과자 봉지, 파우치에 포장된 약, 그리고 낱개 포장된 제품들은 산업용 나이프의 커팅 과정을 거쳐 간다. 공정의 최종 과정이자 제품의 외관 품질을 결정하는 절단 공정의 품질은 이 특수한 나이프들이 보증한다. 모든 산업 현장의 주인공인 산업용 나이프를 해외에 수출하는 기업, 독보적인 기술연구로 유명한 하동기공(주)의 김영희 대표를 만나 보았다. 

제조선진국의 기술을 따라잡을 산업용 특수나이프로 세계 기업에 인기
분쇄와 절단 산업은 포장 산업과 더불어 제조산업의 근간을 이룬다. 수입산이 대부분이던 산업용 나이프 시장에 도전한 대구의 하동기공(주)는 21년의 역사를 자랑하는 순수 국내 기술력의 제조회사다. 하동기공(주)의 김영희 대표는 세무회계 및 경영을 담당하며, 공학을 전공한 남편과 함께 나이프 산업에 뛰어들어 기계의 가장 정밀한 부속인 산업용 사각나이프, 원형나이프, 분쇄기 나이프, 슬리팅 나이프 등을 제작하고 있다. “제조업에는 부직포, 섬유, 필름, 고무, 제지 등을 자르는 공정이 있다. 종목은 식품 및 의료, 낱개 포장되어 출고되는 모든 상품이라면 다 해당된다. 그래서 산업용 나이프는 제품을 만드는 산업현장에 반드시 마지막 공정을 담당한다.

반듯하게 자르는 것, 식품을 잘게 다지는 것도 요즘은 기계공정으로 하기 때문에 나이프의 품질이 중요하다. 그리고 과자 봉지의 지그재그 모서리도 모두 산업용 나이프로 자르는 것이다” 여성경제인 대구경북지회원인 김 대표는 회계를 담당하며 제작 공정을 꼼꼼히 익혔으며, 5년 전부터는 직접 경영에 나서게 되었다고 한다. 나이프는 생산과 출고를 거치는 공장을 가진 모든 기업의 필수품이기 때문에, 국내에서는 중견기업과 대기업을 거래처로 두고 있고 미국, 아시아, 유럽에 제품을 수출하고 있다. 하동기공(주)는 창업 이래 신소재 개발로 치수, 날의 각도 등을 연구해 더욱 정교한 제품으로 업그레이드해가고 있는데, 해외 기술을 적극적으로 받아들이고 제품을 개량한 결과 기존 제품의 단점을 개선해 인기가 높다.

“나이프에 많이 쓰이는 재질인 초경은 손상이 잦은 편이다. 그래서 여기에 특수강(하이스)을 결합해 만든 특수 나이프는 가격대비 높은 성능으로 유명하다. 산업용 나이프 분야는 보통 1,2차 제조산업에서 흔히 그렇듯 의뢰받은 대로만 제작하는 분야와 달리 창업해서 금방 수준에 도달하기 쉽지 않다. 그렇게 쌓인 노하우로 의뢰 기업의 요구를 반영해 어떤 나이프든 자체 제작할 기술력을 지녔다는 것이 우리의 경쟁비결이다” 지난 20년 간 사업수익을 제품 연구개발에 꾸준히 투자한 만큼 세계적으로 유명한 주방/산업나이프 제조선진국인 독일, 일본에 비해도 크게 뒤지지 않는 기술 수준에 도달했다는 것이 김 대표의 설명이다. 종이, 비닐, 목재, 식품에 이르기까지 제과나 기계 회사들의 목적에 맞는 500여 종의 나이프를 제작할 수 있다고 한다. 또 나이프의 소재도 중요하지만 제작할 때는 절단하는 각도, 간격의 숙련기술도 중요하다. 오랜 경력자들로 이뤄진 하동기공(주)의 직원들은 ‘눈 감고도’ 칼날을 세우는 장인 수준이라고 한다.

가정과 회사 생활을 병행하는 김 대표는 “지금까지 얼마나 우수한 나이프를 만드는지 홍보하기보다는 제품의 내실을 기하는데 집중한 편이다. 여성 CEO로서 기업을 하기에 힘든 부분이 있는 것도 사실이지만, 당당하게 경영 일선에서 활약하는 동료 기업인들을 많이 볼 수 있다. 대통령 해외순방에 참여하고 해외 현장을 직접 확인하는 여성 기업인도 많이 나왔으면 한다” 고 전하며 성별에 구애받지 않는 경쟁력을 강조하기도 했다. 앞으로도 산업용 나이프라는 한 우물을 파며 특수한 아이템에서도 한국 생산제품의 장점을 알리고 싶다는 김 대표는 올해부터 해외 시장을 집중 공략할 생각이다. 오로지 제품 성능 개선을 위해 기술로 승부를 걸어 온 지난 20여 년, 특수한 목적과 제품의 특성에 적합한 맞춤형 제작 기술을 보유한 점에서 기업인으로서 자부심을 느낀다는 김 대표의 2016년 포부대로 하동기공(주)의 산업용 나이프들이 앞으로도 세계 기업들의 폭넓은 사랑을 받게 되길 바란다.

Specially made industrial knives draw a great attention from the world
Grinding, cutting and packaging industries are the backbone of manufacturing industry. Regretfully though industrial knives, used for cutting, were all imported from overseas until Hadong Machine Tools started to challenge the field with innovative domestic technology. This Korean company actually boasts 21 years of history in the field. CEO Kim Young-hee, with his husband majored in engineering, jumped into the field and has produced various precision knives in square, circular, grinding and slitting. Kim says "Manufacturing involves a process of cutting materials such as nonwoven, film, rubber and paper. Industrial knives, for this reason, plays a crucial role to make manufacturing possible especially in its final stage. Cutting food also is actually a part of mechanical process and the quality of the knives for this reason is regarded as very important. You might be surprised if you know the fact that the zig-zaggy sealed snack bags are also cut by these industrial knives." Kim started as an accountant of the company but soon learned about the manufacturing process and eventually involved herself in management 5 years ago.

Hadong Machine Tools currently is working in partnership with SMEs and major companies in Korea and is exporting the products to the US, Asia and Europe. The company is continuously upgrading the quality of products especially in size and angle by adapting advanced technologies. Kim says "Sintered carbide commonly used for knives has a drawback of being damaged easily. So we added high speed steel and it shows a great performance against its price. Making quality knives requires time, experience and knowhow and we have gone through all of these and have a unique technology and that is our competitiveness." Kim has invested a part of the company profits in R&D for the last 20 years in order to develop world class knives that can compare with knives made in Germany and Japan.

Kim explains that Hadong Machine Tools can make 500 kinds of knives customized for cutting various materials such as paper, vinyl, wood and food, ect. From choosing materials to adjusting angles and distance, experts of Hadong Machine Tools can erect a blade even with their eyes closed according to Kim. She says "We put our top priority on quality. You might wonder how come, as a woman CEO, I could landed in this job which is normally regarded as man's, but I'm telling you that it is rather not necessary to be conventional to spread one's aptitude and ability whether you are a man or woman. I actually hope to see more of women CEOs." Meanwhile, Kim has set up a goal for 2016: to expand overseas market with more ungraded quality Korean made knives.
