스피드보다 효율적인 출력·연비 차량성능 극대화시키는 ‘ECU맵핑’의 대중화 힘쓴다

노트북에서 원하는 프로세서와 디스플레이를 고른 후 그래픽카드를 업그레이드하듯, 그리고 맞춤 양장점에서 체형에 맞게 가봉하듯, 자동차에도 취향에 따라 외관을 변경하는 것은 잘 알려져 있다. 여기서 더 나아가 차량의 출력과 연비를 조절하고 근본적인 사용효율을 높여주는 ‘ECU맵핑’이라는 엔진 업그레이드방법이 있다. 이 기술을 대중화하기 위해 노력하는 리맵핑 랩스페이스 김선우 대표를 만나 맞춤형 차량을 만들고 활용하는 방법을 알아본다. 

내 차의 브레인을 업그레이드하는 맞춤형 토탈맵핑솔루션이 있다
자동차 연비와 출력을 향상시키기 위해 흔히 주유 시 소모품인 화학 첨가제를 넣거나 전류/전압을 관리하는 전장 부분의 개조 방법을 많이 쓰곤 한다. 하지만 근본적이고 합리적인 방법은 자동차의 브레인이자 중앙관제 역할을 하는 ECU(엔진컨트롤유닛)장치에 접속해서 내장된 데이터를 업그레이드하는 것이다. 엔진, 파워트레인, 전장 등 하드웨어를 조율하는 메인 컴퓨터인 ECU에는 연소, 점화, 폭발, 배기 등을 조율하는 소프트웨어가 프로그래밍 되어 있고, 바로 이 부분에서 출력(토크값), 연료분사량, 연료분사시간, 터보에 관련된 전자 제어시스템 등 여러 데이터를 제어, 조율하는 기능이 각 차량에 맞게 세팅되어 있다. 리맵핑 랩스페이스의 김선우 대표는 “맵핑을 요구하는 분들의 90%가 출력 값 때문이다. 출력을 높이면 연비가 떨어진다고 생각하시는 경우가 많은데, 연비를 효율적으로 관리하면서 출력과 연비을 동시에 올릴 수 있는 방법이 바로 ECU 소프트웨어 업그레이드인 리맵핑이다. 디젤차량이 보급화 되면서 이 기술이 독립적으로 형성된 것이다. 디젤 엔진 특성상 ECU에서 관장하는 많은 부분이 연료에 대한 것이고, 양산 차량은 상향평준화, 표준화되어 출고되기 때문에 소프트웨어만 바꾸면 된다. 옷으로 치면 테일러메이드(맞춤형)인 셈”이라고 설명한다. “ECU는 70%의 시장을 점유한 보쉬, 그리고 델파이, 지멘스, 컨티넨탈의 비중이 높다. 액셀러레이터를 평소 30%만 밟는다면, 0에서 30까지의 범위 안에서 낼 수 있는 출력과 효율성을 높이도록 맵핑을 한다” 김 대표는 맵핑에 필요한 데이터 값을 고객의 운전특성에 맞게 커스터마이징하고, 새로운 차 기종이 나올 때마다 연구하고 연료 등에 대한 데이터를 만들어 차량 내구성이 감당할 수 있는 튜닝 기준을 만든다고 한다. 동일한 차량이지만, 제한된 출력을 개선해서 연료만으로는 바꿀 수 없는 차량의 스펙트럼이 더 넓어지는 가장 효과적인 방법인 셈이다. 

