수입차 수리전문가, 안락한 금수저보다 평생전문기술직을 택하다

해외직구로 공수한 부품, 그리고 다양한 수입차량에 최적화된 환경, 여기에 외주로 넘기지 않을 만큼 기술력을 보유하고 차량정비 자격증을 보유한 정비기능장들이 프로정신으로 무장한 곳. 싸다모터스의 차윤식 대표는 마진을 줄이고 전문성을 높인 수입차 전문시장으로 차량전문가들과 차량오너들을 만족시키는 정비 프랜차이즈를 목표로 하는 정비사계의 교수님이다.

고스펙, 자격증, 그리고 자동차에 대한 열정으로 이룬 기적
수입차량 오너를 가장 힘들게 만드는 것은 비싼 정비/수리비용에 비해 만족스런 결과를 얻지 못하는 것이다. 대기하는 수고로움에 비해 외주를 거치고 거쳐 수리결과를 통보받는 방식은 가격거품만큼이나 큰 부담이다. 이러한 수입차 관리 시장에서 전문성으로 치고 들어온 수입차수리, 외제차정비 회사인 싸다모터스의 차윤식 대표는 강남 8학군 출신이다. 그는 소위 ‘사’자 돌림인 집안에서 연세대를 나와 대기업을 다니다 집안의 엄청난 반대를 무릅쓰고 정비사의 길을 택했다. “생활력이 강한 편이다. 대학시절 아르바이트로 카센터에서 일했는데, 차를 수리하러 온 손님이 아이에게 ‘공부 못하면 저 형처럼 된다’고 말하는 것을 듣고 차량정비업에 대한 오기가 생겼다. 그 후 회사를 다니다가 정말 하고 싶은 일을 해야겠다는 결심으로 정리하고 고시원에서 숙식하며 한국폴리텍대학의 자동차과 1년 과정을 거쳤다. 그동안 주간과 야간을 모두 수료해서 정비기능사, 검사기능사, 정비 산업기사, 정비기사 검사 기사 등 자격증 8개를 모두 땄다”

공부에는 자신 있었지만 늦은 시작이었다. 그러나 좋아하는 공부에 열정이 더해져 나중에는 정비 매뉴얼을 3개월 만에 다 외우기도 했다. 그는 ‘금수저’로 살 수도 있었지만 혼자 힘으로, 그리고 발로 뛰어 기반을 다졌다. 수입차 전문정비에서 전망을 읽고 가닥을 잡은 후에는 미국 LA로 건너가 부품 회사들을 직접 뚫었다. “수입차 정비에서 제일 중요한 것이 부품공급이다. 저렴하고 다양하게 공급받을 수 있도록, 또 배운 기술을 이용해서 사업으로 연결할 방법을 찾았다. 그리고 한겨울에 전기와 파이프 공사까지 직접 하는 갖은 고생 끝에 2009년 직원 2명으로 소상공인을 위한 대출을 받아 시작했다” 총 70여 명의 직원으로 서울 강남, 강북, 강서부천, 이천점까지 4개로 늘어난 싸다모터스는 전부 직영점으로 운영해 유통마진이 저렴하며, 고급스럽고 인간적인 서비스를 모토로 삼고 있다. 싸다모터스라는 이름은 소위 가격후려치기 의도로 지은 것이 아니라고 한다. 차 대표는 스카우트한 실장급들이 모두 정비자격증을 소지한 높은 기술력에 비해 커미션이 없다는 의미이며, 공임의 퀄리티를 믿고 과잉정비와 부품교체에 치중하지 않는 전략으로 고객들의 마음을 사로잡았다고 강조한다. 

겸임교수 활동하며 정비업의 인식제고와 연관 산업 진출 포부
케이블 채널 XTM에서 인기리에 방영 중인 자동차전문프로그램 <더 벙커>의 정비 마스터로 고정 출연하여 유명세를 얻고 있는 차 대표는 BMW, 아우디, 벤츠 같은 수입차와 페라리, 람보르기니 류의 슈퍼카 등 외제차를 정비하고 수리하는 지금이나, 작은 카센터에서 가장 먼저 오픈을 하고 다양한 차량을 정비하던 막내 시절이나 차량에 접근하는 마음가짐이 한결같다. “정비는 자동차가 첨단 과학의 접목으로 만들었다는 것을 증명하는 분야다. 차 앞에서 정비사는 질병을 예방하고 치료하는 종합병원 같아야 한다. 에어백의 인체공학적 디자인과 안전시스템, 엔진 성능에서 조합까지 많은 시스템을 공부하고 다양한 차량의 특징을 꿰뚫어보아야 한다. 판금도색과 특수열처리도 차량마다 다르게 적용된다. 그러니 단지 옛날 정비에 대한 인식처럼 기계를 수리하는 개념이 아니다” 그래서 차 대표는 여전히 자동차에 대한 연구와 공부를 계속하고 있다. 웬만한 정비업체에서 고개를 내저은 차량이 도착하는 마지막 정비소가 싸다모터스라는 이야기도 있다. 얼마 전에 기능장을 취득했고 한국에 100여명 남짓 있는 기술사 자격증만을 앞둔 그는 자격증 취득 후 자동차학과의 명문인 국민대에서 대학원 전기자동차 학위를 취득하고, 폴리텍의 겸임교수로 강의를 하며 후학을 양성하고 있다.

