40 years in making Buddhist sculptures
Passion, love and technique are the keys to create master pagodas and Buddha from rough stone

From a 16 year old boy to be a master stonemason
Passion and love in chiseling pagodas and Buddha

Born in Buyeo, South Chungcheong Province, CEO Kang became serious on what to do with his life when he was in middle school and he decided to devote his life to making sculptures with stones. He was 16. However, Kang’s decision was not that surprising considering the fact that many people engaged in stonemasonry in the region at that time. Kang moved to Daejeon and studied hard for 3 years and helped exporting stone sculptures to Japan in Guri City and assisted his teacher Chansoo Park for 6 years. After discharged from military service, he opened ‘Hyonegu Stone’ at the age of 23 and the business was prosperous. He explains the reason he changed the name to the current Ssangyong Stone “I met a monk on the way home after erecting a Buddha statue in Bongwonsa Temple who said ”the business will even more flourish if you change the name to Ssangyong Stone.” Indeed, the business became booming and Kang had to work without a moment’s rest. Kang’s close relation with Buddhist sculptures comes from his faith in Buddha’s teachings.

Conducting sculpting with utmost attention to detail
Meticulous works on plan

Kang manages every process of the work from plan, sculpting to installation. He uses the rough stones produced in Iksan, Jeolla Province; the stones which most stonemasons avoid to use due to expensive processing cost. Kang says “Despite its high cost and physical effort of using rough stones, I only use them because cut stones cannot compare with them in terms of maintenance and improvement.” Kang is also praised from monks as he kindly explains the work to them from very beginning to the end of the work. The reason Kang always makes a plan is that he have seen many stonemasons who lost their way in the middle of chiseling as they did not make a plan. Kang’s works include pagodas and Buddha in Bongwonsa Temple, Yongamsa Temple, Yongduksa Temple in Yongin City, Jangwangsa Temple in Chungju City, Boducksa Temple in Seoul and Chungryeongsa Temple in Cheongsong County.

Obtaining Craftsman Stone Handicraft and Korean Stonemason
“I can carry on thanks to those who always give a support to me”

Kang has Craftsman Stone Handicraft and Korean Stonemason (certifications). He works in cooperation with his younger brother factory manager and staff. Kang especially pays a great attention when the completed sculptor is loaded onto a crane to be delivered to its destination. Kang says “Students today use 3D programms to design and they also have an ability to pick things up quickly. However, it takes them 2 to 3 years to learn how to chisel with their hands and they are rather discouraged at this stage. One pagoda or Buddha usually takes 2 months to complete.” What makes Kang keep carrying out this hard work then is because he loves what he does and he feels worth when people love his works. He says “I cannot sleep even from several days before when I think of my completed work to be moved to its destination soon. And I feel really sad when I have to say good bye to my work. But that’s the part I have to endure as I love this job dearly and I also have people who shows gratitudes whenever I finish the work.”

Quality Korean stones
40 years of single path

Kang says “Recently, more and more stonemasons and monks prefer relatively cheap Chinese stones. It is understandable in a way when considering the fact that a 7 meter Korean stone pagoda cost you around $70,000 while Chinese one’s about $50,000. But you must know that there clearly is difference in terms of quality and its maintenance there after. That’s why senior monks still prefer Korean stones.” Kang has walked a single path as a stonemason for 41 years. Despite the hardships it involve and off-season in winter, Kim’s happiness and satisfaction in his work are much bigger than that and this is his driving force. Power Korea wishes Kang a prosperous 2016.
