Promoting fashion tattooists and beauticians for co-growth
Winning '2015 Korea Culture Management Awards'

KFTA fosters both tattooists and beauticians

There are some people especially older generation who still give an unagreeable eye to tattoo due to a misconception and strong confucian value against it. Nevertheless, it is becoming a part of fashion and art among young people with which they express their personality despite the current law that defines tattooists with no medical license as illegal in Korea. However, there has been a continuous effort among tattooists to make it legal and KFTA shows a strong presence in integrating various related organizations. KFTA started to operate as an affiliated organization of Korea Beauty Association from July last year. President Lim Bo-ran has exerted her utmost effort in working together with Jinsung Tattooists (traditional master tattooists) and beauticians as well as issuing qualifications, providing training and fostering talented people. Im says "I can say that although tattoo industry in Korea has just started I'm highly expecting that it will be a desirable job in near future."

Active cooperation with Gumi University and signing an exchange agreement with China to establish Korea Federation for Beauty Industry Division

There are many things to consider when legalizing tattoo industry as it involves using pigments into the skin of human body. Respect and cooperation between traditional master tattooists (art tattoo) and fashion tattooists (fashion tattoo) are also important in order to develop the overall industry. Soonjae Lee, KFTA's Head of Training, says "I think the existing tattooists need a good public recognition and we, as fashion tattooists, can give unsparing support to make an agreeable public recognition for them. It means that we can make tattooing legal by working together and overcoming personal interests." KFTA currently is running various courses such as One Month Fashion Tattoo, General Artists and Startup Support as well as holding seminars and training 2 to 3 times a month (1 to 30 attendees) for its more than 1,000 members. It is also planning to establish Korea Federation for Beauty Industry Division (tentative) in cooperation with China which is about to introduce a national certification test for tattooists. Meanwhile, President Im recently signed an industry-academic cooperation with Gumi University to foster talented people.

KFTA wins 2015 Korea Culture Management Awards
Im, "We need a foundation for both tattooists and beauticians for co-growth"

President Lim and the members of KFTA have provided their utmost effort in legalizing tattoo industry and participated in various beauty competitions in the hope of establishing a general federation. Choi Da-hee, KFTA's Head of PR, says "We have to carry out a national test 4 times for 4 years in order to register a certificate to Human Resources Development Service of Korea. To do this, we need a general federation which can regulate the standards for the test in statistics, theory and practice." Kim Soo-young, KFTA's Committee Member of RP, also says "Surprisingly, make-up became a part of national certificates only a few years ago despite its long history for the test that can goes back to the 60s. More interestingly, nail artists must have a hair stylist certificate to open a nail shop until a recent date." This means that establishing a general federation for tattooists is urgent to make it legalized in a shorter period of time. Meanwhile, KFTA has been chosen as job experience mentor for middle and high school students in Eunpyeong District, Seoul, where the association is located. And the members therefore are about to provide lectures under the theme of 'Tattoo as Culture and Fashion' from this month. Thanks to its contribution, KFTA received 2015 Korea Culture Management Awards in the tattoo development category held at the Korea Press Center, Seoul on 30 last month. President Lim concluded "I, the management team and 1,000 members of KFTA want to work and grow together with master tattooists and beauticians through active exchange and cooperation and we will do our best to bring integration and development of the Korean tattoo and beauty industry." Power Korea wishes Im and KFTA good results in 2016.
