차별화된 음악교육으로 ‘무한한 가능성’을 펼치다

클래식은 깊다. 때로는 격하게 요동치며, 때로는 잔잔한 여운을 남긴다. 수많은 악기들이 한 데 모여 하나의 가슴 벅찬 화음을 만들어내기도 하고, 음과 음 사이의 여백에 머물러 있는 적막과 고요함에 감동을 느끼게도 한다. 끊임없는 변화와 조화가 어우러진 클래식은 그래서 우리의 감정에 더욱 깊이 스며든다.

“음악을 사랑하는 만큼, 큰 행복이 찾아옵니다”
클래식 음악은 언제나 우리에게 감동을 선사한다. 하나의 곡을 알아 가면 알아갈수록 그 감동의 크기와 깊이는 배가 된다. 그러나 많은 대중들에게 클래식 음악은 여전히 ‘어려운 장르’라는 인식이 강하다. 브르노 콘서바토리 학원경영과의 조윤서 교수는 ‘클래식은 이미 우리 삶 가까이에 있으며, 좀 더 편안하게 다가간다면 그 진정한 아름다움을 누구나 느낄 수 있다’고 말한다. 

구리시 교향악단 수석 연주자로서의 활동 경험과 수많은 독주회와 정기연주회, 연세대학교 백주년기념관 독주, University of Washington Meany Hall 연주 등을 통해 뛰어난 바이올리니스트로서의 실력을 인정받아온 조윤서 교수는 평생을 음악과 함께하는 삶을 살아왔다. 유아교육을 전공한 어머니의 영향으로 어려서부터 음악교육을 접한 그는 ‘스즈키 메소드(Suzuki method)’를 통해 일주일에 두 번씩 바이올린 레슨을 받게 된다. 혹독한 연습 스트레스에서 벗어나 자연스럽고 즐겁게 음악을 접할 수 있는 스즈키 메소드 교육법은 조 교수에게 음악을 몸으로 익히고, 좀 더 즐겁게 다가갈 수 있는 자양분이 됐다. 그는 “스즈키 메소드의 가장 큰 차이점은 또래 친구들과의 합주 경험이다. 혼자 연주하는 것이 아닌 상대를 존중하며, 마음을 맞춰나가는 당시의 경험이 이후에도 음악을 배워나가고, 연주하는 데에 큰 도움이 됐다”고 말했다. 당시 그가 가르침을 받았던 황경익 교수(現 한국 스즈키협회 회장)는 지금까지도 그가 음악을 즐기고, 사랑하는 태도를 가질 수 있도록 도와준 큰 스승이다. 주변의 친구들이 하나둘씩 음악을 포기할 때에도 황경익 교수가 머물던 대전까지 수업을 듣기 위해 내려갔던 것은 그에게 있어 음악이 너무나도 즐겁고, 음악과 함께하는 시간이 가장 행복한 시간이었기 때문이다. 그리고 이러한 그의 경험은 현재 브르노 콘서바토리에서의 음악 교육으로 이어지고 있다.

실기와 경영능력 겸비된 전문 음악인 양성
체코 브르노 콘서바토리(Czech Brno Conservatory)는 1919년 설립된 유럽 명문 예술학교이다. 세계적 명성의 ‘야나체크 4중주단’을 보유하고 있으며, 유럽선진예술 노하우의 전파를 위해 세계 각국에 분원을 설립하고 있다. ‘브르노 콘서바토리’는 한국에서 ‘체코 브르노 콘서바토리’와 동일한 교육 커리큘럼을 받고 체코에서 졸업시험을 치룬 후 졸업장을 받는 학교이다. 졸업장과 학위는 아포스티유 협약에 따라 한국에서 모든 권위와 자격이 법적으로 보장되고 있다. 그 중에서도 지난 9월 개설되어 2016년 3월 첫 수업이 시작될 학원경영과(Music Institute Management)는 음악과 문화예술에 대한 이론과 실기, 체계적인 교수법과 학원 경영전략 등을 총체적으로 배울 수 있는 곳이다. 조윤서 교수는 “기존 예술경영학과의 경우 예술과 관련된 다양한 경영수업을 받을 수 있지만, 실제적인 교수법이나 실기는 결여되어 있는 경우가 많다. 우리 학원경영과에서는 커리큘럼에 예술경영과 음악실기를 함께 진행함으로써 음악단체나 학원 운영의 노하우와 함께, 악기 교수법, 악기 조율 및 리페어 실습법 등을 함께 배울 수 있다”고 설명했다. 이러한 교육 프로그램은 음악학원들이 겪고 있는 경영난을 해소하기 위한 경쟁력 강화와 동시에, 취업난에 빠진 음악 전공 학생들에게 다양한 가능성의 기회를 열어줄 수 있다는 점에서 높이 평가받고 있다.