“아버지로부터 조기교육으로 공부 외에도 어부는 고기를 잡아주는 사람이 아니라 잡는 방법을 가르쳐주는 사람이라며 창의력과 리더십을 배워 왔다. 나 역시 올바르고 전문적인 정비를 위해서도 이 점을 강조하고 있다” 불안정한 경제상황과 삼팔선, 오륙도라는 자조적인 표현이 있는 시대에, 기능직인 정비업은 평생직장이며 앞으로 노후를 대비할 유망직종이 될 것이다. ‘일찍 일어나는 새’처럼, 정년에 의지하지 않고 새 길을 개척한 차 대표는 타고난 열정으로 고급정비계의 대명사를 꿈꾼다. 현재 2천 평 5층 규모의 사옥을 짓고 있으며, 사회적으로 인정받는 전문 정비사를 키워내며 차량에 관련된 산업으로 사업구조를 확대할 예정이다. 좋은 정비는 ‘전문성’과 ‘서비스마인드’를 갖추어야 한다는 차 대표, 현재 대리운전 사업으로 싸다대리운전을 시행했고 앞으로 전국적으로 직영점을 늘리고 수입차부품, 주유, 렌터카 등 차량으로 창출할 수 있는 서비스산업기업으로 거듭나려는 그의 새로운 도전이 첫 시도만큼 좋은 결실을 맺기를 기대한다.

Passion, professionalism and qualification for success
Most imported car owners are not happy as they do not satisfy the result of repair services despite expensive cost. Long waiting time and just simple notification of the result are also make them pout. Ssada Motors is an imported specialized repair center and CEO Yoonsik Cha is from Gangnam School District 8 who is competing by professionalism in the market at the moment. He comes of a respectable family, graduated from Yonsei University and worked for a major company. But he quit the job in spite of his parents’ teeth to be a mechanic. Cha says “I think I’m a good breadwinner. I worked in a car repair center when in university. I heard a customer saying to his child that he would be like him if you did not study hard. But it actually encouraged me to make it happen in the field and I took a one year course of motor vehicles at Korea Polytechnics day and night. As a result, I obtained eight qualifications including Craftsman Motor Vehicles Maintenance, Craftsman Motor Vehicles Inspection, Industrial Engineer Motor Vehicles Maintenance and Engineer Motor Vehicles Maintenance.” It was a great achievement despite his late study in the field and he even memorized manuals by heart in three months. He could live with a sliver spoon but he pioneered his own path of life. Soon, Cha crossed over to LA to find ideal car parts companies. He says “Supplying car parts are most important in imported car repairs." Cha used a loan for small businesses and started the business with 2 people. He now runs four branches in Gangnam, Gangbuk, Gangseo & Bucheon and Icheon in Seoul with 70 staff. All the branches are directly run and the qualified professional staff provide excellent customer services. Quality car parts and honest services are the key philosophy of Ssada Motors to have an increased number of regular customers.

Working as an adjunct professor to improve recognition on car maintenance
CEO Cha is on 'The Bunker' as a regular. He is an expert mechanic especially for BMW, Audi, Mercedes, Ferrari and Lamborghini. But he is consistent in the way he treat cars regardless its kind. Cha says "A mechanic is like a doctor who prevents and cures diseases. He has to have knowledge on everything about cars from engine, safety system to design and the kind. It is a professional field of total repair and maintenance unlike the past where it was just regarded as changing parts." For this reason, Cha never stops studying on cars. Some people say the  Ssada Motors is the last place of cars which could not be repaired at any other centers. He recently obtained Master Craftsman Vehicles and is preparing for Technician License (around 100 holders in Korea). Meanwhile, he received a master's degree in electric car at Kookmin University (famous for cars) and is working as an adjunct professor at Korea Polytechnics. Cha says "My father often said a fisherman is one who teaches how to fish. I keep it deep in my heart and apply in both business and teaching." Mechanic in this time of economic hardship can be a highly competitive job that can last for life time. Like an early bird, Cha is dreaming to be the most popular name for luxury car mechanic. He is currently building a 5 storey building on a 6,611 square meter land in the hope of expanding his business scope to various related fields. Cha says a good mechanic should have 'professionalism' and 'excellent customer service'. Meanwhile, Cha is running Ssada Chauffeur Service and planning to expand directly run branches as well as entering oil and rental car businesses. Power Korea wishes Cha a prosperous 2016.
