소중한 우리 아이를 빛내주는 유아동복 감성브랜드 ‘마망엘리펀트’
합리적인 가격과 다양한 디자인으로 주목받다

유아동복 시장은 오랫동안 정체기에 머물러 있었다. 몇몇 대형브랜드에 의해 독점된 시장은 포화상태에 이르며 신규사업자의 진입장벽이 되어 온 것이 사실이다. 그러나 최근 젊은 부모세대의 인식이 바뀌고, 남들과는 다른 개성 있는 스타일을 선호하게 되면서 유아동복 시장에 변화의 조짐이 두드러지고 있다.

엄마의 마음으로 만든 ‘단 하나뿐인 디자인’
트렌디하면서 개성 있는 유아동복이 높은 인기를 끌고 있다. 특히 참신한 패턴과 컬러 톤을 가지고 있으면서도, 합리적인 가격과 좋은 품질을 갖춘 제품들에 부모들의 이목이 집중되고 있다. 그 가운데서도 경기도 용인시 기흥구 서천동에 위치한 ‘마망 엘리펀트(maman elephant)’는 최근 놀라운 성장을 보여주며 유아동복 시장에 새로운 바람을 불어넣고 있다.

마망 엘리펀트에서는 고품질과 혁신적인 디자인, 가격 만족을 추구하며 신세대 실속파 엄마들을 겨냥한 제품 라인을 선보이고 있다. 특히 해외 유명 브랜드 제품과 맞먹는 고품질의 유아동복을 유통거품을 제거해 합리적인 가격으로 제공해 큰 호응을 받고 있다. 마망 엘리펀트 최지원 대표는 “저희 마망 엘리펀트의 가장 큰 경쟁력은 품질 대비 합리적인 가격이라고 할 수 있습니다. 모든 상품을 ‘내 아이에게 입힌다’는 생각으로 직접 선별하고 있으며, 다양한 디자인의 옷을 사이즈별로 한 벌씩만 구비하고 있어 희소성의 가치를 더했습니다”라고 설명했다. 대학에서 실내 디자인을 전공한 뒤 오랜 시간동안 쇼핑몰과 도매사업 등 다양한 의류사업에 종사해온 최지원 대표는 최신 트렌드를 살피는 남다른 안목과 혜안으로 유아동복 시장의 트렌드를 선도하고 있다.

“소비자를 위한, 소비자가 원하는 브랜드 만들 것”
마망 엘리펀트의 경쟁력은 창업시장에서도 높은 관심을 받고 있다. 용인 서천 본점 오픈 1년 반 만에 수원·평택·전주·금산·서울 답십리 등 각지에 18개의 매장이 오픈되어 있으며, 지금도 창업을 위한 문의가 끊이지 않고 있다고 한다. 최 대표는 “요즘 유아동복 브랜드들이 많이 생겨나고 있지만, 제품가격이 높거나 인테리어 등의 초기 투자비용이 많이 들어 사업적으로 접근하기 어려운 경우가 많습니다. 저희는 매장을 운영하시는 분들에게 공장도가격으로 옷을 직접 제공하고, 도매 루트도 알려드리고 있어 소자본창업을 원하시는 분들이 쉽게 다가갈 수 있도록 돕고 있습니다”라고 밝혔다. 이에 더해 인테리어 리모델링 전문업체인 ‘디자인730’을 함께 운영하고 있어 보다 합리적인 가격으로 맞춤형 인테리어를 제공할 수 있는 점도 마망 엘리펀트만의 강점이라고 전했다. 

좋은 아이템과 계획을 갖고도 성공을 이루기란 쉽지 않다. 성공으로 가는 길에 산재해 있는 온갖 어려움과 고난을 극복할 수 있는 강한 의지와 열정, 자신의 목표를 이루고자 끊임없이 노력하며 실천하는 자세가 필요하다는 것이 최지원 대표의 생각이다. 그는 “단순한 창업만을 위해서라면 소매시장은 누구에게나 그 문을 열어줍니다. 하지만 성공을 이루기 위해선 나만의 특별함을 찾는 것이 중요합니다. 그리고 그 특별함은 ‘소비자의 입장에서, 소비자가 원하는 것을 찾고자 하는 생각’에 담겨있다고 말씀드리고 싶습니다”라고 말했다. 무리한 사업 확대보다는 자신의 손이 닿는 범위 안에서 양보다는 질을 중시하는 브랜드, 소비자들에게 보다 좋은 제품과 디자인을 지속적으로 제공하는 브랜드를 만들기 위해 힘쓰겠다는 최지원 대표. 직접 발로 뛰며 성공의 길을 모색하고 있는 그의 노력이 보다 나은 결실을 맺게 되기를 기대한다.

Trendy and characterful clothes for babies and children are popular nowadays. They have attractive patterns, colors and quality in addition to affordable prices. Located in Seocheon-dong, Giheung-gu, Yongin-si, Gyeonggi-do, Maman Elephant, among the many similar brands in the market, recently has shown a significant growth and is creating a sensation. It satisfies many mums with good quality and design second to none when comparing with globally renowned brands but provided at a much more competitive price. CEO Choi says “Our biggest success factor is at its value for money. We choose clothes like we choose them for our own babies and children and we don’t buy it in bulk for scarcity.” Choi majored in interior design and worked in the clothes related shopping mall and wholesale industries for a long time. With her discerning eye for trend, she is leading the market at the moment. 

Making brands for consumers 
CEO Choi opened the flagship store of Maman Elephant in Seocheon-dong half years ago and is now running 18 branches in Suwon, Pyeongtaek, Jeonju, Geumsan and Dapsimni (Seoul). She says “There’s an increasing number of baby and children’s clothing brands in the market at the moment. But many of the products are provided at relatively high price due to the costly initial investment including luxury interior design. We, on the other hand, provide the clothes at factory price for store owners and we also provide them the information on wholesale routes so that the startups with small capital can have his/her own store.” Meanwhile, Choi is running an interior and remodeling firm ‘Design730’ with which she provides good interior design at a reasonable price for store owners. It is difficult to succeed in business even if you have a good idea and plan nowadays. You need passion and determination in order to overcome many hardships to come according to Choi. She says “If you want to make a success in business, you should think about what makes your business special. And I think that special comes at making a brand that can satisfy consumers’ needs and wants.” CEO Choi added that she values quality of the business more than the size and is determined to provide excellent customer services through better design and quality.
