요트, 골프와 함께 대표적인 귀족스포츠인 승마는 그간 한국에서 내기도박의 이미지가 강해 제대로 진가를 발휘하지 못했다. 그러나 이제는 동물과 교감하는 놀이문화, 유소년의 정서발달과 예절을 배우는 긍정적인 레저 스포츠로 거듭나고 있다. 경기도교육청의 마을교육공동체 프로젝트에서 인성교육의 성공사례로 꼽히는 안산승마힐링 꿈의학교를 탐방해 보았다.

승마는 예절의 스포츠, 말과 함께 청소년의 호연지기와 꿈을 키워

2011년 구제역 파동으로 축산업이 위기에 처한 상황에서 말 산업촉진법이 개정된 것을 계기로 경마, 동물원 관람으로 접할 수 있었던 말들을 승마장에서 더 많이 볼 수 있게 되었다. 경기도승마협회 이사, 한라마협회 경기도지부장을 맡고 트리플밸리승마장을 경영하고 있는 박경남 교장은 “승마는 귀족 스포츠로 국민소득이 상위권이어야 대중화될 수 있지만, 선진국에서는 놀이문화로 자리 잡은 반면 우리나라에서는 사행성 취미생활로 여겨지는 것이 아쉬웠다” 며 원래 하던 무역업과 함께 승마장을 경영하기 시작했다. 더 나아가 박 교장은 성인의 정식 승마문화뿐 아니라, 말과의 교감과 실제 체험으로 아이들의 정서함양에 도움이 될 것이라고 생각했다. 그래서 경기도교육청의 공모사업에 응하게 되었고, 안산승마힐링 꿈의학교는 마을교육공동체프로젝트 중 하나로 1,100여 명이 넘는 지원자 속에 유소년 80명이 선발되어 진행되었다. “학교에서는 입시 위주의 교육을 하게 된다. 그런데 레저 스포츠 중 유일하게 복장규정이 있는데다 말을 접하며 상대에 대한 매너와 예절교육이 필수인 승마를 통해 아이들이 스트레스를 해소하고 오감체험을 통한 힐링을 할 수 있으리라 기대했다” 실제로 2011년 이후, TV드라마와 사극의 PPL을 통해 승마장과 말들이 많이 소개되면서 관심이 커졌고, 아이들은 승마라는 스포츠를 체험할 수 있는 공간이 한국에 있다는 것을 인식하면서 말에 대한 살아있는 지식을 깨우치게 되었다. 꿈의학교에서는 말타는 기술보다는 주로 말과 교감하는 법을 배운다. 또 학교에서 접하기 어려운 말을 직접 대하면서 지구에서 동물과 공존하는 법, 700여 평의 공간에서 작물을 기르는 텃밭 체험 등 자연실습과 말과 연관된 다양한 직업을 접하게 된다. “승마관련직종에는 조교사, 기수, 선수, 대동물수의사, 승마지도자, 재활승마지도자, 승마힐링지도자 등이 있다. 그리고 게임을 할 때 상대를 이기는 것보다 자신의 말과 얼마나 교감에 성공하느냐가 중요한 스포츠다. 그래서 장차 자신의 진로와 적성을 결정할 때 꿈의학교에서의 경험이 큰 도움이 되기를 바라며 프로그램을 짰다” 이렇게 어릴 때부터 승마의 진실과 긍정적인 면을 먼저 배우게 하면서, 승마를 생활 속으로 끌어들이는데 노력을 다하고 있는 박 교장은 토종말에 대한 애정이 크다. “세계적인 명마로 등록된 제주 조랑말의 우수함을 아이들에게 더 알리고 싶다. 특히 등록되어 있는 제주마와 달리, 우수한 다른 품종인 한라마의 인지도를 높여 외국에 수출할 수 있는 환경을 만들고 싶다. 외국 노인들이 장수하는 비결이 관절에 무리가 가지 않는 승마를 즐기기 때문이라고도 한다. 그래서 지금처럼 장애물을 잘 넘는 경기 위주의 승마도 좋지만, 근본적으로는 대중적인 보급 확대에 힘써 승마문화 저변을 넓히고 싶다. 이를 위해 우선 아이들이 말과 함께하는 좋은 교육을 꾸준히 진행하게 될 것이다. 말의 섬세함은 인간의 외상 후 스트레스증후군에도 큰 도움이 된다” 박 교장은 친근한 조랑말을 아이들에게 접하도록 하고, 말들이 안정된 환경에서 사람을 대하도록 공간을 확보하느라 적자를 감수하며 승마업계의 오랜 관행을 타파하고 승마의 진면목을 알리고 있다. “고객의 눈높이에 맞는 교습법이 반드시 진행되어야 한다. 또 정부의 공적 사업에 승마관련직업교육이 들어가길 바란다. 그러려면 우선 놀이 문화로 시작되는 스포츠라는 인식으로 승마를 받아들였으면 좋겠다” 이렇듯 승마의 다양한 순기능을 알리고자 하는 박 교장을 통해, 국내 승마산업의 긍정적인 측면이 한층 부각되고 승마가 생활스포츠의 일원으로 당당히 자리 잡을 날이 기대된다.

Horse riding promotes decorum, dream and great morale

With the introduction of Horse Industry Promotion Act in 2011, people can now see horses at horse riding courses in addition to zoo. CEO/Principal Gyeongnam Park of Triple Valley is serving as Director of Gyeonggido Equestrian Federation and branch manager of Halla Horse Association Gyeonggi Province. Park says “Horse riding is an aristocratic sport. But many people enjoyed it as a hobby in advanced countries while it was regarded as speculative sport in Korea.” To promote the sport, Park jumped into the horse riding industry to spread its sound culture while keeping his original job in the trade industry. He applied to a public project of Gyeonggi Provincial Office of Education and Triple Valley was part of joint education project and 80 children of 1,100 were chosen for the project. Park says “Schools teach students mainly the skills for examination. But horse riding requires uniform and manners and I thought that children can release stress and get healed by horse riding.” Numerous TV dramas have introduced horses through PPL since 2011 and children came to know there are horse riding courses in Korea. Children mainly learn the ways to communicate with horses and the value of living together rather than the skill itself at Triple Valley. They also experience farming on the 2,314 square meter land. Park says “Related jobs of horse riding are horse trainer, jockey, horse rider, veterinarian, horse riding instructor, horse riding instructor for rehabilitation and horse riding healing instructor. Communicating with horses is more important than winning the game in horse riding. I made curriculum that can help children find their aptitude and career.” Park’s love of native horses is very special. He says “Jeju pony is registered as a globally excellent steed and I want to let children know about it. I particularly want to raise public recognition on Halla Horses so that we can export them to overseas. Some people say westerners live longer because they enjoy horse riding which does not damage joints of our body. So I want to spread horse riding culture. For this, I will carry out education for children first. The delicateness of a horse is good for improving posttraumatic stress syndrome.” Despite a deficit of the business, Park is doing his best to provide a safe horse riding place for children and to change the longstanding practices of the industry. Park says “Providing customized training is very important. I also hope that horse riding should be included in public programmes so that people can recognize it as a sound leisure activity and a sport.” Power Korea supports Park and Triple Valley.