대중성/전문성으로 인정받는 맵핑 문화 선도할 것
김 대표는 지난 1월 국내의 엔진 업그레이드 시장형성을 위해 리맵팅 랩스페이스를 출범하였고 자동차 출력테스트와 시험주행을 동시에 할 수 있는 밀양, 경기 광주 등 외곽 지역에 있는 업체들과 업무제휴를 하고 있다. 해외에서는 고급라인인 MERCEDES BENZ BRABUS, BMW ALPINA 등이 공식적으로 AS중이며, 각 센터에서 서비스를 다 해주는 수준에 비하면 대기업 중 현대가 시도하고 있는 국내 시장에서는 걸음마 단계로서 김 대표 역시 SNS, 바이럴마케팅을 통해 인지도를 높이고 있다. 김 대표는 운전자의 니즈를 고려하지 않고 출력향상만을 위한 맵핑보다, 주로 내구성과 기계적인 한계에 무리하지 않고 맞춤형으로 승부하는 맵핑의 대중화를 추구한다. “모두가 수입차를 구입할 수 없고 각각의 요구사항이 다르기에, 우리의 캐릭터는 고객의 니즈 충족이 1차 조건이다. 또 국내 소수 전문가들은 차량성능개선, 즉 일반인 시장을 추구하는 마인드이며 우리도 비슷한 생각이다” 자동차 문화에서 판매와 정비 시장이 양분하고 있다면, 이제는 16비트 ECU가 상용화됐고 곧 32비트가 출시될 예정이다. 또 컴퓨터의 CPU처럼 ECU에도 BMW, 벤츠 등의 상위 라인업 차량은 두 개의 ECU로 출고되니 하드웨어적인 개발은 거의 완성된 상태고 이제는 소프트웨어를 통해 업그레이드를 하는 것이 세계적 추세다. “우리 고객들 중 긍정적인 피드백을 주시는 분들이 많다. AUDI A6를 예로 들자면 풀 탱크 주유상태로 서울에서 부산을 왕복할 때 용인에서 다시 주유를 하곤 했는데, ECU맵핑 후에는 왕복을 하고 하루 반나절을 더 탈 수 있을 만큼 연비가 좋아졌다는 것이다. 처음엔 차가 빨라졌다고 느끼실 것이고, 다음에는 연비와 효율이 좋다는 것을 알게 된다고 하신다” 건축 경영과 사업기획, 금융에 몸담은 경험이 있었던 김 대표는 향후 국내에서 맵핑 시장을 선점하고 기술 콘텐츠를 보급할 시장을 형성하고자 한다. 김 대표는 인지도와 기술개발은 물론 장차 스마트폰/사물인터넷류의 발전으로 상용화될 OBD2 시스템에 대비해 공부하는 중이다. 그리고 벤츠 공식서비스센터 마이스터 출신이자 8년 이상의 경력을 가진 파트너들과 함께 콘텐츠를 완성해 가는 중이며, 해외 협력업체들을 늘려가고 있어서 시장 진입 전망은 꾸준히 밝다. “과거의 하드웨어 위주로 손대는 자동차 튜닝 문화의 소수 지향적인 면을 상쇄하면서 제대로 된 ECU맵핑 문화를 만들어 갈 것이다”는 김 대표가 해외에서는 일상이 된 ECU맵핑 기술을 국내에도 성공적으로 정착시켜, 애프터마켓을 업그레이드 할 ‘스탠다드 기술’을 선도할 날이 하루빨리 오기를 바란다.

Introducing customized total mapping solution that can upgrade the brain of automobile
People use chemical additives or remodel the electronic parts of a car to improve fuel efficiency and output. But the fundamental and effective solution have to be upgrading ECU (Engine Control Unit) that functions as the brain of a car. It is loaded with software that controls combustion, ignition, explosion and exhaust and it tunes the engine, power-train and the whole length of a car. Electronic control system of output, fuel injection and time and turbo is ideally set up in each car. CEO Kim says “90% drivers want mapping due to output values. Many think that high output lowers fuel efficiency but ‘remapping (ECU software upgrading)’ can increase output and fuel efficiency at the same time. This technology was independently introduced at the start of diesel cars. The ECU of diesel engine is closely related to fuels and mass produced cars only need to change the software as they are released through upward leveling. It’s same as tailor made clothes.” Kim continues “70% of ECU is produced by Bosch, Delphi, Siemens and Continental. If you step on the accelerator by 30% in general, we do mapping to increase output and efficiency within the boundary of 0 and 30.” Kim takes the driver’s habit into account when mapping and constantly studies on new models and fuels to make date for ideal tuning. It means that you can maximize your car’s performance through remapping. 

Leading mapping culture recognized with popularity and professionalism 
In the hope of creating a new market for engine upgrading, Kim established Remapping Lab Space last January and has signed business tie-up with various related companies in Miryang and Gwangju, Gyeonggi Province for output test and test driving. Mercedes Benz Brabus and BMW Alpina are officially providing the mapping services overseas but Korea is still at the beginning stage. For this reason, Kim uses SNS and viral marketing to increase the recognition. Kim prefers customized mapping rather than output improvement mapping only. Kim says “Not everybody can afford an imported car and each driver is different. For this reason, our main focus is on providing customized services. A small group of specialists in Korea prefer improved vehicle performance and we think the same.” If car market is divided into sales and repair, 16bit ECU is now commercialized and 32bit is scheduled to come out soon. Higher model of BMW and Mercedes in particular is to use two ECU in a car and upgrade on software, therefore, is a global trend. Kim says “Our customer satisfaction rate is very good. AUDI A6, for example, can run a return journey between Seoul and Busan plus half day drive on full petrol after ECU mapping. You have to normally refuel your car at Yongin otherwise. You can feel your car running faster and also amazed at good milage.” Meanwhile, Kim is working really hard on technology development, marketing and OBD2 System that will soon be commercialized thanks to smart phone and IoT. Also, Kim is working with meisters of official Mercedes service center who have more than 8 years of experience in the field to create related contents as well as finding cooperative companies overseas. Kim says “Car tuning was based on hardware but ECU mapping will bring a new era in the field.” Power Korea hopes that Kim will contribute to development of ECU mapping technology in Korea.
