Interpretation of sculpture that changes completed space structure organicallyReinterpretation of nature by biological inspiration of structural forms in space

junghee Kim, Sculpture Prof. at Sungshin Women's University / Vice Chairwoman of Korean Sculptor's Association
Reconstructing biological propagation of sponge gourd in stainless steel

Space and structure for sculptors are important means to amplify and protect their sculptures. Sculptor junghee Kim has studied about space and structure in relation to sculpture for the last 35 years. Kim regards the existing installations and backgrounds as part of her sculpture. She then created a pictorial and abstract space systematically and combined objects. This is closely related with the work 'Cocoon' or HR Giger's works in which the forms and elements of objects have a very important meaning. For this reason, Kim pours imagination, sense and sensitivity in the formativeness of her work's type and structure to emphasize spiritual and spatial interpretation. Kim studies given subjects with steel weld and irregular shapes. She was enchanted by the probability and dexterity of hand made sculpture which the computer cannot execute. Recently, she shifted from structures in space to biological theme because she realized space and structure are forms made by human. Instead, she copied the form of sponge gourd to make her new works. The porous structure in sponge gourd functions to hold water to propagate the seed. If we can find a structural side on a section of a plant, we might see the aesthetic values of hidden nature like the structure of a Korean house surrounded by four walls which is an effective imitation of nature's flow." As a result, Kim and her students hand made a 12m high sponge gourd. It tells that there are regular forms in irregularity and structural things transform into organic things in space. She also reproduced the inner part of sponge gourd as sculpture by penetrating the steel frame with light. Through this, she realized her imagination and secured each space.

Artistic spirit and cultural value should be recognized

In her 'Space' series, Kim persuades appreciators with structural device, harmony in nature and dimensional understanding. Apart from her creative ideas, Kim also gives much thought to the direction of the Korean sculpture world. She says "As a professor, I have seen many creative sculptors. It is regretful that the government cannot recognize their potential. I hope the Korean society values art more than now like those advanced countries if we are to be a cultural powerhouse. It is understandable that artists turn their career to art related consultation as a periodic trend." She also emphasizes artistic spirit to her students by saying "Artists can be seen a happy group of society who do what they want to do. But they are under greater pressure to create something new. They are like a clown on a hot iron plate. Nevertheless, they have to endure the pain if they want to create something new." Meanwhile, she served as a member of Steering Committee of Sculpture Festa and felt a sense of kinship with the fellow sculptors who always try something new. Like a goddess weaver in myth is a symbol of moderation, Kim's weaving by welding is full of patience and love to objects. And this of her source for inspiration will be the center of her capacity that contains warmness and persuasive ideas.
