Korea and Portugal strengthen exchanges in economy and culture
“I will continue active exchanges between the two countries”

Portugal and Korea established diplomatic relations in April 1961. And the Portuguese Embassy in Seoul was opened in June 1988. Nonetheless, relations between the two countries go back to the XVI and XVII centuries. Korea appeared in Portuguese cartography and a Portuguese merchant named João Mendes stepped on the Korean soil as the first European. But for many Koreans, the Nobel Prize writer José Saramago who wrote ‘A Jangada de Pedra (The Stone Raft)’ and ‘Ensaio sobre a Cegueira (Blindness)’ and an explorer Vasco da Gama are particularly famous in additions to the capital city Lisbon as one of sought after tourist destinations. Power Korea met António Quinteiro Nobre, Ambassador of Portugal, and heard about the future relations between the two countries.

AICEP to enhance bilateral relations

Since establishing diplomatic ties in 1961, Korea and Portugal have been steadily increasing the exchanges in diplomacy, economy and culture. The recent diplomatic events include President Park’s visit to Portugal in April 2011, at the time as Special Representative of the former President Lee Myung-bak, in the context of the 50th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between the two countries. Portuguese President Aníbal Cavaco Silva paid the first ever Presidential official visit to Seoul in July 2014. And a return visit of President Park Geun-hye is now expected. H.E. Nobre said “We’re sure that there is a real growth potential for both sides. A proof of that is the recent decision of (re)opening the Portuguese Trade and Investment Agency/AICEP’s branch in Seoul. It’s AICEP 58th representation abroad and I would like to enhance that the opening in Korea should be understood as a relevant sign of our interest in deepening the bilateral relations and of our understanding of Korea as a strategic trade and investment partner.” Chairman of AICEP, Mr. Miguel Frasquilho added that “Portuguese and Korean companies could develop a winning strategy in the global market and bring great economic gains to both countries by closely working together.”

506 Portuguese exporters to the Republic of Korea

Currently, there are about 506 Portuguese exporters to the Republic of Korea. The volume of export was increased to about 56% between 2010 and 2014. The main export products include plastics, rubber, machinery, minerals and ores, base metals and textiles which take up about 73% of total export. Footwear, furniture, food products and wines, as well as cellulose pulp and paper also show an interesting performance. H.E. Nobre said “It is notable that about 98% of the Portuguese companies are SMEs and many of the internationally highly successful business are also carried out by SMEs.” There are two Portuguese companies currently active in Korea since 2014: the EuroTech Solution Corporation and the EuroTech Tooling (Stamping die construction for Automotive Industries). Also, a typical Portuguese restaurant for Portuguese food lovers, called Taverna Portuguesa, in Mapo-gu, Seoul is run by a Portuguese man who married a Korean lady. Meanwhile, Samsung was the first Korean company setting up a business in Portugal in the 80s which soon was followed by LG, KIA, Daewoo as well as smaller companies. On the occasion of opening AICEP in Seoul, with the expectation of KOTRA opening a business center in Lisbon soon, Korea and Portugal are preparing to actively expand cooperation. H.E. Nobre said that Portugal actually has some projects with Korean companies under analysis at the moment.

Continuous cultural exchange in varieties

Portugal and Korea signed last year a Working Holiday Visa Agreement, which allows a better intercultural exchange of young people. They also have annual programs of activities in several areas like language teaching, music, dancing, theater and cinema. “FADO & FLAMENCO, Two Flames from Iberia”, for example, was organized in Jeonju by the Korean National Intangible Heritage Center in cooperation with the ‘Museu do Fado’ from the Portuguese side. Also, the retrospective of Dr. João Bénard da Costa was held in cooperation with Seoul Cinemateque, the theatre play “Ode Marítima” was presented at Yoo Theater and the Portuguese Company Olga Roriz participated in the Seoul International Dance Festival and gave a performance at the Seoul Arts Center. Meanwhile, Portugal is a traditional tourism incoming destination, with Lisbon and Oporto particularly popular, and is attracting an increasing number of tourists from all over the world. But for Koreans, Fátima is highly sought after as it is a leading global destination for religious tourism. 100,000 Koreans already have visited the sanctuary. H.E. Nobre said “The first Tourist Guide about Portugal has been published in Korean Language by Korean editorial group ‘Dream Map’ in collaboration with the Portuguese Embassy, AICEP and the Portuguese Tourism Institute. I hope the book enchants many Koreans to visit Portugal.” H.E. Nobre added: “I am here for three and a half years now, since May 2012, with part of my Family, my Wife and two of our four Children. We do enjoy a lot being here. I think that the secret of a happy diplomatic life is to actively engage with Korean people and the culture and to learn and exchange the differences.” H.E Nobre closed the interview by saying that he would give his unsparing effort in promoting active exchanges in many areas between the two countries.
