문화의 도시 대전에서 대한민국 청소년 영화예술의 진흥을 꿈꾸다

청소년기의 경험은 이후의 삶에 큰 영향을 끼친다. 어떤 사람들을 만나고, 그들로부터 어떤 영향을 받았느냐에 따라, 어떠한 교육과 체험의 과정을 겪었는지에 따라 청소년들은 자신이 나아가야할 방향과 미래의 목표를 설정하게 된다. 

제2의 스필버그 탄생을 기다리며
지난 11월 24일, 세계적인 영화감독 스티븐 스필버그가 미국 민간인에 주는 최고위급 영예인 ‘대통령 자유훈장’을 수상했다. 영화를 통해 사람들에게 꿈과 영감을 제시하며, 상상력의 세계를 크게 넓힌 점이 높게 평가받은 것이다. 바야흐로 ‘영상매체의 시대’를 살아가는 우리에게 있어 그만큼 영화가 차지하는 영향력은 거대하다.

스필버그의 수상이 있기 이틀 전인 11월 22일. 우리나라에서도 의미 있는 시상식이 개최됐다. 올해로 15회째를 맞이한 ‘대한민국청소년영화제’가 바로 그것이다. 사단법인 한국청소년영상예술진흥원이 주최하고 문화체육관광부와 교육부, 영화진흥위원회, 대전광역시, 한남대학교가 후원한 이번 시상식에는 173편의 영화가 본선에 진출해 치열한 경합을 벌였으며, 영화제 홈페이지와 유투브에서도 공개되어 네티즌들의 큰 호응을 받았다. 전문가 심사와 일반인 및 청소년 심사를 거친 결과, 종합대상에는 동의대학교 박성인 감독의 ‘은희’가 올랐으며, 중고등부 ‘공포미술관’, 대학부 ‘도어락’, 초등부 ‘어쩌라Go100’, 청·장년부 ‘숨바꼭질’이 각각 부문별 대상을 차지했다. 진흥원의 성낙원 원장은 “특히 이번 영화제 출품작들은 젊은이들의 꿈과 열정, 방황과 좌절을 진솔하게 드러낸 작품들이 많았고, 청소년들의 소통방식과 다양한 문화에 대한 접근 방법, 우리 문화에 대한 높은 관심과 미래를 내다보는 친환경적 메시지 등 의식 있는 주제와 성찰이 돋보이는 작품이 많았습니다”고 평하며, 앞으로도 이와 같은 영화제를 통해 어른들과 청소년들이 소통하는 기회를 가졌으면 한다는 바람을 밝혔다.

창의력 가득한 청소년 영화예술, 세계를 바라보다
대한민국의 올바른 문화예술 활동을 선도하고자 설립된 한국청소년영상예술진흥원은 앞서 설명한 대한민국청소년영화제 외에도 청소년예술제와 청소년 IPTV 방송국, 영화 영재교육 및 평생교육원 운영 등의 사업을 펼치며 우리 청소년들이 스스로의 꿈과 끼를 발견하고 진정한 방송인으로 성장해나갈 수 있도록 발판을 마련하는데 주력하고 있다.
진흥원이 이처럼 왕성한 활동을 오랜 시간 끊임없이 이어올 수 있었던 데에는 지난 15년 간 한결같은 신념으로 청소년 영상예술 분야의 발전에 헌신해 온 성낙원 원장의 열정이 있었기 때문이다. 성 원장은 “청소년 영상예술의 진흥을 위해 최선의 노력을 다하고 있습니다. 전 세계 문화예술 시장이 점차 확대되고 있는 지금, 대한민국 문화예술이 세계로 나아가기 위해선 덕과 재능을 겸비한 예술인 양성과 창의적인 나만의 콘텐츠개발이 우선되어야 한다고 생각합니다”라고 밝혔다. 
대전지역의 대표적인 프로덕션인 낙원프로덕션을 창업한 장본인이자 현재 중국예술가협회 상무이사로도 활동하고 있는 그는 중국예술가협회와의 지속적인 동반자 관계를 바탕으로 해외청소년에까지 그 활동영역을 넓혀나갈 방침이다. 또한 청소년과 그 가족의 문화예술 소양을 제고하기 위한 ‘꿈다락토요문화학교’를 운영하며 즐겁게 영화를 접할 수 있는 영상 아카데미인 ‘영화와 놀기’ 프로그램을 지난 12월 5일까지 시행하는 등 학습활동에 치중된 교육이 아닌 생각의 폭을 넓히고 창조적인 표현 능력과 세상을 바라보는 다양한 사고 및 관점을 가질 수 있도록 돕는 교육 활동도 꾸준히 진행해나갈 계획이다. 성 원장은 마지막으로 “청소년을 대상으로 하다 보니 재정적인 부분에서 많은 어려움이 있습니다. 문화예술 진흥의 뿌리가 될 청소년 교육의 굳건한 토대를 마련하기 위해서라도 정부와 지자체의 적극적인 관심과 지원이 이뤄졌으면 합니다”라고 당부의 말을 전했다. 세계로 나아갈 우리 영화의 기반을 만들기 위해 노력하고 있는 한국청소년영상예술진흥원과 성낙원 원장. 이들이 만들어나갈 상상력의 세계에 전 세계의 영화팬들이 흠뻑 매료될 그날을 기다려본다.

Waiting for the second Steven Spielberg
Recently, Steven Spielberg received Presidential Medal of Freedom on 24 November. It is the most honorable prize awarded to civilians in the US. And this indicates the importance of movies in this visual media era. Two days before the award on 22, The 15th Korea Youth Film Festival was held in Korea. It was hosted by Korea Youth Contents Art Agency and sponsored by Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism, Ministry of Education, Korea Film Council, Daejeon Metropolitan City and Hannam University. 173 films made to the finals and the competition was broadcast on the host website and YouTube. The films went through screening by judges and the public including young people. ‘Eunhee’ by director Sungin Park from Dongeui University won Total Grand Prize, ‘Horror Gallery’ in the middle school category, ‘Doorlock’ in the university category and ‘Euzzera Go 100’ in the elementary category and ‘Hide and Seek’ in the young people category won the grand prize respectively.

Director Sung says “Many films this year featured the story on dream, passion and wandering and despair of young people. Also notable is that number of films has delivered insightful messages relating to younger one’s means of communication, approach to culture and environmental issues.” Sung added that more and more younger ones and adults could openmindedly communicate each other through the festival. 

Creative cinematography for youth to go global
Apart from the festival, Korea Youth Contents Art Agency also runs ‘Youth Art Festival’, ‘Youth IPTV Broadcasting’, ‘Film Education’ and ‘Life Long Learning Center’ in the hope of providing a foundation for youth to spread their dream to the world. Director Sung in particular has devoted his life in promoting youth culture for the last 15 years. Sung says “As promoting cultural contents has become a global trend, we are actively supporting young people who will spread the excellence of Korean culture and art with creative cultural contents to the world.” Meanwhile, Sung is the one who founded Nakwon Production in Daejeon and is serving as Executive Director of Chinese Artist Association. For this reason, he is planning to expand his support to overseas young people. Sung also runs ‘Kumdarak Toyo Culture School’ for youth and their families and held ‘Plying with Films’ for youth to have knowledge on films until 5 December. Sung says “Because our projects are related with young people we often have financial difficulties. Therefore, I would like to ask the central and local governments an active support for us.” Power Korea hopes Sung and Korea Youth Contents Art Agency will contribute to fostering talented global young film directors.
