포기하지 않는 열정으로 꿀벌 산업의 현대화·과학화를 이끌다

올해 초부터 불어 닥친 전국적인 ‘허니’열풍은 수많은 사람들의 꿀의 매력에 흠뻑 빠지도록 만들었다. 이전까지 다소 한정적인 용도로만 사용되어 왔던 ‘꿀’이 이제 산업의 전면에 자리 잡게 된 것이다. 양봉산업과 꿀벌의 가치가 재조명되고 있다.

꿀벌 질병 증가 추세, 적절한 대처 이뤄져야
벌꿀과 밀랍, 로얄젤리 등 다양한 부산물을 얻기 위해 꿀벌을 키우는 ‘양봉산업’은 우리나라뿐만 아니라 대부분의 국가에서 경영되는 알짜배기 산업이다. 국내의 경우 2005년 이후 전체 양봉농가수는 다소 감소했으나, 농가당 소유 봉군수와 시장의 벌꿀 매수량은 꾸준히 증가하며 집적화·산업화되는 흐름을 보이고 있다. 특히 최근에는 ‘웰빙’에 대한 관심이 커지고, ‘허니’ 열풍까지 불면서 우리나라 벌꿀에 대한 인기가 날로 높아지고 있다. 

그러나 이러한 핑크빛 전망과는 달리 일반 양봉농가의 사정은 무척이나 어려운 상황이다. 기후변화와 생태계변화 등의 다양한 원인에 의해 꿀벌 질병이 증가하며, 생산성에 심각한 악영향을 끼치고 있기 때문이다. 이러한 양봉농가의 어려움을 해결하고자 국내 최초로 꿀벌 질병 진단, 치료 및 상담을 전문으로 개설된 곳이 바로 대전광역시에 위치한 꿀벌동물병원이다. 

지난 2013년 ‘동물의약품의 수의사 처방제’ 정책 도입과 발맞춰 개설된 꿀벌동물병원은 꿀벌 질병에 취약한 양봉농가에 도움을 주기 위해 전국 각지, 거리와 시간 구매 없이 직접 방문하여 질병 관찰 및 조사, 실험실 진단, 처방과 상담을 모두 처리하고 있다. 꿀벌동물병원의 정년기 원장은 “최근 조사된 바에 따르면 토종벌의 개체 수는 수년간 95% 가량 줄어들고 있고, 반면에 꿀벌 질병 발생 건수는 지난해보다 4배 이상 크게 증가한 것으로 밝혀졌습니다. 특히 가장 많은 사례를 보이는 낭충봉아부패병의 경우 즉시적인 소각과 소독이 필요하다는 점에서 주의가 필요합니다”라고 설명했다.

대한민국 양봉산업 발전 위한 한 길
그간 꿀벌 산업은 몇몇 기업을 제외하면 일반 양봉농가 수준에서 주먹구구식으로 이뤄져온 것이 사실이다. 정년기 원장과 이명환 수의사(전 대전보건대학교 교수/꿀벌생명협동조합 이사장), 하창수 수의사(전 한국안정성평가연구소 책임연구원)은 이를 해결하고자 함께 힘을 모아 ‘꿀벌생명사회적협동조합’을 추진했으며, 이 과정에서 인가의 어려움을 경험해 선제적 방안으로 꿀벌동물병원을 개설하게 되었다. 이어 ‘꿀벌생명협동조합’을 설립했고, 2013년 대전보건대학교 평생교육원과 2014년 대전시민대학에 양봉 과정을 개설해 활동을 이어오고 있다. 현재는 ‘꿀벌전문교육원’ 설립을 준비 중이며, 기존에 발생한 꿀벌 질병을 규명, 치료와 예방, 관리에 대한 지도·상담과 꿀벌 질병학 등의 관련 서적 출판활동도 벌이고 있다.

정년기 원장은 “인류가 재배하는 1500종의 작물 중 30%는 꿀벌의 수분에 의존하며, 세계 식량의 90%를 차지하는 100대 농작물로 범위를 좁히면 무려 71%의 작물이 꿀벌에 의해 열매를 맺습니다. 단순한 양봉 부산물의 수준을 넘어 꿀벌은 사회적·경제적으로 커다란 의미를 가집니다”라고 강조했다. 이에 덧붙여 그는 “처음 병원을 시작할 때에는 높은 진입장벽과 제도적 문제점으로 어려움이 많았던 것이 사실입니다. 하지만 내가 지금 걷는 힘든 길이 뒷사람들에게는 좋은 모범이자 방향이 될 것이라는 믿음으로 질병 연구와 예방 및 치료 활동에 최선을 다하고 있습니다”라고 밝혔다. 

현재 정 원장은 한국양봉농업협동조합과의 지속적인 협업을 통해 보다 많은 양봉 농가의 어려움을 해결해주기 위한 기반 구축에 매진하고 있다. 아직은 부족한 실험·시험실 구축과 함께 이동 진료 차량을 확보해 현장으로서의 접근성을 높여 보다 실질적인 도움을 주고자 하는 것이다. 마지막으로 그는 보다 많은 수의과대학에서 꿀벌 질병학에 대한 비중 있는 교육과 올바른 양봉 용어 사용으로 양봉산업 선진화와 세계화를 이끌 기반을 구축하는 과정이 필요하다고 역설했다. 대한민국 양봉산업의 발전을 위한 이들의 한결같은 마음이 보다 나은 결실로 다가오게 되기를 바란다.

Coping with increasing number of honeybee related diseases 
Bee farming is commonly practiced in many countries as we can make honey, beewax and royal gelly out of it. Korea experienced a decrease in number of the bee farmers in 2005 but the number of scale and market has been steadily increasing. The recent wellbeing trend especially is positively affecting the industry and people started to show an interest in native honeybees. Despite all of these good signs, however, the reality of the farmers are in dire situation due to climate and ecological changes which caused honeybee related diseases and poor productivity. To improve the situation, Director Yeonki Jeong established Honeybee Animal Hospital in Daejeon City. In accordance with ‘Veterinary Prescription System for Animal Medicines’ introduced in 2013 by the government, Jeong pays an itinerant visit to each farmer who suffers from the diseases in order to carry out observation, research, experiment, treatment and consultation. Director Jeong says “A recent report says that the number of native bees has been reduced by 95% but the diseases increased by 4 times from last year. Sacbrood, for example, must be burned to be removed and its sanitization is urgent.”

Contributing to development of Korean bee farming
Bee farming in Korea has been practiced rather unsystematically so far except a few major farmers. Director Jeong, vet Meyonghwan Lee (former Prof. at Daejeon Health Institute of Technology/chief director of Honeybee Life Cooperative) and vet Changsoo Ha (former chief director of Korea Safety Assessment Research Institute) together established Honeybee Animal Hospital in preparation to eventually establish ‘Honeybee Life Social Cooperative (tentative)’. Instead, they opened Honeybee Life Cooperative, a Life Long Learning Center at Daejeon Health Institute of Technology in 2013 and a bee farming course at Daejeon Citizen’s University in 2014. Currently, they are preparing to open ‘Hoenybee Training Center (tentative)’ and are carrying out various activities to eradicate honeybee related diseases. Director Jeong says “30% of 1,500 kinds of crops depend on the water of honeybee. If I narrow it down to 100 main crops we cultivate globally, 71% of them depend on honeybee water.” Jeong added “We had many turns and twist at the initial stage of the business. But our passion and knowledge have been always on our side and we will keep doing our best to promote the industry” There are still many things to improve in terms of experience and facilities but Jeong and his team are exerting their utmost effort in providing excellent services including itinerant service.
