Welding the rough and delicate to make metals smile
Challenging the property of an object to turn abstraction into concreteness
Sculptor Kiwoong Jeong

Connecting the warm hearts of people through welding cold metals
Metals are cold but they require a lot of heats and pressure to make something. Sculptor Kiwoong Jeong is one who can blow his warm breath into the double-sidedness of metals. He combines dynamic & static and rough & smooth elements to express his feeling. He also adds experimental grotesqueness in order to express rough yet delicate details. However, these are the process to complete his goal of connecting the warm hears of people through his works and for this reason he is well received from critics and appreciators as a sculptor who welds humanity. Jeong says “I held my first solo exhibition at Kwanhoon Gallery with the works made of wasted industrial materials and metals. I didn’t know about welding at all but I started to get interested when I heard the noisy sound of welding process and I wanted to express human hearts with that rough process.” Welding is a really hard work to do. Jeong continues “Steel is for arc welding and copper oxyacetylene welding.

Copper is divided into red copper which gets spread and stuck when welding and brass which gets cut. You need a technique to keep the good timing when working with copper plates. Through this process I came know about the property of copper and I created a rough and uneven texture. Some of my works were specially selected at national competitions and appeared on 4 major newspapers and I was sure I can earn a living from my works.” Jeong makes various types of men. He makes a round face with simple and warm elements and delicate and prolonged arms and legs with dynamism. You might also notice that there is heaviness in his works and this is because his parents became displaced people since the Korean War and he grew up by watching Gwangju Democratization Movement in 1980. Nevertheless, Jeong gives more values at positive mind and thanking petty things in life. He says “I try to keep opening my mind and avoiding calculating. That’s why I make my works in which people communicate each other with various expressions and body language.” Jeong emphasized human face in his ‘Ugly’ series and sleek body lines in his other work ‘Companion’ but they are all based on communication. Jeong combines the property of an object with human feeling like an abstract concept being turned into concreteness.

Jeong says “It is really difficult for many artists to compromise art works with reality. In my case, I’m overcoming that harsh reality with the scarcity of my works and my welding technique.” His works are also well received overseas. There is a story that an auctioneer came to Beijing Art Fair and Shanghai Art Fair only to see Jeong’s works. Jeong adds “Since I decided to express my memories like a comfortable record, I delivered many elements such as comics, humanity and wittiness to my works and I’m happy that people like them.” Power Korea is looking forward to seeing more of his works.
