아이들의 손끝에서 펼쳐지는 무한한 상상력의 세계

‘눈 덮인 숲 속을 헤매는 주황색 여우 한 마리. 무채색의 빌딩 숲 사이에서 손을 꼭 잡은 소년과 소녀. 기타를 치고 있을 때면 어디선가 나타나는 시크한 고양이.’ 동화책 속에 그려진 세상은 언제나 우리에게 무궁무진한 상상력과 기분 좋은 설렘을 선사한다. 세계 어느 곳의 어린이든지, 심지어는 어른들까지도 그림동화에 매료되고 마는 까닭이 바로 이 때문이다.

그림만으로도 전해지는 아름다운 감동
흔히 ‘회화’는 시대와 국가, 언어와 인종을 뛰어넘어 감동을 전달할 수 있는 수단이라고 말한다. 그러한 회화의 특성을 무엇보다 잘 담아내고 있는 것이 바로 ‘그림동화책’이다. 국내의 경우 스마트폰과 영상교재의 발달로 동화책 시장이 점차 축소되고 있지만, 해외에서 ‘그림동화’는 감성 서적이자 예술 서적의 한 장르로서 자리 잡아 가고 있는 추세다. 특히 재능 있는 그림동화 작가들이 그려내는 기발하고도 독특한 그림들은 감동과 즐거움을 주면서도, 자유로운 상상력을 발휘하게 만들며 아이들은 물론 어른들에게도 큰 사랑을 받고 있다.

지난 11월 20일 개원한 ‘바오밥 그리다 책’ 미술학원에서는 이러한 수입 그림동화를 활용해 아이들이 독특한 색채감과 창의적인 구도를 배우고, 이를 다시 자신만의 색깔로 재창조해나갈 수 있도록 돕고 있다. 먹과 장지를 활용한 동양화에 현대적 표현주의를 접목시킨 독특한 작품세계를 펼쳐온 중견화가이자, 청소년과 성인들을 대상으로 한 미술교육을 18년 넘게 펼쳐온 김청영 원장은 우연한 기회에 수입 그림동화에 매료된 뒤, 이를 활용한 미술교육의 아이디어를 생각하게 됐다고 한다.

“6세에서 초등생까지를 위한 새로운 미술교육 프로그램을 고민하던 중에 우연히 수입 그림동화를 알게 됐어요. 주로 미국이나 프랑스, 스페인, 포르투갈, 인도 등에서 출판하는 책들이죠. 수업에 활용이 가능할지를 알아보러 수입동화 전문서점에 방문했다가 정말 깜짝 놀랐죠. 화가의 시각에서 보기에도 정말 뛰어나면서도 기발한 그림이 많았거든요. 풍부한 이야기와 색감이 자유로운 재료 사용으로 핸드메이드 그림으로 보여주는 그림동화책을 보며 ‘아이들에게 정말 필요한 건 이거다’라는 확신이 들었거든요.”

자유로운 상상력을 마음껏 발휘하다
‘바오밥 그리다 책’의 수업은 먼저 아이들이 원하는 그림동화책을 그림들을 마음껏 보는 것에서 시작한다. 다양한 그림을 제대로 감상할 줄 아는 것이야 말로 가장 효과적인 미술교육이라는 생각에서다. 아이들은 책에 나온 세계적인 그림동화 작가의 그림들을 참고해 그리면서, 그들의 화풍과 색채감각, 구도, 표현방법, 재료를 사용하는 방식을 익히게 된다. 그림에 따라 동양화 분채 느낌과 흡사한 서양화 안료와 아교를 섞기도 하고, 싸인펜과 마카펜만을 이용해 풍경을 그려내기도 한다. 먹선으로 자유로운 필체를 구사하기도 하며, 드로잉도 기존의 틀에 박힌 작업이 아니라 연필의 멋스러움이 묻어나는 스토리가 있는 하나의 작품으로 표현된다. 이처럼 다양한 재료의 사용은 기존의 획일적인 입시미술교육에 길들여져 있던 아이들에게 개성 있는 표현과 상상력을 부여한다. 

