한국식 영어 교육의 한계 보완하기 위한 노력

평촌 학원가에서 지난 3년 여간 명문학원으로 명성을 떨치며 초고속 성장을 이뤄낸 제임스M어학원의 문기준 대표원장 스스로도 한국식 영어교육의 한계 때문에 고생을 한 경험이 있다. 고등학교를 졸업하고 미국으로 유학을 떠났을 때 그 역시 제대로 된 대화를 한마디도 할 수 없었다. 다급한 마음에 그때까지 한국에서 해왔던 영어 공부 방법의 문제점이 무엇인지, 어떻게 공부해야 정말 영어를 잘 할 수 있을 지 고민하기 시작했다. 그가 찾은 해답은 그러나 의외로 간단했다. 언어는 '학습'의 대상이 아니라 '습득'의 대상이라는 사실. 즉, 자전거 타기나 스키 타기를 배우는 것과 마찬가지로 반복 설명을 듣기보다 많이 넘어지더라도 스스로 해보면서 체득하는 것이 중요하다는 것을 말이다. 그래서 그는 유학생활 초기 매일 작문을 했다. 그리고 내일 당장 써먹을만한 말을 한 문장씩 만들어 외운 결과를 놀라왔다. 몇 개월이 채 지나지 않아 상당한 수준의 대화를 자유롭게 할 수 있게 된 것이다. 그렇다. 지금까지의 이야기는 아마 너무 많이 들어본 진부한 내용일 것이다. 그러나 우리는 영어를 가르치는 사람들이다. 식상한 말이라고 화제를 돌려서는 안 된다. 위와 같은 방법이 정답이라는 데 동의한다면 우리는 이제 그 방법을 찾아야 한다. 한국에서 영어를 배우는 우리 아이들이 스스로 넘어지고 스스로 일어서게 하는 방법, 아이들이 스스로 영어를 말할 수 있게끔 하는 방법, 그리고 그것을 잡아주고 교정해줄 수 있는 효과적이면서도 구체적인 방법을 말이다.

제임스M어학원을 오픈하기 전에 문기준 대표도 당연히 다른 학원에서 월급을 받는 강사였다. 처음 영어강사를 시작할 때부터 "정말 잘 가르치고 싶다"는 마음이 간절했던 그는 변두리의 학원들을 피하고 국내 사교육의 1번지라고 할 수 있는 대치동, 목동, 중계동에서 특히 잘 가르친다고 소문난 학원들만 기웃거렸다. 영어를 가르치는 데 좀 더 효과적인 방법들을 배우고 싶었기 때문이다. 그러나 가끔씩 더 좋은 교수법을 연구하기 보다 더 현란한 광고 문구를 만들기 위해 밤을 새는 사람들, 학생들의 실질적인 실력향상 보다 강사 자신의 단기적인 인기몰이에 급급한 사람들을 만날 때면 회의를 느끼기도 했다. 그러나 그럴 때일수록, "언어는 인간의 선천적인 능력이다. 교육자는 이 선천적인 능력을 끌어내 더 크게 키워내는 일을 하는 사람"이라는 생각을 거듭하고, 나의 승부수는 오직 "더 잘 가르치는 것"에 있다고 다짐하며 밤을 새워가며 다음 날 수업을 준비했다. 그 결과 대치동, 목동, 중계동에서 모두 강의평가 1위라는 진기록도 세울 수 있었다. 그러나 꼭 속칭 일타강사이기 때문이 아니라, 그렇게 그의 진심을 알아주는 학생들과 학부형들에게 고마웠고, 그것이 지금까지 그를 달리게 하는 동력이 되어주고 있다.

노력의 결실, 제임스M어학원

언어 교육에 있어 지금까지의 연구는 너무 어린 아이들에게만 집중되어 있었다. 그 결과물은 실로 대단하다 할지라도, 청소년기 학생들을 대상으로 한 외국어 교육의 구체적인 이론과 방법론이 부실하다는 점은 여전히 아쉬움으로 남는다. 문기준 대표는 이 부분에 대해 나름대로 방법을 찾았다고 자부한다. 자신 스스로가 뒤늦은 유학생활을 하면서 영어를 터득했기 때문에 가능한 일일 것이다. 유학생활 초기, 외국인 앞에서 말문이 열리지 않았던 이유는 하고 싶은 말이 없었던 것도, 단어가 생각나지 않았던 것도 아님을 그는 똑똑히 기억한다. 그가 말을 할 수 없었던 이유는 오직 하고 싶은 말과 단어들이 '문장'으로 엮이지 않았기 때문이었다. 그래서 그는 '쓰기', 특히 한 문장 한 문장을 정확하게 쓰는 '작문'수업에 포인트를 맞춘 커리큘럼을 개발했다. 그리고 그 효과를 배가하기 위해 작문수업과 문법수업을 연동하는 시스템을 구축해왔다. 그렇게 더 좋은 커리큘럼과 시스템을 만들고 또 개선하기 위해 십 년이 넘는 시간 동안 밤을 새어온 노력의 산물이 제임스M어학원이다. 지금도 그는 현란한 광고보다 더 좋은 교수법을 개발하기 위해 투자를 아까지 않고 있다. 교육이란, 학습자의 선천적인 능력과 가능성을 찾아내 키워주는 일이라는 그의 믿음에 변함이 없기 때문이다.

Improving Korea's English education

CEO Kijun Moon of James M. has exerted his utmost effort to make his language school to be one of the best in Pyeongchon for more than 3 years. He also was one of many who questioned the Korea's English education system as he could not say a single word when he went to the U.S. to study. He was much alarmed and started to find the problems and solutions. And the answer he found was rather simple: language is the subject not to be learned but to be acquired. With this enlightenment, Moon started to make a practical sentence every day for the use in reality. The result was quite amazing: Moon could be able to engage in a talk with natives within a few months. The story might sound familiar to you but the Korea's English education system still lacks in these basics. With this philosophy in mind, Moon passionately put it in practice and he ranked himself No.1 at classroom assessments in all three areas he worked and was highly praised by both students and their parents.

There have been many researches on language education for children and numerous related teaching methods and materials are currently on the market. However, the efforts for middle and high school students have rather been neglected especially when it comes to detailed educational theory and methods. The good news is that Moon is well aware of this. He points out that the reason he could not say a word in the U.S. was not because he did not have anything to say or forgot the words he was about to let it out. It was simply because he did not know how to lead the words and his intention into a sentence. Moon thus made his unique writing method that encourages students to write each sentence they want to express in words. Moon developed and has been improving the curriculum which efficiently links English grammar within writing in order for students to maximize their English acquisition. CEO Moon has continuously invested in finding the better teaching methods for more than 10 years and James M. is the very result of this effort. He still believes what we should do as educators is not searching flowery words to cover ourselves, but searching the ways to foster students better.
