건축디자인의 새로운 패러다임, 3D 건축디자인

한 도시와 지역, 나라의 이미지를 결정짓는 요소는 무엇일까. 맛있는 음식이나 고유의 문화도 손꼽을 수 있겠지만, 역시 가장 강한 인상으로 남는 것은 바로 ‘건축’이다. 개성 없이 늘어서서 높이만을 자랑하는 빌딩 숲이 아닌, 저마다의 개성 있고 독특한 디자인을 갖춘 건축물들은 도시의 랜드마크가 되기도 하며, 그 자체로 하나의 ‘문화’가 된다. 건축을 빛나게 만드는 것은 바로 ‘디자인(Design)’인 것이다.

3D 영상시뮬레이션, 건축을 들여다보다
‘건축’의 의미는 시대와 환경에 따라 크게 변화되어 왔다. 특히 미적인 아름다움과 기능적인 실용성을 함께 갖춘 공간을 구현하기 위한 ‘건축디자인’은 최근 크게 주목받고 있는 분야이다. 이미 유럽 등의 선진국에서는 수십 년 전부터 건축디자인의 중요성이 부각되어 왔으며, 실제로 건축디자인이 먼저 진행되고 설계는 세부적인 요소를 채워나가는 방향으로 건축이 이뤄지고 있는 상황. 이러한 기반 아래에서 성장한 유명 건축디자이너들은 전 세계의 건축디자인 의뢰를 도맡으며 명성을 쌓아가고 있기도 하다.

이에 건축디자인 전문그룹 ‘신우건축디자인스튜디오’의 신우 소장은 대한민국 건축디자인의 선진화와 세계화를 추구하며, 주변 경관과 잘 어우러지면서도 독특하고 개성 있는 디자인, 사용자의 동선과 라이프스타일을 고려한 편안하고 안락한 디자인을 구현하고자 노력해왔다. 특히 최근에는 새로운 건축설계 방식인 ‘3D 건축디자인’을 자체적으로 연구·개발하고 디자인에 도입함으로써 ‘클라이언트와 디자이너의 생각이 보다 효과적으로 구현된 건축디자인 설계’의 새 지평을 열며 높은 관심과 호응을 얻고 있다. 보다 나은 건축디자인을 구현하고자 하는 고민에서 탄생한 ‘3D 건축디자인’은 기존의 2D기반 건축디자인(CAD, 포토샵)에서 벗어나 클라이언트의 구상과 비전을 3D 시뮬레이션 디자인 영상에 구현함으로써 시각적이고 직관적이며, 기간 단축과 비용절감의 효과도 함께 누릴 수 있다는 강점을 가지고 있다. 신우 소장은 “건축물의 밸류를 결정하는 것은 디자인이라고 생각합니다. 저희는 그 디자인을 총제적인 3D 영상시뮬레이션 안에 리얼하게 구현함으로써 한 차원 높은 건축디자인을 추구하고자 합니다. 특히 건축물디자인, 인테리어디자인, 조경디자인, 경관조명디자인, 주변광역디자인을 모두 아우를 수 있는 ‘마스터플랜 디자인’을 통해 지리조건과 주변환경, 건축물 간의 상호작용을 극대화시키는 데에도 매진하고 있습니다”라고 밝혔다.

사실 지금까지의 ‘CAD 중심’의 건축설계에는 분명 한계가 존재해 왔다. 복잡한 2D 도면을 클라이언트가 이해하기도 힘들 뿐더러 주변 환경에 대한 고려가 부족한 것이 일반적이고, 작업시간도 3~4개월 이상 소요되기 때문이다. 신 소장은 “저희는 설계의뢰 후 개념디자인 영상 제작까지 약 40~50일이면 가능합니다. 작업시간이 빠르기 때문에 클라이언트는 충분한 여유를 가지고 전문 건축디자이너와 전체적인 디자인을 조율해나갈 수 있습니다. 또한 독특하고 개성 있는 디자인의 건축설계를 3D 영상으로 직접 볼 수 있기 때문에 클라이언트의 만족도 또한 높은 편입니다”라고 설명했다. 이처럼 클라이언트와의 조율을 통해 확정된 디자인은 다시 실사 디자인으로 작업되어 디테일한 부분을 채우게 되며, 이 결과물이 설계사무소의 설계 의뢰를 거쳐 사업설명회에 이르기까지는 대략 3개월 정도가 소요된다고 한다. 기존에 6~7개월 걸리는 것에 비해 기간은 절반으로 단축된 것이며, 그 과정에서의 비용규모도 20~30% 이상 절감이 가능하다.