“사실 전 세계에서도 우리나라만큼 교육열이 높은 곳은 없을 거에요. 하지만 지나친 교육열은 때론 아이들의 자유로운 상상력과 표현을 저해하는 방향으로 흐르기도 하죠. 전세계의 그림동화를 통한 교육이 이런 문제에 대한 작은 해결책이 될 수 있을 거라 생각해요. 예측가능한 주입식 미술교육이 아닌 자신만의 독특한 컨텐츠 개발을 위한 수업을 목표로 합니다. 선생님들은 어떤 표현엔 어떤 재료가 적합하고, 구도나 공간감을 통해 어떻게 느낌을 줄 수 있는지를 아이들 스스로 찾아낼 수 있도록 서포트하는 데에 교육의 중점을 둘 생각입니다. 그렇게 의도하다보면 사실감 있고 디테일한 표현력은 자연적으로 생기는 자신만의 스킬이 될 수 있는 겁니다.”

300권이 넘는 수입 그림동화책을 바탕으로 보다 체계적인 교육 커리큘럼을 구성하는 데에 매진하고 있는 김 원장은 내년 5월 18일부터 24일까지 제1회 바오밥 그리다 책 단체전을 인사동 가이아갤러리에서 개최한다고 전했다. 이 전시는 바오밥 그리다 책의 6개월 수강과정을 수료한 아이들을 대상으로 무료로 진행할 계획이라고 한다. 

“아이들의 상상력만큼 무한한 가능성을 가진 것은 없어요. 아이들은 상상을 통해 성장하고 꿈을 꾸며, 미래를 바라보니까요. 보다 많은 아이들이 아름다운 그림동화를 보며 화폭에 자신의 꿈을 마음껏 펼쳐낼 수 있는 장이 되었으면 하는 바람입니다.”

Pictures are media to communicate with people over nation, language and race. Children's books in particular contain the characteristics of pictures very well. Although the offline book market is becoming shrunk due to the prevailed smart phone based materials, they are still popular in overseas markets as in the category of art books. Well made children's books can give fun, touching and imagination to readers regardless their ages. Opened on 20 last month, Baobab Greedabook Art Academy uses these well made overseas children's books for children to learn unique colours and creative compositions so that they can create their own colours. Artist and Principal Chungyoung Kim of Baobab Greedabook Art Academy is an artist famous for grafting modern expressionism to oriental paintings as well as providing art education for more than 18 years. She came to know about these imported children's books by chance and was struck with the idea to use them in her art education. She says "I was thinking about new programms for children aged 6 to 12 when I found these overseas children's books mainly from the US, France, Spain, Portugal and India. I was amazed at their creativeness and original ideas realized in rich stories and colours and I thought this was it." 

Demonstrating one's imagination freely
The lessons of Baobab Greedabook starts by children looking at the pictures they want in the books. Kim thinks that good appreciation is closely related to the most effective art education. Children use the pictures books as reference and imitate the style, colours, structures and materials. They then try to mix pigments and glue or sometimes draw landscapes with felt pens, markers, ink and pencil to create their own drawings with unique stories. Considering the typical art education, this method is quite remarkable in terms of promoting children's ability to express their imaginations. Kim says "The zeal for education in Korea is very high. The problem is that it often discourages students' imagination and expression. I think using children's books can be a small solution for the problem in terms of actualizing their ideas. The teachers at Baobab Greedabook, for this reason, help students find their own ways to realize their imagination and eventually make it into their own acquired techniques and styles." Kim currently uses more than 300 imported children's books and working hard to introduce more effective curriculum. Also, she is planning to hold an exhibition in May next year in Insa-dong with the works of children who have finished certain required courses. Kim says "Children's imaginations are limitless. They dream and grow up in imagination. I hope my method of art education will help more children draw their dream on the papers."
