It is a global issue to find measures against environmental pollution and energy exhaustion. Therefore, developing core technologies can make a nation to lead the field in the global market. The nation can also use it as a new economic driving force. Opened its door in 2013 with the support of the Korea Environmental Industry & Technology Institute, COWEB focuses on commercializing organic waste for energy. Director Bae says “We skipped the initial stage of the project and jumped into the demonstrative stage from the beginning. For this, we run the research facilities in full through technology innovation and management skills in order to develop down to earth technologies in the field.” Currently, COWEB is aiming to complete ‘Biogas Facility for Food Waste’ by 2016 and is carrying out a research. ‘High efficiency/closed circuit type biogas system’ is to be applied to the facility and it is expected to improve the existing stink problem significantly. Director Bae says “The facility will be completely enclosed in the process from taking in the waste to releasing so that it can efficiently control the bad smell. It has been already approved for new technology and a technological test will take place by the end of development.” When completed, the bad image on food waste disposal facilities will be turned into ‘clean environmental energy facilities’ and they also contribute to activation of related industries.

Energy circulation technology that will change the future

Director Bae says “Many food waste biogasfying facilities in Korea are run based on imported technologies which have not been proved and they are not very effective in our environment.” COWEB on the other designs and constructs in accordance with the Korean environment and encourages the related companies to run a three year research on running skills and a 7 year compulsory commercial operation. As the output of this R&D, the biogas will be made into CBG (Compressed Bio Gas) by applying gas purification and operation technology for clean automotive fuel. Also, as part of government’s RFS (Renewable Fuel Standards) in the category of ‘Six Climate Change Response Technologies of Bio Energy’, COWEB is carrying out R&D to produce butanol from wasted biomass. This also has been chosen as one of the core tasks of Jeonnam Creative Economy Innovation Center which has drawn a $43M investment already. Backed up by this, they can possibly succeed the production of world’s first practical wasted-timber biobutan by 2017. Meanwhile, Director Bae is emphasizing on the importance of learning from experience and listening to the advice from other related organizations. Bae thinks that the reasons Korea has not drawn substantial results in the field ascribe to absence of operational management and manpower, disposal-centered system, lack of economic feasibility and limited domestic market. Bae added “COWEB will create profitable businesses, suggest solutions to current environmental and energy issues and promote the excellence of Korean technologies to the world.” Power Korea gives an enthusiastic cheering to Bae and COWEB.
