 매월 셋째주 수요일마다 방문해 이·미용 봉사를 펼치고 있으며, 내년 2월중에는 다문화가정을 위한 여행 보내주기 프로그램이, 2월 12일 클럽 창립 14주년을 맞이해서는 도내 장학생들에게 클럽장학금을 지급할 예정이며, 문화활동으로서는 지난 11월에 소프라노 오능희 회원이 재능기부로 장학금마련을 위한 독창회를 열었으며, 얻은 수익금 전액을 장학금으로 지급할 예정이다. 또한 제주 늘푸른 음악회와 봉사파트너 협약을 하고 지난달 12월 5일에는 창작음학회를 서울 KBS홀에서 주관하여 문화와 예술을 통한 소통의 창구를 마련하기도 했다.

모두가 함께 행복한 사회를 위해
이희숙 회장은 제주 한미모클럽에서의 열성적인 활동 외에도 지난 7년간 교회 초등부 교사를 맡아 청소년 교육에도 앞장서는 등 크고 작은 봉사를 꾸준히 이어 오고 있다. 그가 이처럼 지역사회를 위한 활동에 헌신하고 있는 까닭은 ‘봉사’야말로 사회를 보다 아름답고 따뜻하게 변화시킬 수 있는, 느리지만 강한 힘이라고 믿고 있기 때문이다. 이 회장은 “과거 경제적으로 어려웠던 시기와는 달리 지금 우리나라는 세계적인 경제 대국을 향해 나아가고 있습니다. 하지만 갈수록 경쟁이 치열해지고 정신적인 만족감이 떨어지면서 왕따나 자살, 폭력 등의 사회 문제가 급증하고 있고, 국민들의 불안감 또한 심각해지고 있습니다. 정신적인 공허함과 자존감의 부재 등에서 초래된 이러한 문제를 해결할 수 있는 방법은 사람을 소중히 여기는 것, 그 마음이 행동으로 나타나는 것이 바로 봉사라고 생각합니다”라고 전했다.

그의 이러한 생각은 기독교정신에 입각한 국내 최고의 토종 네트워크마케팅 기업인 애터미(Atomy)와의 인연으로도 이어지고 있다. 100% 국내 자본으로 출발해 새로운 네트워크마케팅의 장을 연 애터미는 연 40~50%의 놀라운 고속성장을 거듭하며 현재는 글로벌 시장 공략을 노리며 진출하는 대한민국 대표 네트워크마케팅 그룹으로 자리매김하고 있다.

평생을 봉사에 매진한 오드리 햅번은 죽기 전 아들에게 “네가 더 나이가 들면 손이 두 개라는 걸 발견하게 된다. 한 손은 너 자신을 돕는 손이고, 다른 한 손은 다른 사람을 돕는 손이다”라는 시를 들려줬다고 한다. 앞서 설명했듯 ‘봉사’란 남을 돕는 일인 동시에 자기 자신을 돕는 일이다. 이희숙 회장은 봉사를 통해 우리 사회가 더 나은 방향으로 나아가기 위한 가치를 전하고자 한다. 모두가 함께 행복해지는 사회를 꿈꾸는 그의 손길이 세상을 따스하게 감싸는 또 하나의 촛불이 되기를, 이 사회에 꼭 필요한 사람이 되기를 기대한다.

Spreading the true meaning of service
The meaning of service is to help oneself by helping others. You can look at yourself and spread your kindheart to the world by serving others. There are many of these virtuous people but Power Korea particularly would like to introduce Chairwoman Lee Hee-sook of Jeju Hanmimo Rotary Club for this month issue. Lee was inaugurated as the 13th chairwoman of the club on 16 June last year and has exerted her unsparing effort in helping people in need through various social contributions. She was a founding member of the club (2003) and served as the first vice chairwoman in the 12th term of the club. Lee says "I and all the 39 members of the club are happy and willing to help others in the hope of creating a better society and world." Since the establishment, the club has provided more than 250 times of services for regional development. Under the slogan 'No Prejudice and Discrimination but Let's Live Together', the club, with the Korea Federation for HIV/AIDS Prevention, the Health Center, and private volunteers, carried out a campaign on 11 August and 29 November to raise awareness on HIV by giving out publicity booklets and gifts to the public. On 13 September, the club held another campaign called '2015 Lovely Organ Donation' to help those who are in need of them. Lee says "More than annual 20,000 patients are waiting for an organ to arrive and only 450 get benefits. That's why we encourage people to participate by letting them know that one person with brain death can save 9 people, two eyes can make two people to see again and internal organs in particular save 100 people." The club visits Haejuwon (elderly nursing home) in Wolpyeong-dong on Wednesday every third week of the month to provide esthetic services. The club is planning to run free travel programmes for multi-cultural families from February next year and to award a scholarship on the occasion of the 14th anniversary on 12 February. A member soprano Oh Neung-hee of the club gave a performance in November last year and the all the profits will go to scholarship. The club signed an agreement with Jeju Evergreen Concert to provide social services and held Creative Concert on 5th last month at Seoul KBS Hall.

Creating a better society for all
Apart from the club activities, Lee has been serving as an elementary student teacher at her church for 7 years as part of her services. The reason she is actively doing these good deeds is because she believes that service probably is the most powerful tool to make our world nice and happy no matter how long the effort will take into effect. Lee says "Korea now has become one of big economies in the world. But more people are suffering from competition, bullying, violence and depression that leads to even suicide. My solution to this is to respect and serve others." Lee also is working with Atomy, Korea's first network marketing company built on christianity. It started with 100% domestic share and showed a 40 to 50% growth rate and is becoming a representative Korean network marketing company. Lee is Atomy's royal leaders club member and says that Atomy's selling absolute quality products at absolute prices and equal share of profits have brought the company a great success. Lee continues "There are two principles in distribution industry: consumers look for good products and cheap products at the same time. Atomy provides good products at the cheapest price." Atomy has built an image of social enterprise through various activities and it is currently running branches in the US, Canada, Japan, Taiwan and Singapore and is planning to run in the Philippines, Malaysia, Thailand and Vietnam from this month. Lee says "Atomy focuses on improving public recognition on network marketing and I'm proud of it. I would like to share this success with many people." Audrey Hepburn said to her son before she died "As you grow older, you will discover that you have two hands, one for helping yourself, the other for helping others." Power Korea wishes Lee and Jeju Hanmimo Rotary Club a prosperous 2016.
