Next generation technology that can change future energy
The first mover who leads the 21st century
Introducing high efficient, stable and cost effective future power technology

Supercritical means the state of any substance at a temperature and pressure above its critical point, where distinct liquid and gas phases do not exist while the characteristics of the both phases are revealed. CO2 has lower critical point to be a supercritical state, so CO2 can easily reach the supercritical state compared to other substances like water, and CO2 is very safe for various applications. For this reason, supercritical CO2 power generation(sCO2) R&D activities are regarded as a core technology that can change future energy all over the world. As a part of 'Creative Economy Industrial Engine Projects', the Korean government has launched the Bureau of supercritical CO2 power generation system in April 2014 to lead the related technologies of the sCO2 system. Dr. Choongsub Yeom as a director of the Bureau is one of the top energy specialists in the domestic plant engineering. He has led many research projects on the plant engineering based on the nuclear power system at IAE (Institute for Advanced Engineering). Dr. Yeom said "The existing steam turbine system raises temperature and pressure of water, and then makes high pressure steam to run the steam turbine. However the high pressure and temperature processes make it difficult to find qualified materials, and can incur high O&M cost problems. The sCO2 system, on the other hand, has the advantages of both the liquid phase for turning the turbine strongly and the gas phase for lower friction resulting in the increase of the system efficiency more than 30%. Additionally its simple process layout helps to keep high efficiency with the reduction of the system size down to 75%." Another reason why the sCO2 system is highlighted is that the sCO2 system can be combined with many heat sources such as thermal, nuclear, geothermal, solar and fuel cell heat sources along with various waste heat applications. Also, the plant site area for the sCO2 system only requires around 1/5 to 1/10 of the conventional power plant site area. Dr. Yeom also said "Considering the fact that Korea has small available land, the sCO2 system with a small footprint can be an ideal alternative. Especially, the sCO2 system can be linked with the micro-grid system, which is strongly supported by Korean government, resulting in synergy effects in developing an original technology." Korea has imported over 95 % of energy for its domestic energy demand since 1998, thus the development of the sCO2 system would be a firm foundation to lead the future global energy market.

Securing original technology that can lead global energy market

The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) has included the technology of the sCO2 system as Cross-Cutting Technologies in the 2014/2015, and has invested $57M on the basic research of the sCO2 system. Japan and China are also pushing forward the development of the sCO2 system. Dr. Yeom said "The US already has prepared the demonstration plant of the sCO2 system with tens of MW capacity, while Korea has followed the US in the second group with a little technical gap. If we can promptly respond, we can develop original technologies resulting in the future market leader". Korea has built a 300kWe lab scale sCO2 system in KAERI by investing $2M and studied basic technologies for next generation nuclear power system (sodium-cooled fast reactor). Dr. Yeom said "Technologies for the sCO2 system are still at a test stage. Thus it is very urgent to secure a TRACK RECORD with fast technology development, to do tens of MW scale demo test and to prepare reliable design, construction, and O&M technologies." He also advised that considering the advanced nations in energy technology dominate the global power plant market up to 70%, the development of the sCO2 system could be a nice chance to raise the national competitiveness. The Bureau of sCO2 system was chosen for 'Preliminary Feasibility Assessment Project' in last 2014 and is being assessed for budget feasibilityt. Director Yeom says "It is our current goal to pass the assessment to secure budget for 2016. We are also preparing measures to continue R&D activities of the sCO2 system in case of hold up of the budget." Dr. Yeom also added that the Bureau would actively work together in cooperation with related companies and organizations to improve regulations and to develop new technologies resulting in a nice industrial eco-system for the sCO2 system. Power Korea supports Dr. Yeom and his team.