창의적이고 개성 있는 건축디자인 추구해야
이러한 3D 영상시뮬레이션은 건축과정 뿐 아니라 클라이언트의 사업진행에 있어서도 보다 효과적인 도구로써 활용된다. 대단위 주택단지나 세컨하우스, 레저타운 등의 프로젝트는 사업과정에서의 투자유치나 분양이 필수적이다. 이때 실감나는 영상과 함께 디테일한 구조 등을 파악할 수 있는 3D 디자인 영상은 투자자들의 빠른 이해를 도울 수 있으며, 디자인과 기능성 면에서 강점을 확실하게 부각시킬 수 있다는 점에서 기존의 조감도 등과 비교해 훨씬 효과적이다. 단순히 설계도면을 3D 영상물로 제작하는 것이 아닌 실제 설계와 건축디자인, 영상제작, 3D 프로그램 등 다양한 기술이 총망라되어 있기 때문에 그 진입장벽이 상당히 높다는 것이 그 이유이다. 또한 신우건축디자인스튜디오에서는 3D 영상시뮬레이션 제작 과정에서 사용되는 6~7개의 각기 다른 프로그램들이 서로 충돌 없이 원활히 연동될 수 있도록 자체적인 노하우와 기술을 개발해 독보적인 경쟁력을 구축하고 있다. 신 소장은 “저희 디자인스튜디오에는 미대 회화과, 조소과, 인테리어디자인, 건축설계, 조경디자인, 영상편집디자인, 그래픽디자인, 3D 프로그래밍 등 다양한 분야의 전문 인재들이 포진되어 있습니다. 분야가 다양한 만큼 개성 있고 창의적인 아이디어가 창출되며 시너지 효과를 일으키고 있습니다”라고 전했다. 하지만 다양한 분야가 서로 융합응용되어야 하는 만큼 그에 알맞은 인재를 구하는 것도 쉬운 일이 아니다. 기존의 프로세스와 시스템이 오랫동안 업계에 고착되어 왔기에 전혀 새로운 분야에 도전하기 위한 기술이나 응용력이 축적되지 못한 탓이다. 신 소장은 “마스터플랜 3D 디자인은 클라이언트뿐만 아니라 건축디자인 업계에서도 생소한 분야입니다. 시장이 더욱 커지고 발전하기 위해선 저희뿐만 아니라 많은 업체가 함께 참여하고 공조하는 산업생태계가 구축되어야 합니다. 저희는 특화된 전문 인재를 육성하는 한편, 시장 저변을 확대해가며 보다 많은 이들이 관심을 갖고 동참할 수 있는 여건을 조성하고자 합니다”라고 밝혔다. 

이런 일환으로 그는 내년 후반기까지 마무리되는 프로젝트들을 모아 건축디자인 전시회를 열 계획을 갖고 있다. 건축이 하나의 문화로 자리 잡고, 건축 영상디자인 또한 예술의 한 장르로 인정받기 위한 발판을 직접 쌓아나가고자 하는 것이다. 덧붙여 소장은 훗날 후학들에게 건축디자인에 대한 총체적인 개념을 가르치고 싶다는 포부도 밝혔다. 건축의 자유로움과 아름다움을 추구하는 정신이 대한민국 건축의 발전을 이끄는 힘이 되리라는 것이 그의 생각이다. 건축설계의 새로운 분야를 개척하기 위한 도전을 멈추지 않고 있는 신우 소장. 그의 열정과 노력이 전 세계에 대한민국 건축의 아름다움을 알릴 수 있는 밑거름이 되어주기를 기대한다.

Introducing 3D image simulation in architectural design
The meaning of architecture has been changed through the age and environment. Architectural Design in particular has become very popular in terms of emphasizing building's aesthetic and practical value. Architects in many advanced countries have done the design before the floor plans since decades ago. For this reason, they have been invited from all over the world to execute their unique design. Meanwhile, CEO Shinwoo of Shinwoo Architectural Design Studio has exerted his effort in promoting the Korean architectural design to the world through  harmonious, unique yet practical design that can go well with the surroundings. He recently developed and applied his own '3D Architectural Design' in order to realize the needs and ideas of both designers and clients. Unlike 2D (CAD, Photoshop), the ideas are simulated in 3D imaging. It is intuitive, saves cost and shorten the design period. Shinwoo says "I think the design decides the value of the building. I provide a higher level architectural design by using 3D technology.

Shinwoo's 'Masterplan Design' in particular covers many areas of design including architecture, interior, landscape, lighting and environment." There is a clear limitation in CAD-centered architectural design. The complicated 2D plans are difficult for clients to read, often ignore the surroundings of the building and require 3 to 4 months to complete the design. Shinwoo says "We finish the design from order to 3D image within 40 to 50 days with constant communication with the client. So far our clients have showed great satisfaction to our design process." The confirmed 3D design then goes to detailed floor plans and layout through architectural design office and the final business presentation within 3 months. Compared to the existing 6 to 7 months, it is the half the process with 20 to 30% reduced cost. 

Pursuing creative and unique architectural design
Large scale housing complex, vacation cottage and leisure town need to invite investment and to attract people for parceling out. Presenting the complex and buildings in 3D images, in this case, can also be very effective as it shows real images of the buildings. Shinwoo developed technologies that can smoothly run 6 to 7 different programms without colliding in 3D images and secured its unique status in the field.

Shinwoo says "We boast top specialists whose majors cover from painting, sculpture, interior/architecture/landscape/image editing/graphic design and 3D programming. For this reason, we can provide more diversified and creative ideas that can create synergy effect." Shinwoo also has a great interest in working together with other architectural firms as well as fostering talented manpower. He says "Our 'Masterplan 3D Design' is new even to the industry. For this reason, more and more related firms need to work together. We are also actively fostering talented manpower in the hope of spreading high level technologies in the industry."

As part of the effort, Shinwoo is planning to hold an architectural design exhibition in the hope of promoting architectural design as an important element of culture and art. He will display the projects done by the end of next year in the exhibition. He also wishes to teach students about a comprehensive conception of architectural design in the future. Power Korea hopes that Shinwoo Architectural Design Studio will write a new history in the field.
