실사구시형 인재 양성하는 지역사회발전의 ‘Think Tank’
이공계와 비이공계 어우러진 산학협력모델 구현으로 주목

대학교육이 변화하고 있다. 정부는 ‘산학협력선도대학육성사업’을 통해 대학교육이 산업 현장에 알맞은 실무인재를 배출할 수 있도록 유도하는 한편, 기술개발 및 이전, 공용장비 지원 등을 통한 대학과 기업의 상생발전을 추진해왔다. 이에 따라 지난 2012년, 교과부 주관 산학협력선도대학육성사업에 선정된 호남대학교는 체계적인 산학협력을 통한 지역 인재 양성에 박차를 가하는 한편, 한 차원 높은 산학협력 모델을 제시하며 저탄소녹색성장을 선도해왔다.

정부평가 3년 연속 ‘우수’ 등급
‘산학협력선도대학육성사업’은 종전의 산학협력중심대학육성사업, 광역선도산업인재양성사업 그리고 지역거점연구센터지원사업을 통합한 새로운 선도모델을 추구하고 있다. 이에 따라 호남대학교 LINC사업단은 ‘산학협력 친화형 교육인사제도 운영’, ‘산학협력중점교수 채용 확대’ 등 산학협력 친화형 대학체제 개편을 위한 시스템을 구축하고, 맞춤형 교육을 기반으로 ‘현장밀착형 교육과정 개편 및 운영’, ‘현장실습 및 창업교육 확대’ 등 특성화된 산학협력 활성화를 위해 노력해왔다. 

특히 지난 2009년 광주권 대학 중 유일하게 2단계 산학협력중심대학육성사업에 선정되어 일찍부터 대학과 산업체의 협력을 통한 경쟁력 강화와 맞춤형 인재양성에 힘써온 호남대학교는 그간 쌓아온 산학협력의 노하우와 역량을 결집시켜 한 차원 높은 산학협력모델을 제시하고, 대학혁신을 선두에서 이끌고 있다는 평가를 받았다. 

이러한 성과를 바탕으로 호남대 LINC사업단은 사업 실시 첫해인 2012년 ‘최우수’ 등급을 받은데 이어, 1차년도 ‘매우우수’, 1단계 ‘우수’ 평가와 2013년 추경사업실적 평가에서도 ‘우수’ 등급을 획득했다. 최근 실시된 3차년도 평가에서도 ‘우수’등급을 획득한 사업단은 호남·제주권 대학 중 최상위의 명실상부한 산학협력 대표대학의 위상을 재확인했다. 

특히 이번 정부평가에서 사업단은 이공계열 학과에 치우치기 쉬운 산학협력을 대부분의 비이공계 학과까지 확산시켜 전교생이 산업과 대학의 협력효과를 체감하게 한 점과, 대학 연구진이 기업현장에 직접 다가가 기술개선 및 특허출원을 통해 기업이 매출신장을 직접 경험하게 했다는 점에서 높이 평가받았다. 양승학 사업단장은 “저희 호남대 LINC사업단은 대학이 보유하고 있는 핵심역량을 활용하여 지역 산업체를 지원함으로써 산학이 상생할 수 있는 체계를 갖춘 산학협력의 허브 기능을 수행하고자 합니다. 특히 ‘실사구시형 산학협력중심대학’이라는 비전 아래 기존의 대학교육시스템을 연구·교육중심에서 산학협력 친화형으로 개선함으로써 학생들의 취업 미스매치를 해소하고, 취업역량을 키우는 데에 주력하고 있습니다”라고 밝혔다.

아이디어 기술의 제품화로 실질적 성과 창출
대학과 지역산업 간의 산학협력이 점차 강화되어 가는 흐름에서 대학의 역할은 이제 ‘지역사회 발전의 싱크탱크(Think Tank)’가 되어야 한다는 것이 양승학 단장의 생각이다. 긴밀한 협력관계를 토대로 가족회사의 당면 애로사항과 기술혁신을 지원함으로써 기업의 매출신장과 미래성장 가능성을 높여나가는 것이 대학이 해야 할 일이라는 것이다.

이에 따라 사업단에서는 교수임용 및 업적평가제도를 개선해 교수들의 산학협력 활동 활성화를 유도하고, 지역전략산업과 연계한 특성화학과를 중점 육성하는 한편, 산업현장 교육을 강화해 학생들의 현장적응력을 배양하기 위한 현장실습 학점제를 운영하고 있다. 또한 캡스톤 디자인의 수행결과를 산업체에 기술이전하거나 취업으로 연계하고 있으며, 지역 업체와 연계된 취업연계 실무반 활성화로 취업을 촉진할 수 있는 구조를 구축하고 있다.

