[Cover Story] Dongchon Ancient Architecture CEO Okchul Kim
Keeping the elements of traditional Korean architecture
Kim restores cultural assets like Namhansanseong Fortress and Hyeonji Temple

Kim starts his career as carpenter at the age of 20
Establishing Dongchon Ancient Architecture to provide cultural asset restoration services

CEO Kim of Dongchon Ancient Architecture was born in Boryeong, South Chungcheong Province. With his hometown senior, Kim started to learn carpentry from Jeongmun Lee from his early age. He treated timbers with great dexterity and started his career as a carpenter in earnest at Jeokjo Temple in Seoul. During the first three years he learned all the necessary skills without being paid and worked 3 more years to master various techniques. When the construction market were declined he worked for fishing boats for 3 years and even obtained navigator’s licence. He thought he might never have worked with wood again if Park who knew Kim’s skills called him back to join the project of rebuilding the main hall of Sungjo Temple. With the feeling of half thrill and half fear, Kim ardently carried out his tasks. He then participated in numerous cultural asset restoration projects including Nanhansanseong Fortress and Hyeonji Temple in Chuncheon for the next 13 years. As time went by, he felt his ambition growing up and the need to establish his own firm to actualize many of his dreams. Thus born was Dongchon Ancient Architecture.

“Choosing quality wood is a must regardless the origins”
However, leading a company was not an easy task. Kim thought it was very important to make clear about the way he wanted to lead in his life and decided to walk the single path no matter what people and situation would say. And this actually made Kim and Dongchon Ancient Architecture where they are today with much recognition in the field. Kim makes it a top priority to choose quality wood and to fumigate and dry them perfectly because the raw woods cannot just be used for building. They have to go through many processes to fit the requirement of the traditional Korean houses for longevity and moistureproof. Also important especially nowadays is to provide the materials the customer wants. For this reason, Kim is not strict about using domestic woods only but quality is more important than their origines. Kim says “Land pine for example is widely used for Korean houses but the wood has some problems after the month of May. If there is a better foreign material that can be an alternative, it should be used instead.”

“It makes me feel worth when people are happy living in a house I built”
“Keeping tradition alongside modern elements are important”

CEO Kim says “I feel really worth when people show their gratitude for building such nice house. For this reason, I always give my very best in doing my job not to make any flaw or fault. I’m very proud of my achievements so far.”

Building better and better houses
Kim says “It is regretful that many carpenters are rather regarded as assemblers considering the fact that carpentry actually requires professional techniques. However, I’ve never looked back my way and am only thinking to make better and better houses for people.” Kim pays a great respect to a master carpenter Baeneung Kim. He said that he learned a lot from him and wanted to be a master carpenter like him. Power Korea hopes that Kim and Dongchon Ancient Architecture will contribute to creating a better housing culture in Korea.