조 교수는 “우리나라에서 공부하는 음악 전공 학생들은 지나치게 음악 실기에만 치우쳐있는 경우가 많다. 대부분의 음악대학 커리큘럼 또한 연주자를 위한 이론과 실기 교육에만 한정되어있는 것이 일반적이다. 하지만 대학 졸업을 준비하다보면 생각했던 것과 현실이 많이 다르다는 것을 깨닫게 된다. 정작 연주자의 길을 걸을 수 있는 사람은 극히 일부에 불과하기 때문”이라고 안타까움을 표했다. 실제로 국내에서 연주자로 활동할 수 있는 곳은 시립교향악단, 사립 오케스트라 등으로 한정되어 있으며, 음대 졸업생의 대부분은 음악교육자로서, 또 일부는 전혀 다른 직종에 종사하고 있는 것이 사실이다. 오랜 시간동안 힘든 연습과정을 거쳐 왔음에도 불구하고, 현실의 높은 벽에 부딪혀 좌절하게 되는 학생들이 너무나 많다는 것이다. 조 교수는 “연주를 능숙하게 잘 하는 것과 학생들을 잘 가르치는 것은 엄연히 다르다. 아무리 뛰어난 연주자라도 자신이 알고 있는 것을 어떻게 전달해야 하는지는 잘 모르고 있는 경우가 많다. 이런 점에서 보다 실질적이고 현실적인 교육이 필요하다고 생각한다”고 말했다.
그가 음악교육학과 예술경영학으로 석박사를 공부하게 된 것도 이 때문이다. 이화여자대학교 음악대학을 졸업한 조 교수는 음악예술경영학 과정을 공부한 뒤, 현재는 이태리에서 예술경영학 박사과정에 매진하고 있다. 그는 “자신의 꿈을 더욱 넓게 펼쳐나가기 위해서라도 학생들 스스로가 다양한 관련 직업을 알아보는 동시에, 만약 음악학원을 운영하게 된다면 효율적인 경영방법은 무엇인지, 레슨할 때 학생들을 어떻게 가르쳐야 하는지에 대한 공부가 필요하다”고 강조했다.

연주와 교육에 대한 깊은 이해를 바탕으로 학생들에게 작게는 학원 경영에서부터 넓게는 음악을 대하는 마인드와 이를 실천해나가는 자세까지 알려주고 싶다는 조윤서 교수. 그가 지금껏 배워왔고, 가르치게 될 ‘음악’이라는 가치가 우리 음악계에 차별화된 전문 음악인 양성의 지침이 되어주기를 기대한다.

"The more you love music, the more happiness you have"
Classical music always moves audience. The more you listen and know the music, its depth and magnitude get doubled. But for many, the music is still regarded as difficult to enjoy. Prof Cho says that classical music is always around us and we just need to relax and listen to beautiful rhythms and melodies. As the top violinist at Guri Philharmonic Orchestra, Cho has held numerous solo and regular concerts including at Yonsei One Hundred Year Memorial Hall and University of Washington Meany Hall. Cho started music under the influence of her music education majored mother. She had violin lessons based on Suzuki Method twice a week which became a really good foundation for her to communicate with music. She says "It was really good for me to play music with my friends and I naturally learn how to respect and work together each other under the instruction of my teacher Gyeongik Hwang (current Prof. Chairman of Korea Suzuki Association). He is a great inspiration for me and I even traveled to Daejeon City to have his lessons while many of my friends gave up music. I felt really happy when playing music." As a result, her passion in music led herself to be a professor at Brno Conservatory today. 

Fostering musicians with musical technique and management skill
Established in 1919, Czech Brno Conservatory is one of renowned art schools in Europe. It has The Janáček Quartet and is running the same conservatory in many countries in the world. It has the same curriculum regardless the location but students need to take graduation examination at Czech Brno Conservatory. All qualifications obtained in Korea is globally recognized based on Apostille Convention. The recent addition of Music Institute Managemen at Brno Conservatory Korea last September is scheduled to start its first lesson in March next year. Students learn music, cultural art theory & practice as well as music teaching methods and music business in the department. Cho says "Many of the existing art management department lack in practical teaching methods and performance. That's why we provide curriculum that covers both management and practical music & education skills so that students can have comprehensive knowledge particularly in the case of running a music academy after graduation." The curriculum is expected to strengthen the competitiveness of music academies and to provide opportunities for students to have various possibilities relating to music. Cho says "Korean musicians tend to focus on practice excessively and most curriculums are also based on music theory and practice. But these two only cannot guarantee them a job as musician after graduation. There are limited places in philharmonics or orchestras and therefore most graduates have to be either lecturer or to find different job for a living." Cho continues "There's a difference between good performance and good teaching as they do not usually go together. It means that a total directional curriculum is needed." That is why Cho studied music education and art management at Ehwa Woman's University School of Music. She is currently taking a PhD in art management in Italy. Cho says "Students need to learn the skills covering all aspect of music and music industry in order to secure a financial stability as a musician." Power Korea hopes that Prof. Cho and Brno Conservatory Korea will contribute to development of Korean music education.
