“사람들이 가지 않은 길을 터 놓는 것을 좋아한다” 조각가 김태수 작가는 조각 계에서 드물게 물성과 회화적 색채를 동시에 연구하고 적용한 예술가다. 돌, 나무, 브론즈 소조를 거쳐 스테인레스 스틸과 레진에 정착해 조각에 도색을 하고 생동감을 불어넣는 일련의 작업을 통해, ‘생명의 소리’에서 공간과 유동적인 부피감을 가진 색상으로 ‘생태계의 풍부한 흐름’에 도달한 김태수 작가의 창조관점에 대해 정리해 보았다.

<Eco-Flow> 시리즈로 개체들 속 삼라만상의 조화를 조형하다

땅 속 씨앗의 첫 번째 모험은 싹을 틔우는 것이다. 작은 타원이 불규칙한 형태로 부풀어 오르기를 반복하고 씨앗에서 줄기가, 그리고 잎이, 꽃이, 열매가 연속적으로 자라난다. 들리지 않는 소리는 이내 물결처럼 파장을 만든다. 이 무한한 가능성에서 생동감과 생명력을 느끼고 우주의 섭리와 자연의 지혜를 읽는 것은 J.R.R.톨킨이 창조한 신령한 땅의 주인 ‘엔트와이프’들만은 아니었을 것이다. 예술이라는 바탕 안에서 모험과 도전을 거듭했던 조각가 김태수 작가도 그랬다. 화가를 꿈꾸다 하루 종일 움직여도 무언가를 창조할수록 개운해지는 기질 덕분에 에너제틱한 활동이 동반되는 조각으로 전향했고, 생명의 소리로 상징되는 살아 움직이는 것, 생명이 피어나는 과정에 대해 다각도로 표현해 왔다. “그동안 조각에서 색채 중심으로 연구를 한 사람은 없었다. 두 가지 원색을 대비시키는 특징도 이 연구에서 왔다. 생명의 힘과 내가 에너지를 얻는 원천은 비슷하다고 생각한다. 또 자연을 통해 생명의 힘을 발견하는 것을 표현하려 했는데, 이 과정에서 구상한 것을 현실로 만들기 위해 조각 방식에 새로운 패러다임을 받아들였다. 그래서 간격을 맞춘 도면을 짤 때는 규칙적인 질서와 흐름을 보장하는 현대 문명의 힘을 빌린다. 그렇게 돌이나 나무를 손으로 다루던 작업에서 디지털 작품으로 전향했는데 소재가 혁신을 이루었고 수학적 계산과 그래픽 수치로 정확성을 높였을 뿐, 내용은 똑같이 ‘생명의 힘’을 다루고 있다” 또한 김 작가는 360도로 감상할 수 있는 입체성을 강화했고, 시각적인 것으로 전달하는 한계를 극복하고자 벽에 걸거나 바닥에 놓을 수 있는 살아있는 유기체 같은 형태로 만들게 된다. <Eco-Flow>시리즈는 노랑과 녹색, 적색과 청색의 유연한 선들이 유동적인 부피를 갖고 마치 책장의 단면이나 아코디언 같은 구조를 이루면서 원과 곡선, 타원과 아치 등 여러 패턴으로 반복된다. “패턴이 불규칙한 타원을 이루면서 커지는 것은 삼라만상의 조화, 그리고 인간과 자연을 어우르는 생태환경의 가늠할 수 없는 크기와 깊이를 상징한다”고 덧붙이는 김 작가는 ‘생명의 소리’가 ‘생태의 풍부한 흐름’으로 진화하면서 공간 내에서 부피감과 영역을 갖게 되고, 더욱 생생해져서 표현하고자 하는 바를 더 잘 전달하게 되었음을 강조했다. 2009년 전시에서 작품을 소개하며 관객들로부터 색을 강렬히 쓰는 조각가, 생생함을 구조물로 재현한 작가라는 평가를 받은 것이 가장 기억에 남았다는 김 작가는 자극과 감상, 떠오르는 단서를 정직하게 표현하기 위해, 현실에서 실현하기 어려운 가능성에 대해 언제나 상상하고 꿈을 꾼다고 전한다. 그래야 성장과 성숙, 우주의 섭리를 색과 확장된 양감으로 표현하는 작품의 완성으로 이어지기 때문이다. 보잘것없는 우주 먼지가 모여 별을 잉태하는 성단을 이루듯, 아주 작은 꿈이 열정으로 이어지고 눈에 보이지 않는 것도 표현할 수 있는 비결인 셈이다. 김 작가는 창작자로서 시행착오에서 오는 수고로움을 두려워하지 않고, 총 12회에 달하는 개인전을 치르며 작품을 창조할 때의 희열이 컸기 때문에, 전시를 치렀을 때마다 성장하는 기쁨을 아는 20대 같은 모습으로 남고 싶다고 한다. 그런 희망은 호전성을 버린 도전이며, 미지의 세계로 나가는 진취성의 파장을 그리게 마련이다. 투박한 브리오슈로 남는 대신 크레페나 밀푀유로 겹겹이 구워진 반죽처럼, 김 작가의 작품들은 언제까지나 그렇게 순수한 갈망에서 나온 화려하고도 창조적인 곡선을 펼치고 있을 것이다.

Bringing invisible desire of unachievable dreams to reality

Eco-Flow series expresses the harmony of all things in nature

A seed needs to bud to start her adventure in life. The little oval starts to swell in irregular forms and goes through stem, leaf and flower to become a fruit. This unheard sound of growing makes wavelengths in the air like water makes ripples on the surface. This limitless possibilities of natural phenomena might enable us to see and feel the vitality, wisdom and the providence of the universe. Sculptor Taesue Kim paid a greater interest in finding and expressing this sound of life and its creating living things. Kim says "Nobody has given much thought about colours in sculpture as far as I know. My research on contrasting two primary colours, therefore, came from this idea. I think I gain the energy of my life from the vitality in nature and I transfer the energy into sculpture. I use modern technology to design and measure my works before actualization. This is because I want to give preciseness in executing my works but they all aim to express one thing: the power of life." Kim emphasized on third dimension so that people can see the works from all angles. Kim also hangs the work on a wall or lays on the floor. In the Eco-Flow series, Kim uses yellow, green, red and blue colours for supple lines and for fluid volumes in various repeatable patterns like circle, curve, oval and arch. Kim says "The patterns expanding in irregular ovals symbolize the harmony of all things in nature and the unfathomable size and depth of ecological environment. The sound of life evolves into the abundant flow of ecology to secure volume and territory and becomes ever more vivid." The exhibition in 2009 was memorable for Kim as it gave her the title 'the sculptor with impressive use of colours'. Kim says that she always makes an attempt to bring invisible desire of unachievable dreams to reality. Because only then she can express the growth, ripening and the providence of the universe in her works. Like the dusts gather together to become a star, so do the unachievable dreams to be alive with passion. And with this passion, Kim has held 12 times of solo exhibitions so far. In these exhibitions, she wanted to remain in her 20s who knows about the joy of growing up. And Kim's works will always remain with these colourful and creative lines in pure desire.