사업단의 이 같은 노력은 실제적인 결과물로서 그 성과를 드러내고 있다. 일례로 학생창업에 성공한 김영준 대표는 골프볼 코어의 정확한 무게중심을 찾아내서 표시하는 ‘밸런스 회전라인 자동화 표시 시스템’을 개발, 특허등록하고 70억 원 상당의 매출을 확보한 상태이며, 조리과학과 학생들은 ‘천연기능성 식품을 첨가한 카페 사이드 메뉴’를, 신문방송학과 학생들은 ‘스튜디오 녹화제작 퍼블릭 엑세스’ 기술, 스포츠레저학과에선 ‘스마트폰 어플을 이용한 S라인 다이어트 운동법’ 등의 아이디어 상품을 개발하고 제품화를 진행 중이다. 또한 토목공학과 정제평 교수는 ‘부동·침하구조물 보정 파일링 기술’, 전기공학과 정대원 교수는 ‘산업용 진공청소기 모터개발’, 전자공학과 김광택 교수는 ‘광섬유 V홈 제조기술’, 컴퓨터공학과 이상현 교수는 ‘3D프린터 알고리즘 개발’ 등 특허 출원과 가족회사의 매출신장에 기여하며 호평을 받고 있다.

양승학 단장은 “사업단의 가장 큰 성과라면 무엇보다 이공계와 비이공계의 모든 교수 및 학생들이 산학협력의 즐거움과 보람을 함께 맛보는 경험을 갖게 된 것이라고 할 수 있습니다. 이는 향후 대학 전반에 걸쳐 산학협력사업이 확산되고 정착될 수 있는 원동력이 되리라 생각합니다”라고 밝혔다. 또한 양 단장은 향후 더 많은 가족회사와 고용전제 글로벌 인턴십 협약을 체결해 학생들이 태국, 베트남, 대만 등 해외 현장에서 인턴십을 수행하고 취업과 연계할 수 있는 프로그램을 추진할 계획이라고 덧붙였다. 

산학협력사업은 교수와 학생, 임직원 등 대학의 모든 구성원과 지역사회 산업체의 적극적인 참여와 협력 없이는 성공하기 어렵다. 또한 이러한 관계를 잘 조율하고 매끄럽게 이끌어나갈 LINC사업단의 역할도 빼놓을 수 없다. 괄목할만한 성과를 창출하며 기업과 대학의 관계를 새롭게 정립하고 있는 호남대학교 LINC 사업단의 앞으로의 행보를 기대해 본다.

Achieving ‘excellent’ in government evaluation three years in a row
LINC (Leaders in industry-university Cooperation) is pursuing a new leading model combining the previous industry-academic cooperation, talent promotion and regional research center support projects. Honam University’s LINC among them has exerted its effort for building ‘industry-academy friendly human resource management’, ‘industry-academy-centered professor recruitment’, ‘field-centered curriculum’ and ‘work experience & start-up training’. The university was chosen as the sole second phase LINC in Gwangju City in 2009 and has suggested an advanced cooperation model based on its knowhow and capabilities and is leading the innovation in university education. As a result, Honam University LINC received the best and excellent grades in government evaluation in 2012, excellent grade in supplementary project evaluation in 2013 and yet another excellent grade in recent evaluation. This means that Honam University marked the top university in LINC project in Jeolla Province and Jeju Island. The university received high scores for expanding the industry-academic cooperation to the whole university level regardless subjects and for supporting companies to increase sales through technology improvement and obtaining patents. Director Seunghak Yang of Honam University LINC says “We are determined to be the hub of regional industry-academic cooperation by turning the research-centered university education system to the actual industry-academy friendly environment so that both students and companies can satisfy each other’s needs and wants.” 

Creating substantial results through actualizing ideas and technologies
Director Yang believes that universities should function as regional think tanks. They should promote regional industry and economy through actualizing ideas and technologies by working together with regional companies. For this, Honam University LINC is encouraging professors to actively engage in industry-academic cooperation by introducing related recruitment and appraisal policies for them, promoting specialized departments intensively and strengthening work experience. Also, the LINC is connecting the results of capstone design to the industry through technology transfer, employment and career support. As a result, a student CEO Youngjun Kim developed ‘balance rotation line auto marking system’ of a golf ball which finds the precise center of gravity and has already secured $7M worth sales, students of cooking department developed ‘cafe side menu’ made of natural functional ingredients, students of mass communication ‘studio recording production public access technology’ and students of sports leisure science ‘S line diet exercise app’ and they are working on commercializing their brainchilds.

Also, a civil engineering professor Jaepyeong Jeong developed ‘uneven settlement structure correction piling technology’, electrical engineering professor Daewon Jeong ‘industrial vacuum cleaner motor’, electronic engineering professor Gwangtaek Kim ‘optical fiber V groove manufacturing technology’ and computer science professor Sanghyeon Lee ‘3D printer algorithm’ and they already have applied for patents. Director Yang says “Our biggest achievement is that all the students of the university regardless their major are involved in industry-academic cooperation both in theory and practice. I think this will be our driving force and great asset to promote regional economy.” Meanwhile, Yang is planning to support students to have internship programs in Thailand, Vietnam and Taiwan through signing various global internship agreements. Industry-academic cooperation is not possible without working together with professors, students and regional companies as well as the role of LINC. Power Korea hopes that Honam University LINC will greatly contribute to the development of industry-academic cooperation in the national level.
