When analogue sensitivity and interior formative meet sculpture
Vintage and antique objects blooming in symbolism and metaphor
Sculptor Bumdon Shin

Finding non-daily or sensitivity of the time from daily routine
We sometimes encounter analogue objects when walking on the street or in a cafe. While most of those old objects disappear, these are lucky to survive in the name of antique for collection or interior. But if these objects are chosen as tools to represent the time by an artist, they can reborn as artistic works. Sculptor Shin says “I work with old objects. But as I earn a living in architecture and interior, I often apply architectural or interior elements to my works. I think sculpture can sometimes interpreted as part of architecture or interior.” Shin mainly uses flowers and thinks they are our daily lives, interior, symbolism and the fruits of formative arts. Shin continues “Flowers are decorative, symbol of life’s peak time, has beautiful shapes and analogue sensitivity.” The works Shin displayed at International Sculpture Festa 2014 can be seen as variations of flowers. ‘Women’ for example is a female shape with flowery clothes for skin while ‘Memory19840302’ is a vintage clover typewriter with flowers blooming as symbol of language and ‘Memory19800302’ is a marathon typewriter symbolizing the sound of a gramophone. After expressing symbolism in these various objects, Shin sometimes adds personal story to the works from various points of views such as duplicity of an object or its satirical elements. For example, Shin gives slightly unrealistic details to the legs of a chair because an object gets interpreted by how one sees it. For another example, Shin made the receiver of a dial telephone like a fish with a flower for the head and flowery patterns for the scales. ‘Tomorrow’, a flower patterned chair on an analogue weighing machine, indicates a chair’s symbolism and the machine’s taboo on exposing the weight. Shin says “If we change our ideas, we can create art works. I think my works can make people imagine something.”

Meanwhile, Shin shows a great interest in making films. After watching a cult movie ‘Eraserhead’, Shin thought the film director had the same idea and Shin realized that cultural background and the essence of a man are different matters and the latter could be a mutual language of human history. Likewise, Shin’s work ‘Secrete’ is an inspiration from the movie ‘The Tin Drum’ and Shin expressed the metaphor of sex (male and female) and actions in the work. However, no matter where the inspiration came from, Shin is an expert of using various objects. Shin reminded himself of a scene of drama when seeing a sewing machine “Many old dramas use the story of a mother supporting her son, who would be a judge or a lawyer, by working really hard on a sewing machine. She gives up her own life for her son and the machine becomes the symbol of the devoted mother. I used the machine for my object and named for ‘Mother’ with which I drew a great sympathy from the appreciators.” Shin’s works can been seen as a compromise between pure art and practicality. For this reason, you will certainly find a pleasure if you add your own interpretation to the works.
